Vehicle Detail
OVERVIEW: This is a very original 1929 Nash Advanced Six Twin Ignition Model 470 Sedan in roadworthy condition. These cars rode on a 121” wheelbase and were powered by a 78 horse, 278 ci., OHV inline 6-cylinder engine. This was an innovative year for Nash in which they introduced their “Twin Ignition” on their OHV models only, 2 spark plugs firing each cylinder, one on each side of the block. This was also the first year that Nash used chrome brightwork. Another noteworthy feature of this car is the Bijur centralized chassis lubrication system, a feature found only on higher level cars, such as Stutz for example. It also sports optional dual sidemounts and wire wheels. This particular ’29 Nash has been a dry western Canada vehicle its entire life, having spent all its years in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta. The present owner, a retired mechanic, has been the second owner of this vehicle since 1962. He acquired the rust free but tired looking car in Saskatchewan from the original owner, and since then it has been in Calgary, Alberta. It carries serial # 488408, and the odometer shows 54,560 original miles. Although the odometer is no longer working, it is believed that this mileage is not far off original as the car has only seen sporadic local enjoyment over the years. The car has had various restoration tasks performed over time to keep it in roadworthy condition and comfortable. The engine was rebuilt for its original owner back in the late 1940’s, but then saw little use, and as such it still runs and sounds strong today. During the 1970’s, the current owner did most of the other mechanical and body and paint work, during which time the body was removed from the chassis. There have been no modifications from original done to this vehicle, and in fact the owner retained all the old original parts that were replaced on the car and they will go with the car. It has proven its reliability over the years by having been on numerous local outings and was used as a wedding car by all his children. This is a solid and roadworthy car which has a combination of original and restored aspects. DRIVETRAIN: The engine is the original rebuilt 278 ci. OHV inline 6-cylinder engine that starts and runs strong, and sounds good. Twin Ignition provides 2 ‘airplane type’ spark plugs for each cylinder and dual coils. It is a high compression engine, bore and stroke are 3 7/16” x 5”, and is equipped with 7 main bearings, solid valve lifters, and Marvel updraft carb. A 6 volt electric fuel pump was added to aid in filling the vacuum tank, but the vacuum tank does work. All other components on and around the engine are correct originals and operate as required, having been maintained and serviced over the years to keep the car roadworthy and reliable. The engine compartment is not detailed, but is relatively clean showing only the light grime and wear of its use. All hoses and belts appear in good condition. The radiator is original and in good condition, having been repaired and flushed. Generator, starter, and water pump have all been rebuilt. It is the original 3 speed standard transmission, which has been rebuilt, and is equipped with a coincidental ignition/transmission lock, an anti-theft device of the day. The clutch was also replaced at that time. The rear axle is original, also rebuilt, with no problems, other than the usual minor oil drip hanging from it. CHASSIS: The chassis is all original and restored as was required, showing only the road dirt and grime of its miles. The frame was sandblasted clean and painted, it is very solid and straight. An enhanced feature of these cars was the Bijur centralized chassis lubrication system. This system provided a lubricant reservoir with a pedal under the dash, to the left of the clutch pedal, which when depressed would route lubricant to all the chassis lube points thru tubing and valving. This provided an easy means of keeping the chassis components lubricated at all times, even on the fly. The original manufacturer of this system is still in business today under the name Bijur Delimon International, and most of the tubing, valves, and other components are still available from them today. The Bijur system on this car is complete, but the lines are broken at the spring shackles. Front end, suspension components, brake system, and exhaust have all been restored and maintained as required, and appear to be in good serviceable condition. Leaf spring suspension professionally rebuilt by Standen’s of Calgary. The car is equipped with Houdaille hydraulic shock absorders. The complete mechanical brake system was rebuilt. Front brakes are internal expanding and the rears are external contracting. The gas tank was flushed, repaired, and internally coated for corrosion protection. The running tires and dual spares are a new matched set of BF Goodrich Silvertown wide white wall, bias ply, 6.00x20’s. They are about 3 years old, in excellent condition, with very few miles. They are mounted on six original option wire wheels sporting correct original Nash hubcaps. BODY & PAINT: This was a very original and rust free body when the current owner acquired the car. The wood structure for the most part was good, but several pieces were replaced as needed in the top and sill areas. The wood remains solid today, and the doors appear to fit well with no droop or looseness on the hinges. The door bottoms are clean and rust free. It carried original paint prior to its only repaint back in the mid 1970s, along with its share of small dents and dings. The car was repainted its original colors minus the pin striping, and in fact, it still has original paint on the door and body jambs as they were not redone. The amateur bodywork is evident, a bit lumpy here and there with sanding scratches visible, but the car remains very solid and basically straight with no signs of collision damage. Given the years that have passed since body and paint work was done, I believe there are no hidden surprises with this car. Overall a very good original car with older restoration of body and paint. The older restoration of body and paint is typical of an average amateur job of the 70’s. It shows some blemishes in the prep and paint, but no signs of excess filler, and no rust is showing after many years. There was no opportunity to wash off the storage dust prior to picture taking, but given its age, the driver quality paint job has held up and shows the minor stone chips of its use and miles. The door bottoms are clean and rust free. The rockers and sill steps all appear solid. The car sports an original exterior sun visor and rear luggage rack. New wood running boards were made but still require rubber matting. Welting on the cowl and rad shell was not replaced. New top fabric was installed about 3 years ago, same time as upholstery was done. ELECTRICAL: The car retains its original 6-volt electrical system. The wiring is mostly original, some replaced with modern wire. The attractive gauges are in original condition ranging from good to fair. The amp and oil pressure gauges work, the temperature, fuel, clock and speedo do not. Indicator arms are missing off the temp gauge and clock. The heat riser control under the center dash is broken off. All driving lights and add-on turn signals are in working order. Car sports nice large cowl lights. There is a complete extra set of headlights with matched lenses, the two lenses on the car are mismatched. The tail light sports a nice original Nash scripted glass lens, but the brake light is not working. Windshield wiper is vacuum, but missing arm. The horn blows loud and strong. INTERIOR: The interior upholstery is new in the last 3 years, and is tasteful and comfortable. The seats, door and side panels are done in a matching mohair type of material, close to the original material and pattern. New carpeting and headliner also. Rear seat passengers are provided with a grab bar on the back of the front seat backrest, and a moveable brass footrest with nickel plated end brackets. A very nice feature is the original wood graining on the dash and window garnish moldings. Although not perfect, it is in good original condition and quite attractive. It contains 2 different colors and grains, enhanced with hand painted pin striping, and that is also carried over onto the original window garnish moldings, which are also in decent survivor condition. The steering wheel is also in original condition, some cracking and some chipping but remains useable and is not crumbling apart as so many do. It sports 4 of the Nash crests molded into the bakelite hub ring. The door sills are original and are embossed with the Nash logo. There are a couple of mismatched interior door and window crank handles. All glass on the car is original plate glass in good condition. The windshield crank handle is missing. Original beveled glass rear view mirror, and original dome light. BRIGHTWORK: This was the first year that Nash used chrome bright work on their cars. Both front and rear bumpers on the car were rechromed in the late 60’s, and the plating has held up very well. There is a home made tow bar mounted on the front of the car which is easily removed. The radiator shell is original chrome and is straight with no cracks, although there are a couple of ‘soft’ dents on the front face. It sports a nice Nash emblem in good condition. The crank hole cover is missing, and there is no crank handle for it. All other bright work on the car is original and in generally good condition. Hubcaps are 6 correct originals. SUMMARY: Few options were available on these cars when they were new, and as such this Nash Advanced Six is well optioned with its dual spares and wire wheels, and leather upholstery appears to be the only missing option. It has only had restoration work done to keep it roadworthy, presentable and comfortable. As an older, partial restoration, it has proven itself reliable throughout its life and remains a useable car. This is a very affordable car to enter into the hobby with, or add to an existing collection. It would be ideal for family outings and touring, which is what it has always done. The things it needs or that could be improved on can be done over time, while having fun with it. There should be no hidden secrets or horrors with this car. If you are considering a roomy and stately styled sedan from the roaring ‘20s, then this could be it! You won’t need to spend several years in the garage restoring it.
