POP IT LIKE IT’S HOT - BRICK HAUS IS UP FOR WORLDWIDE AUCTION! Greetings from NYC. If you’re looking, you probably already know what you see. And, she’s always been well-maintained and garaged, all the numbers match, the paint is 90% original with no body work or rust, she’s stock inside, and neither the engine nor the transmission have ever been opened. Our third Westy, Brick Haus is our ticket to great escapes from the city. In the past four years she has taken us to Martha’s Vineyard, the Adirondacks, the Berkshires, the Catskills, Lake Champlain, the Hamptons, the Jersey Shore, and Assateague Island. (And she’s always up for a quick trip to IKEA or Trader Joe’s.) We're the third owners, and we bought her from a high school drafting teacher in Harrisburg, PA, who pampered and garaged her for nearly 10 years after buying from the original owner (who bought her new from the local Harrisburg VW dealer). We were able to buy because the previous owner bought a newer one, and now we’re selling for the same reason: we’ve just bought another, one-owner, slightly newer (still Vanagon) Westy. She needs nothing except the open road in spring. And in this condition she will certainly find the right steward to care for her. Tasteful upgrades include: GoWesty-style tinted Rhino-lining South African grill with Hella H-4’s Boston Acoustics coax speakers in stock housing & Sony media receiver w/ Bluetooth that interfaces perfectly with your Ipod, Iphone or other 3g/4g smartphone Leather Wheelskin 2000-watt power inverter + deep cycle auxiliary batteries Front & rear mud flaps Mats throughout Metal OEM “Wolfsburg” hubcaps (much better than the plastic stock covers that tend to pop off) The first three pictures below are from a 1984 Dealer Sales Brochure, and I added them to show how original she is. The actual pictures up top of the exterior, interior, drive train, and undercarriage should do the talking. We’re in JaxHts, Queens, right off the E, F, and 7 at the 74th Street Roosevelt Avenue subway stop and very near the LIE and the BQE. Local buyers are encouraged to personally inspect. We will also work with out-of-state and foreign buyers. Truck or ship her, or fly into LGA and I’ll pick you up so you can take the long way home. ;-) Winner must secure purchase within 48 hours with at least $1000 and must pay in full within seven (7) calendar days. Wire transfers or certified cashiers checks preferred, and I will be happy to provide the details to the winning bidder. Please feel free to email with questions, and I will reply promptly. -------------------- o -------------------- POWER TRAIN: Original, unopened, gasoline, water-cooled 1.9 Liter, 82 HP, 1915cc, Otto “Wasserboxer” motor with Air Flow Control (AFC) fuel injection and 4 speed manual transmission with 167xxx miles. Fuel lines, filters, fuel pump, alternator, starter, slave cylinders, brake cylinder, brakes, rotors, and coolant have been replaced as needed and all within the last 20K miles. Complete tune-up performed within the last 5K miles. All power train work performed exclusively by Ken Wolford, proprietor at VANAGAIN in Milford, NJ, or by Mike Block, proprietor of Michael’s European Motorworks in Yonkers, NY. Runs excellent and needs nothing. No oil or coolant leaks, and her 2011 BLACKSTONE LABS oil analysis was perfect. We put about 5K per year on her. With proper maintenance, I would expect at least another four years/20K miles before she may need major work. EXTERIOR: 90% original LH8B Assuanbraun paint. The other 10% is a GoWesty-style upgrade: rhino-lined, color-matched rocker panels. Color was professionally mixed into the rhino-lining, matches 98%, and the work was performed by Dan Miller, proprietor at RED BARN RESTORATIONS. (The Baywindow on his home page was also mine.) Some tiny, barely noticeable nicks in the nose. Also a long touched-up scratch down the back hatch and a small, touched up ding in the rear corner at thigh-level. (Previous owner did it, not worth repairing until a full paint job is warranted, perhaps in another 10 years if properly garaged and waxed. ) INTERIOR: Original beige furniture with Blue/Brown “Van Dyck” (KD) striped upholstery. Original buyer chose not to equip with A/C. (With only 82 HP, you don’t really want A/C. ) All stock and in fantastic condition. Accurately described above, but Brick Haus is still almost 30 years old. Therefore and as with any automobile of this vintage, she has faults and is not new. She is, however, one of the best, most original '84 Westys available. Sold "as is" and bid with confidence. On Mar-11-12 at 19:40:19 PDT, seller added the following information: ***Upgrade Alert*** So I ordered one of those improved city water hook-ups from GoWesty for our new bus and then I thought, "why not Brick Haus too?" Installed it today. Looks like a million bucks and works like magic! Wondering what I am referring to? Check Part# HOOKUP-CW on GoWesty's site (along with the video) and you'll see what I mean.On Mar-13-12 at 08:04:46 PDT, seller added the following information: A few of you have stopped by to inspect (and to make offers in person). Thank you. One observation that keeps coming up is that BH smells and looks unusually clean. How so? Well, we use a Coleman stove outside, so we don't cook inside. Last thing we would want is for our camper to smell like bacon! Cheers. On Mar-15-12 at 20:48:30 PDT, seller added the following information: ***Cut To The Chase Alert*** First I would like to thank you all for your questions, expressions of interest, and offers. In the past week I have corresponded with fellow enthusiasts worldwide: Netherlands, Germany, UK, Puerto Rico, NY, PA, CT, OH, ME, MA, NJ, FL, OR, WA, and CA, of course. As of 11pm EST on 3/15 112 E-bayers are tracking this auction. Amazing. Furthermore, several of you have made substantive and direct cash offers, ranging from 10K to 11.25K. I appreciate this. With these numbers, I now think it makes sense to disclose how much I expect to receive for Brick Haus. We all know what happens at the end of these auctions so the bidding might well go higher, but I’m not in this for the highest bid. Rather, I want BH to go to the right buyer for the right price, and this BUY IT NOW price will be 12.5K. So as of Friday 3/16, at around 7PM PST (to give the west coast crew a chance), there will be a $12,500 Buy It Now option on this auction. One of you lucky enthusiasts who have been watching this auction will probably see the writing on the wall, and you will cut to the chase. That new steward should: have a garage, know old cars, be handy (or have the means to pay someone), and love to camp, drive, and have fun because BH has tons of life left in her. Be well, stay tuned, and may the right buyer win! On Mar-16-12 at 08:32:39 PDT, seller added the following information: ***New in 2012: Ebay now has a policy that prohibits a Seller from adding a Buy it Now option once bidding begins.*** (Prior to 2012 this was not the case. In fact, this is exactly how I bought her from the owner in PA.) But no matter: BH is still for sale, at auction, on Ebay. End result: please ignore the comment above about Buy It Now. We're going to have to wait this out till Monday night, and hats off to the highest bidder. Be well, JLJ
