Vehicle Detail
Offered for sale is this beautiful example of the late 40's Plymouth Special Deluxe. It's subtle art-deco styling and extra interior features were superior to the Fords and most GM vehicles at the time. I am selling this car because I need garage space. The car has an interesting story to tell that I can send along with detailed pictures to an interested buyer. The car is a true survivor. It is totally solid and never had any rust of any kind anywhere. I purchased it in 1986 with 31,000 miles. There is an original oil change sticker on the door from 1968 showing 27,000 miles. I completed a meticulous restoration on the car in 1989. The original paint was faded. The car was professionally repainted the original Balfour Green using epoxy primer. It still looks terrific today. Great attention was paid to detailing the car throughout keeping as much original as possible. A second restoration was completed in 2011 including the following: Complete new master cylinder, all new wheel cylinders and hoses. New Firestone WW tires and tubes from Coker tire. The wheels were powder coated the original color. The complete chassis was detailed underside with new shock absorbers. The trans and diff oil was changed. Everything was removed in the engine bay and the original engine block repainted the correct silver from Bill Hirsch. Oil pan and valve covers were repainted and new gaskets. The valves were adjusted in 2011. The compression is very good and the engine runs super quiet. The insides of this engine are cleaner than the outside and virtually no wear is showing on the cam lobes. The oil has always been changed each year. The radiator was cleaned and repainted. A new water pump was installed, all new hoses. The carb was cleaned and rebuilt. A new battery was purchased in 2011. The glass is all clear and the stainless is near perfect. The chrome is all perfect except the rear bumper shows some age. N.O.S. Wiper blades are brand new. The headlights are brand new. I have the original sealed beams and they are date stamped 1947, one of them still works! The original interior is amazing. The headliner is like new with no stains. The seats are original and show no wear. There is some minor wear on the lower drivers side seat valance. The door panels were redone in the original restoration. The arm rests were replaced with exact original reproductions last year (the old ones were nice but these are better). The dashboard woodgrain is perfect as is all the glass and chrome. Glove box is like new and has the original manual in it along with some 1950's road maps. All of the guages and lights work. The radio also works. The electric clock works but is disconnected. The original rubber matt in front is in good condition as is the rear carpet. The fuel tank is clean and the gas guage works but is not completely accurate above 1/2 full. This car won a Bronze Carl Benz award at the pretigious Geneva Concours de Elegance in August of 2009 (see www.genevaconcours.net for the quality of cars in this show). This is an invitation only event. It has appeared in Collectible Automobile magazine in April 1992, and is featured in the hard cover book "Cars of the Fascinating 40's" by Publications International, Ltd. This is an awesome car that speaks to the post war era when styling was king and build quality was high. There are completely restored cars that are as nice looking as this but there is likely nothing that compares to this combination of originality and good restoration choices. The car comes with boxes of extra parts, some N.O.S. Also includes a car cover, several hard to find manuals and a high quality aluminum hub puller (needed to pull rear drums). The car has been driven to shows in season and little else. I want this car to go to a good home. Transport must be arranged by buyer. Car is located in western suburbs of Chicago. Serious inquiries and questions please call me 630-587-5677.
