Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a 1966 VW Beetle that is partially restored. My husband was in the process of restoring the car to original when he became ill and was unable to complete it. I haven't the knowledge or talent to complete it myself and sadly need to sell it now. I can get help for you to re-install the wheels(it will have to be towed off due to lack of brake lines). As best as I can tell it is worth between 5 and 15K when done . If you see it, you WILL want to buy it!! I have taken many photos from all angles so you can see what a potential stunner this can/will be when finished! And at almost 50 years old..... Let me give you some details. It is a 1966 (I think it is actually called a 66 ½) that is 6 VOLT and has all its original upholstery. It had covers on seats, so the only minor damage is the piping(?) on driver's seat is partially loose about 2" but not torn (maybe re-glue it?)on one small spot on the left side. There are several special things about this car. It has a sunroof (does NOT leak) and has only 38,600 miles on the original engine. YES that is right 38 not 138!! It was owned by a medical doctor who was involved with Doctors without Borders and he spent most of the year overseas, using this only during the 2 or 3 months he was home.It was running when we brought it here but had no brakes. My husband intention was to save all of the original parts and restore it to stock. It is I would guess 65% done, there really is not a lot left to do, he had taken it down to the last bolt in many areas and put it back. I have ALL the parts! New windshield installed by Cherrydale glass! So what is done? He redid (fiberglass) the back floors and seating areas as far as the front passenger's seats. Most of the brake and axle wheel assemblies. Both rear wheel wells and all rear end areas except for back deck I guess it's called under rear window. This in fact only became an issue in the last year. I had not even looked inside car in about a year and when I did, I discovered a small leak had started and it had been leaking onto deck for some time. I have "cleaned up" the area removing all rust and damaged foam, carpet, etc. and lightly sprayed with gray primer so no more damage will occur (I hope I did the right thing). The plastic seat backing is still fine and some carpeting still remains back there. A simple fiberglass job will restore it completly. The only other area that will need rust attention (I think)is some near the gas pedal. I looked under the original rubber mat and can see some surface rust but the foam (sound dampener pad?) is glued down and I decided to leave it be. The passenger's side looks good(see photo 17). If you know how to fiberglass what's left to do will be a snap, and of course you can always just go on line and order parts to bolt on (that is just not the way my husband was going to do it).The only big purchase I think will be running boards and carpet and re-chroming, otherwise it is mostly labor (a labor of love for any bug guy or gal!!). I have all the fenders, wheels, hubcaps, trim, and bumpers (he was going to keep original parts and have them rechromed). Also have new battery, brake shoes front and back and spring kits, headlight lens, brake lines (the longest one is already installed)some gaskets new key blank and more. Was told that the spare has never been used.He actually had ALL the parts to finish, but I lost my job and had to sell the new running boards, fender welting, gasket sets, new carpet and a few other things. I do however have his order list with all model numbers so that re-ordering what is needed will be a snap! Also have some fiberglass mat and most of a can of resin which I will be happy to include with the sale. Also all the catalogs and list he used to order every part you could possibly want or need. Call now and you can have it ready for the big Bug meet in Manassas,Va. this summer! Sure to get you attention there! I can provide further photos to anyone providing valid email address.I will check email several times daily. 3/31/12: SELLER NOTE: TO ALL WHO HAVE READ AD PREVIOUSLY I MADE A SERIOUS MISTATEMENT!! THIS IS A SIX VOLT CAR NOT 12 AS STATED EARLIER!!! I AM SORRY IF MY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE HAS ALTERED YOUR DECISION TO BID. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.On Apr-03-12 at 07:43:27 PDT, seller added the following information: 4/2/12 NOTE: I wanted just to mention that this is NOT as stated in an email to me a “basket/bucket” case where someone has taken it apart and you get a pile of parts in boxes and bags! I believe in truthful advertising, I could have reinstalled fenders and bumper and let you “wonder” while it would look better in a photo, but I have chosen to show what there is to do still….When you do a total renovation to stock you take it apart, clean it up, fix or replace and put it back together. This is what has been done. If my husband had not died I would not be running this ad it would be done. I am trying to find it a new home where it can be finished. You are not getting a mystery, if you can’t see/know this maybe you shouldn’t bid.Look at fender photos all bolts are in their holes and tightened up. I in fact have only 2 boxes 1 with the wheel covers and lug nuts etc, and old brake parts and 1 with new brakes&springs, headlight lens cover, new key blank and misc gaskets. I have about another dozen photos if anyone wants to see them, send a valid email address. Or I am only an hour and a half from DC or Richmond come and take a look! Thanks for looking and good luck in your bidding.
