Vehicle Detail
Auction is for a 1963 Studebaker Avanti. Car is equipped with the Studebaker V8, R1 engine. options include automatic transmission, power steering, power disc brakes, power windows, air conditioning and tinted glass. This Avanti was originally sold to a dealer in Visalia, California on March 29, 1963. The car then made its way to Sumter, South Carolina, sometime in the late 1970's, probably as a result of a military transfer since Sumter has a large military base. I tried to buy this car about 1982 but could not make a deal. I ended up purchasing it from another man in 2008. It's always been garaged. Speedometer shows 56,418, don't know if this is correct but it's possible. Since I bought the car I've stripped the front end suspension down to the bare frame. Installed new upper and lower control arm bushings, installed new springs and shocks. Installed new king pins. I decided to make this car a reliable driver so I've replaced the original carburetor with a new Edlebrock, l installed an electric fuel pump and installed electronic ignition. Car starts easily and has been trouble free. Last summer I had the air conditioning working and it cooled great. It leaked down over the winter and I never recharged it. Since that car had been sitting for several years I also replaced the valve guide seals. One of the biggest challenges was getting the power windows to work. When I bought the car they came in a box. All new motors have been installed and windows work as they should. Also, if you look at the pictures you'll notice the mag wheels. These are off a Ford Ranger with 16 inch wheels. With these wheels and the new front suspension the car drives and handles great. I also replaced the carpet inside the car, new head liner, new door panels and new rear deck. Only item still needing replacement are the interior rear sail panels. I also had the drivers front seat redone. Other seats are original. The original dash has some cracks and this is probably the biggest negative on the car. The brakes were also all rebuilt about 2 years ago and new dual exhaust with glass packs were installed. Car sounds great. Car runs and drives great. we've done several trips in the car and never had a problem. The car is currently registered and we use it to go to the local cruise ins or just to take a ride. Windshield has a chip or star on it. All other glass is good. One other item I did was move the battery to the trunk and installed a battery disconnect. I got tired of paying the high price for the special long battery and put a new sealed battery in the trunk. Exterior has been painted several years ago and is still presentable. No apparent cracks in the fiberglass. Frame and hog troughs are perfect, no rust. Only negative item concerning the mechanical's of the car is that when it is driven frequently, at least twice a week, if doesn't leak hardly at all. When it's left for a month or so there's a small puddle of oil coming from rear seal. Doesn't;t appear to be using oil when it's running just when it sits for long periods of time. Car is located in Spartanburg, South Carolina and appointments can be arranged for a test drive or inspection. One last item, the car has a serial number plate attached to the frame that says R-3977. for some unknown reason the South Carolina DMV decided to use the body number for the title, RQ-2512. If this presents any problems please advise and we'll see what can be done to correct. I have a copy of the original build sheet which verifies these numbers. On Aug-10-12 at 05:56:09 PDT, seller added the following information:It was pointed out to me the serial number listed in the one area is incorrect based on the description provided. This is for 2 reasons. The first was I used a template from another Studebaker I had sold previously and second eBay would not accept the correct serial number, R-3977. Sorry for any confusion. The title matches as described in the write up.
