Vehicle Detail

Hello! The car I'm selling is a 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 Veloce. Several years ago, this car was converted from gasoline to electric. This is not a hybrid and runs using only an electric motor which is powered by over a hundred small rechargeable batteries. While you do manually shift gears, as it is electric, there is no clutch involved. For recharging you simply plug into a regular electric outlet the car and let it charge overnight. A heavy duty extension cord is included in this sale. Here are the electric components used in this Alfa Romeo: Motor: Advanced DC X91-4001 Series Wound DC series motor, 6.7" diamter, 10 HP continuous, 40 HP peak, 72-144 VDC, reversible; Controller: Curtis PMC #1231C-8601 96-144 VDC, 500 A max; Batteries: Installed are 118 Marathon BB600, 1.20 Volt, Nickel-Cadmium, Flooded Marathon Norco brand; Charger: Manzanita Micro PFC20; DC/DC Converter: Zivan NG1. This is very definitely a project car for someone. I would discourage anyone from buying it unless they understand that there is work needed on this car. I think, given a person who has the time and know how, the car has a lot of potential. I bought this Alfa Romeo several months ago and as much as I hate to admit it, quickly discovered that I wasn't going to be able to fix it up the way I had hoped to . If you're still interested, please read on. Condition of the car: Body: there are a few rust spots under the car. Both the front and rear bumpers are missing, but it does have both the bumper assemblies. Paint: The paint on the hood still looks good, but the rest of the paint is in poor condition. Interior: The front seats are in fairly good condition, no rips or tears. The carpet is just in fair condition and is pulling up some on the floor. The dash needs a lot of work as the toggle switches for the lights, windshield wiper control, and emergency flasher switch are all hanging loose. These are all located in the openings where the original gauges were located. There is no A/C, heater, or radio in the car. Tires: all look to be in good condition. Convertible top: this isn't faded and there are no holes in the cover. There are a couple of places where the cover is beginning to pull away. Driveability: When I first got the car, I had to have some rewiring work done to get the low and high beams working. A new 12 volt battery was put in at the same time. Other repair work included re-welding the accelerator pedal which had already been welded a few times. After having this work completed, I found that while the car still run, it's top speed is only about 40 mph. (The person who had the car before me had it up to 65 mph.) From what I've been told, there are two possible sources for this lack of power. One is that when the accelerator pedal was re-welded, it was not done at the correct angle to allow for full acceleration. The other possible problem is that one or more of the batteries are not good. For someone who knows what they are doing, this Alfa Romeo could be put into good working condition. Apparently it did run very well for a number of years as a converted electric vehicle. I've also been told that the components used in this car to convert it to electric are very high quality so another option for the person who buys it would be to use these components in another car. I do have a notebook to include in the sale of this Alfa Romeo which contains information about wiring and the various components used in converting the car to electric. Included with the car will be a little over one hundred extra Marathon Norco BB600 Nickel-Cadium batteries. These could be installed to extend how far the car could be driven when fully charged. If you would like any additional information, feel free to contact me. If you have technical questions, I am still in contact with the person I brought car from and he is very knowledgeable about electric vehicles. My e-mail address is: jugglertx@grandecom.net. I am located in Waco, Texas and if you would like to see this Alfa Romeo in person, that can certainly be arranged. The person buying the car will need to make their own transport arrangements. If the buyer would be using an auto shipper, I'd be happy to provide information, based on my own experience, as to which companies I would and wouldn't recommend. Thanks Joel W.
