Vehicle Detail
1964 Lotus 23B Buick 215 V8 California Racing Partnership "special" Amazing 1964 Lotus 23B for sale from San Francisco Sports Cars. This is a once in a "Blue Moon" opportunity to own an amazing and very special one off, factory built Lotus 23 Can Am car. This very interesting racer is your entry into any event worldwide that you can imagine, having just finished a complete and comprehensive restoration, she is ready for anything. Originally ordered by California Racing Partners based in Berkeley, California the car had many famous icons of the time put time and effort into making her a top performer. Bill Webb and Irv Orth along with Roy Pike (Lotus factory F2 driver at the time) along with Motor Racing Development (Brabham) designed and implemented frame modifications to support the additional torque and horsepower from the V8 powerplant. The frame was built by Arch Motors in the UK using heavier and larger diameter tubes than the 4 cylinder 23. The body was built by Specialized Mouldings with 23C style fenders. 23B-5-103 was first shipped to San Francisco via airfreight on a pallet complete except wheels and engine. A Hewland HD5 transmission was mated to a Buick 215 V8, American Racing magnesium rims were then fitted, 7" in front and 10" in rear. Bill Webb designed a modified rear hub carrier from a 23 hub carrier casting but with stronger axle, bearings and half shafts. First outing was August 21, 1965 at Oregon International Speedway with Bill Webb at the helm, this fist attempt was not her greatest as Webb went off road and crashed into a rock, damaging the underside and breaking his tail bone at the same time. Car was repaired by Webb and Orth but next raced by Jon Woodner. Woodner worked the bugs out of the car further developing the powerplant and adding Weber manifold and carbs. Car was serviced at this time by Griswald's in Berkeley, CA and had limited use on track by Woodner before retiring the V8. This Lotus 23B was sold in 1969 to Bill Williams and Gus Chofre without engine and they proceeded to modify and install a BMW 2.0 Ltr engine mated to the original Hewland HD-5. Both Williams and Chofre raced the car. In Williams/Chofre care she ran... Laguna Seca Regional Enduro 11/4/72 Sears Point Regional 4/8/73 Laguna Seca 5/4/73 Laguna Seca Regional 5/20/73 (Car rolled in turn 9 damaging body, front steering and radiator) Williams/Chofre then sold her to Craig Brown who campaigned the car till he sold her in 1976 to Jarome Bassler. Bassler sold to Donald McGreevy in 1981 and this is where she stayed till her current owner restored her to prior, original condition. SCCA logbook 33-395 shows the races entered and competed in above and will come with the vehicle. We have extensive history and photos of the car from her past as well as articles about the vehicle from Northwest Region SCCA as well as Motorsport International a magazine of the day.
