Vehicle Detail

This is an extremely low mileage and original Series I Clenet, car #215, one of a pair that were used largely for display, thus accounting for the low mileage and like new condition. They are rumored to have been used by Wrigley for his Chewing Gum advertising for Doublemint Gum, but this has not been confirmed. The Clenet was the creation of Alain Clenet, a French-born designer, who founded Clenet Coachworks in Santa Barbara, California. His concept was to produce a very limited number of personalized cars to the owner's specifications with a 1930s design. Clenet utilized the chassis and drive train of a Lincoln Continental, thus making service simple and readily available. The Lincoln engine is a 351-400 cubic inch V8 with two Venturi downdraft carburetors, automatic 3-speed transmission and power steering. Only 248 Series I cars were made, plus one prototype, using only the finest materials. English leather upholstery, lambs wool carpeting, burl wood dash, crystal ashtray and etched vent windows gave the car an elegance complementing the exterior design. Danish teak wood accents, pin stripping and elegant extra lighting adorn the exterior. This particular car also has a padded leather removable hardtop. The cars were largely stored and then sold to a collector who also kept the mileage low. Ironically, the twin car also resides in San Diego (car #216). Values of Series I cars escalated rapidly during their production and today are highly collectable. Alain Clenet also produced a Series II and III before the factory regrettably closed in the early 1980's. The Clenet was referred to as "driven art" by Fortune Magazine and Automotive Age referred to Clenets as "The American Rolls-Royce". Interviewed in 1978, Clenet explained his concept in building the Series I: "My intent was to build the most excellent automobile I could, and build so few of them that they could be truly personalized."
