Vehicle Detail
’49 Packard Deluxe 8 (2265-9) 2 Door Club Sedan This is quite a beautiful automobile, stunning in fact. It is painted in the original rare colors. I encourage you to read the entire auction if you are truly interested in purchasing this car. History This is a local Texas car. Prior to my purchase, it was in a collection of cars for 34 years and came to the previous owner through a dealer from the estate of the original owner. It had not been driven on the road since 1971 or ‘72. May of ‘71 was the last time a Texas safety inspection sticker was issued to the car. It is still partially intact on the windshield. This car was meticulously mechanically maintained, extremely well cared for and obviously never saw any abuse. It was among the most original cars of this vintage I had ever seen. Though I am a GM guy and have owned only one Packard, a (’56 400 Coupe), 27 years ago, this one caught my eye especially because of its originality. I am no longer able to be involved in restorations, but just had to see this car done. There was no need for a mechanical restoration, but I did have the cosmetics tended to. It shows 84,356 actual miles, give 100 or so. This is documented by the fact that the miles stated on the May-5-1971 inspection sticker are 83,558. It was only driven another 798 more miles afterward. It is also witnessed in the condition of the car, very obvious. The elderly collector didn’t drive it, but it was always inside and cared for. Upon my buying it, I had it tuned and serviced. It started right up, sputtered for a couple of minutes, smoothed out, cleared up and was driven around the block. Equipment -288 C.I. Motor --Block Production Date: 12-30-48 --Head Production Date: 1-8-49 -3 Speed Standard Transmission -Overdrive -Electromatic Clutch -Hounds tooth Cloth Interior -Build Sheet Data… (2265-9 NC 14471 EMC OD FSE OB RR PEL 67..) 828 written in pencil on the bottom of the sheet. (See Photo) Vehicle Condition Mechanical Motor The original 288 C.I. motor has never been rebuilt and is excellent. I had the original water pump and thermostat (dated 12/48) replaced. This was done preemptively because they still worked just fine. The cooling system was flushed and the original radiator is excellent with no rot or corrosion build up. The motor is tight and strong. It makes no adverse noises and sounds great just like an obviously well-kept motor should. Excellent and purrs like a kitten… As might be expected with many older cars, it does leak some oil when parked. Transmission The original 3 speed standard transmission shifts smoothly just as it should. The clutch is also excellent. Rear End Excellent Suspension The front end suspension is excellent. It appears to be original also. It is tight with no slack or slop. It tracks straight as it should. Tires The wide white wall tires are excellent with less than 100 miles driven. Exhaust Excellent Brakes Excellent Paint The car has had a repaint. It was done in RM base coat and clear coats. As you Packard guys will know, the color combination is very rare. Both are the factory colors the car came with when new. The top color is Spruce Green (D) and the bottom is non-metallic Egyptian Sand (C). RM provided the formulas and the colors were matched and tented to the original paint in order to get them correct. The metallic is correct on the green. The non-metallic Egyptian is also right on. The paint is beautiful. The two colors are extraordinary together, especially against the interior. Body The body was and is excellent. This is a rust free car. There was and is no rust in the trunk, floors, rockers, doors, fenders, quarter panels, tail panel, trunk lid, hood, firewall or top. It was and is a nice solid Texas body. There was evidence found of previous minor damage. This repair was made to the rear drivers’ quarter by the wheel. It appears to have happened early on in life, was nicely repaired and of no consequence. Chrome The chrome pieces were removed and redone with the exception of the wing window frames and hub caps. The stainless pieces were also removed and professionally polished. Glass All but the passenger door window and driver door vent window are original glass. The glass is very nice showing some age as expected, but still looks great with no cracks. The new glass does not stand out against it. The original passenger door glass had a small crack and the driver side wing window glass cracked when the new rubber was installed. Interior The interior is excellent. The headliner, seats covers, carpet, door and rear side panels have all been replaced with the right colors. The front mat and door arm rests are original. The original hounds tooth was replaced with a slightly larger pattern, but in the original colors. There is a sample from the original wool in the glove compartment. The original steering wheel dash chrome and glove compartment are excellent. Summary This is a wonderful car. The colors are rare, the interior beautiful and well optioned. It tracks arrow straight down the road running and drives much as I’m sure it did when new. It is one of the tightest driving cars of this era I’ve had the pleasure of. It has been a lot of fun and is truly an amazing automobile. There are only minor things to do. The largest being, the fuel gauge is stuck on E, it needs a temp sending unit, but does not run hot and the speedometer isn’t working, though it was the last time the car was driven. Small things like that. All the big, hard and expensive things are done. I think you will find this to be an excellent car. On Jun-11-12 at 11:45:26 PDT, seller added the following information: Please Note: I received a call from a very knowledgeable Packard Man concerning the color green that is on the upper portion of this car. As seen on the build sheet, it is (N) for Sylvan Green and not (C) for Spruce. The color was carefully matched to the original and is right, my mistake concerning the information… Thanks go to Frank Frisch.
