Vehicle Detail
This first owner purchased this E-type at Baker Motors in Atlanta, Georgia. The second owner acquired the car March 15th, 1975. He then owned it until the third owner purchased it March 28th, 1977. That owner kept the car until the current owner who purchased her June 20th, 1989 (23 years ago). This car has been a resident of Metro-Atlanta, Georgia its entire life, save a brief stint in Florida (1988-1989), when its then owner took it there when he retired. It was then sold to its current owner and brought back to Atlanta. The car comes with a clear Georgia title and current registration as well as an impressive folder containing records and receipts dating back as far as 1975, when it was only just years old. The car also comes with three thick packets of pictures documenting her thorough restoration. These pictures have been scanned and made available to you at a link posted later in this text. This car has it's original engine (rebuilt) and gearbox. It is obvious from the pictures that this exceptional car was still in very good condition when the restoration began. No rust repairs were needed, it retains its excellent original wiring harness, and has the feel of a car that hasn’t been over-restored and retains much of its original character. This due largely to the use of many of the original, low mileage parts (Gauges, dash, etc.). Also, since the car was restored in the late 70’s to mid-eighties, no Chinese reproduction parts were used. Most of the receipts for parts are from a supplier in England. The only modification ever made to this car is the use of the triple carburetor set up as found on the Series One cars along with the addition of a cylinder head from a Series III XJ6 (this is a common upgrade to improve breathing as that head has the largest valves of any of the XK engines). The original cylinder head, carburetors and inlet manifold are included with the car (see picture on photobucket link). The mileage on the title reads 49010, which was a typo made 25 years ago (the current owner did not notice it at the time). The odometer was, unfortunately, reset to Zero at the end of the restoration back in 1987. The last known mileage for the car is 22,165 on February 19, 1977 as indicated by a file receipt for a Georgia State Inspection. Receipts for the car’s restoration begin on October 10, 1977, shortly after the second owner purchased it, so the car is not likely to have more than 30,000 miles total, counting the miles since restoration, which are recorded on the odometer at 4,536.I have seen many cars for sale on Ebay that have the most basic of descriptions and very few pictures. I often wonder why on Earth would someone purchase a car so ill described. I, however, wish to present a VERY thorough, straightforward delineation of this truly wonderful sports car. So, go get a cup of coffee, beer, cocktail or glass of sweet tea because this is going to take a while. Reminder: There are links to LOTS of pictures of this car further down this page. Speedwell is a small British car restoration shop on the edge of the Oconee National Forest in Northeast Georgia, USA. We specialize in the restoration and road-readiness of vintage British sports cars for the purpose of show and/or rally. Occasionally a customer will have a change in circumstances, or a shift in priorities, and ask us to help them sell his/her car. This 1969 E-type Roadster is one such example. This car was brought to Speedwell recently after being asleep for 20 years in the owner’s garage. Our job was to revive her, make her road-ready and take her to market. The owner has had a change in his circumstances and has concluded the time has come to pass the mantle to someone who will drive and enjoy this car. We performed an inspection along with all the normal things one would do when reviving a car that has been dormant for a lengthy period of time. This included the following: 1) Remove fuel tank, have boiled out and sealed, remove and clean fuel pump, replace fuel tank pick up screen, replace fuel filter and replace plastic fuel lines in trunk. 2) Remove carburetors and perform complete rebuild with all new parts including jets and floats. While doing the carburetors, we observed the cylinder head had developed a leak. 3) Remove cylinder head, check for cracks, deck for flatness, perform valve job, install hardened exhaust valve seats, check block deck for flatness and reinstall with new gaskets. 4) While cylinder head was off, we sent the exhaust manifolds to Jet-Hot for ceramic coating and reconditioned the inlet manifold. 5) Changed oil and filter using Valvoline VR1 20W50. 6) Drain gearbox and differential, refill with fresh gear oil. 7) Sent distributor to Jeff Schlemmer at Advanced Distributors to be rebuilt and re-curved to accommodate the triple carburetor set up. 8) Flush and refill coolant, change heater hoses, radiator bleed line and refill with 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water. 9) Thoroughly flush brake system and clutch hydraulics with Castrol LMA brake fluid. 10)Replace all four ball-joint gaiter boots. Lube all grease fittings for front and rear suspension along with fittings for front and rear wheel bearings. 11) Replace air filter and canister grommet. 12) Replace battery. 13) Get running, check charging system, check gauges, check lighting, etc. After warming her up, stop engine and check compression. Result: 150lbs across the board on all six. 14) Replace tires with new “H” rated Vredstein 185HR15 Sprint Classics (Pity the 28 year old Avons only had 4,500 miles on them), including new tubes and bands. 15) Mend a few lighting issues (loose connections), a couple gauge issues and finish making car road-ready. This Jaguar starts immediately with a turn of the key and settles quite nicely into a cadenced idle. Oil pressure is just shy of 40psi at idle, warm. The clutch engages exactly as it should. The car accelerates easily and purposefully. The original 4-speed gearbox is very smooth with all gears engaging easily without even the slightest whine or complaint. At speed the car is evenly balanced and without flaw. There are no rattles, no squeaks, no strange noises, just silken power and instantaneous response. The steering is tight, the suspension is compliant and very tractable. The wire wheels and new Vredstein tires provide smooth handling and a vibration free ride. The brakes work perfectly, from proper pedal height with a firm feel to the way she comes to a halt as straight as an arrow, even when hauled down from speeds well above the Government’s limits. The best thing is that after a test drive, no oil spots appear under the car, at all. I keep checking the oil to make sure there is any in the engine and it’s full, very nice. The interior is VERY nice. The black leather is supple and has a nice hand and the seats feel as though they were rebuilt yesterday. The dash and interior door panels are really nice. The steering wheel is beautiful. The pictures don’t do the comfortable feel of this car justice. The paint is over 25 years old, but shines very well and is quite glossy. It has a few blemishes and imperfections due to its age, but is very presentable and looks great. Some of the blemishes are in the pictures while the others were so minor they wouldn’t show up for the camera. I have driven this car nearly 50 miles and she seems very happy to be once again amongst the living. I believe the lucky new owner will have a wonderful time with it. I only hope the winning bidder drives her regularly and uses her in Rallies and driving events, because she really begs to be driven. The winning bidder would only need to plan on simply arriving and driving her home, no need for a trailer. I am sure I haven’t covered everything so if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email. If you would like a call, just send your phone number. I will be glad to speak with you. We encourage any serious buyers within reach to arrange an appointment to come see and drive this car in person. Please excuse the poor interior pictures. Weather put a damper on my picture taking process. I will be posting some much better ones tomorrow when the sun comes out. We will be glad to make ourselves available for flexible pick-up hours and will help in any way to make sure your experience is pleasant. Overseas Shipping: Speedwell has shipped many cars both ways across the Atlantic. We will work with your shipping agent by expeditiously providing all necessary paperwork to ensure a smooth shipping process. We can provide transportation via insured trailer at an additional cost to the seaports of Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia, Brunswick, Georgia or Jacksonville, Florida. Email me for rates. If you do not have a shipping agent, I can confidently recommend Terry Pittaway with Phoenix Cargo. He has handled several cars for me and done an exemplary job. His email address is terry.pittaway@phoenix-cargo.com. We recommend shipping via container as it does a much better job of protecting your car from the sea air. The other option is RORO (Roll on, roll off), which costs less, but is not quite as secure as container shipping. Lastly, please, no emails or phone calls asking me to end the auction early. Out of respect for the Ebay community I always let the auction run its course. Please check my feedback rating. I have been with the Ebay community for many years and take my reputation here quite seriously.
