Cons: "Small cup holders." Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10 "This little car is so much fun to drive, I absolutely love it! If your asking if I would buy another then that would be a yes. It offers a lot of cool features considering its age, and is a ball to go topless. The top is super easy to put up or down, with a manual or automatic top. We have only had a few problems with it but what do you expect from a 1997, nothing lasts forever. I wish Volkswagen still made it because the Eos is a little pricey, but when you receive the quality that Volkswagen puts into there cars you understand. VW had a winner with the Cabrio." Fun, handles great, love the convertible, mpg . I got 40mpg on highways. Handled well in snow (in Minnesota). With the top down, I've hauled cabinets, bicycles and several dogs. Still on the same clutch! Just love this car." By cabriogal (CA) on Monday, November 21, 2011 I own this car - My approximate mileage is 120,000 Overall rating 10 of 10rating details : Pros: "Fun to drive, handles well, great gas mileage" Cons: "convertible top isnt sealed as tight anymore" Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10 "I have had this car for 10 years and I still love it! Its fun to drive, handles well, has been reliable, and you can park it anywhere! The convertible top has started to leak a little but this is a minor problem. I have not had issues with mold or anything, you can just hear air seeping in when youre on the highway. For a 14 year old car thats to be expected though. It has held up cosmetically and has only needed upkeep, no major repairs. Great gas mileage too. My next car will be another cabrio or maybe a golf." Excellent Vehicle! By Rebekah (MI) on Monday, November 07, 2011 I own this car - My approximate mileage is 86,000 Overall rating 10 of 10rating details : Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10 "I purchased my 1998 vw cabrio GLS over a year ago as my first car. It had 63K miles on it and I am the third owner. The good: heated seats(!), power-down windows, original top has NEVER leaked, great mpg (approx 32 mpg when I went to Wisconsin), small and practical (can fit in ANY parking spot), safe and extremely solid and smooth for such a small car, lots of room in the backseats compared to any other 2 dr car, very reliable. I feel a lot safer than a lot of other cars! Super fun in the summer! The bad: the cupholders are annoying...a pop can fits nice but no large drinks, I had the front wheel barings replaced shortly after I purchased it (couldn've been the person before me), the speedometer/tachometer recently quite working...I need a new instrument cluster which will cost $850. They said it rarely happens, but it happened...that one is the big kicker. I had the [automatic] transmission checked...doesn't shift well in cold weather. The mechanic said that it's a small summer car with a small amount of tranny fluid so I let it run in the winter for a few min. before I drive. It does fine in the summer, it just doesn't like the cold. It does fine if I let her run for 10 min. in the morning before work. The AC didn't work when I bought it. I had the frian recharged in the spring for $20 and the AC still works (pin hole leak?). We've never got stuck in the snow...it does super well for only being front wheel drive...never kept me from getting up the steap driveway. Other than the things above, everything else works PERFECT in this car. This car is expensive to fix, but the reliability is well worth it. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone! It has been a great vehicle for how much I drive around!" Fun, handles great, love the convertible, mpg . Quick, sporty, economical, and well-equipped with a wide range of standard features, the 1997 Volkswagen Cabio was a worthy addition to the German automaker's lineup. In its second year, the Cabrio was updated slightly, with daytime running lights, side molding that matched the exterior body color, and a dashboard-located central locking switch added as standard equipment. Power was provided by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 115-hp engine, which was linked to a five-speed manual overdrive transmission. A four-speed automatic overdrive transmission was available as an option. Among the Cabrio's best standard features was its manually operated six-layer cloth top, which had a glass rear window with a defogger -- a nice feature for winter or rainy-weather driving. A fixed roll bar served not only as a safety feature but also as a style cue. Dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, power windows, power door locks, heated mirrors, cruise control, an eight-speaker stereo system, and an anti-theft alarm system were also part of the package. Leather seats and air conditioning were available as options. Drivers were very enthusiastic about the VW Cabrio, citing its comfort, gas economy, and "fun" factor as positive points. A number of drivers noted how quickly and easily the top goes up or down, stowing neatly in the rear. Others have commented on the large trunk and convenience of the central locking system.
