Vehicle Detail
Located in Southern California is this extremely rare factory documented American Motors AMX with its factory build sheet. Verified to be a true Big Bad Orange, Shadow Mask, Go-Package car with factory leather seats, air conditioning, Posi-Traction twin grip, heavy-duty cooling and much more. This rare, fully loaded AMX has spent its entire life in Texas and California. According to the build sheet this car was ordered by the Texas dealer as a special order floor room (SL-CL=F) car. These cars were typically loaded with options and displayed front and center near large glass windows to get attention and draw customers. This rare car is also factory correct and documented to have the optional RimBlo steering wheel, Magnum 500 Rims, Heavy-Duty Suspension, heavy-Duty electronics (larger 55 Amp Alternator, Cold start Package & Heavy-Duty Battery), optional Push Button AM Radio, Power Disc Brakes and Power Steering. Finding a 1970 AMX with this many options is rare…But finding one with the build sheet to back them up is even more so. Of the original 122-BBO AMXs made for 1970, only 15 have been documented & registered as survivors. Less than ½ are Shadow-Mask and of those remaining 7 cars how many have their factory build sheets to prove it? This car has its factory installed High-Performance Ram-Air Induction 360 motor with less than 1000 miles on a complete rebuild. It runs and drives exceptionally strong and clean. It was rebuilt with hardened valve seats for modern gas. It also features the factory-correct satin Black Shadow Mask engine compartment. The freshly rebuilt Borg Warner M11 automatic transmission performs great and shifts as it is supposed to. The rear is a Posi-Traction limited slip and it currently runs red line Series tires with correct factory Magnum 500 style wheels. As mentioned it also has a factory Heavy-Duty cooling system. Everything is in great order and the car keeps cool. It also has factory power steering with the factory optional Rim-Blo steering wheel. The wheel was restored by “RimBlo Buddy” restoration service. The steering feels great at both high and low speeds. The rear differential is restored as factory color and specs. The shocks are brand new Koni high performance and provide an excellent firm ride. As you can see in the photo. The trunk light operates properly and turns on when opened. The correct spare and canister have been restored. Everything looks great. The dash board instruments have been restored and all are functional. The tachometer works great. The factory clock was also rebuilt and tics away as it should. All dash lights function. The radio is hooked up to power but there is no speaker connected. I have never really felt a need to install a speaker since the fun of this car has always been the feel and sound. All the A/C parts have been rebuilt and restored, but has not been charged due to my area’s weather. No loose window problems like so many AMX and Javelins have. The glass is in great shape. The rear window has some minor marks on it, but you can only see them from certain angles when the lighting is just right. The seats are new and in excellent shape with the correct Black leather. Like everything else, the carpeting is fresh and new. The headliner is excellent. All inner panels had been restored. All trim is great. The wood grain dash panel is factory and was too nice to replace. It has some light nicks to the paint, but I figured that original aged is better than a fresh cheap reproduction. The paint is really excellent. The black Shadow Mask was done in the correct luster. It is somewhere in-between Matte ad Satin as it should be. As mentioned earlier the engine compartment is correctly painted to match. Everything was disassembled with the engine and suspension removed for paint. All of the front suspension was taken apart and restored before being rebuilt and re-assembled. The Big Bad Orange is the factory correct shade. In order to preserve the door tag and factory applied serial sticker, the inner factory door paint was polished and buffed instead of painted over. It takes VERY close inspection to notice this and it helps preserve the correctness of this car. As with so much else, the gas tank and sending unit are brand new too. This car is completely ready to just jump in and drive. I have included a ton of photos. The photos are a good representation of the car. It is about 3% preserved and 97% restored. It is one of the nicest 1970 AMXs available and should make someone a great car. I have driven this car as far as San Diego and Santa Barbara and wouldn’t hesitate driving it anywhere. You are only limited by the amount of miles you want to put on such a nice car. THIS CAR IS FAST! I CAN’T STRESS HOW MUCH FUN THIS CAR IS TO DRIVE. Everything is tight and solid. She drives and handles exceptionally well. While everything was built to look factory correct, a little larger cam was used along with a high performance carb (hidden under the restored factory air cleaner) and a large exhaust were installed. This car is a blast to drive on both long and short trips. It is completely reliable and comfortable so you can just jump in and go! I have set the reserve well below what I spent and have into this car. I am selling it because I need to free up garage space. I have too many nice cars and NO room. It’s a great car and someone will be very happy with it. If you have any questions please let me know. I will answer them quickly. Also, you are welcome to inspect the car BEFORE the auction closes.
