General: 1980 Jeep CJ-7 4 Wheel Drive 4-Speed manual transmission 4.2 Liter (258 cubic inch) In-Line 6 cylinder engine Manual steering & brakes (fewer things to go wrong) Recent Virginia inspection good until December, 2012 I bought the Jeep in October, 2010. The body is in fair condition. I would rate just about everything else as good condition. It has paint scratches, and rust. But, runs well and is solid enough to pass the Virginia safety inspection. It is old enough to not require an emissions test in Virginia. Although, a hard-nosed technician might fail the "safety" inspection because the exhaust no longer has a catalytic converter. Recent Work (since bought in October, 2010): 3 New tires (one is the spare) + front end alignment. All tires are 31.5-inch Michellin LTX/MS and have excellent tread. New Halogen H4 headlamps New chrome valve cover (old one was leaking oil really badly, and the only metal one I could find was chromed) Replaced rear main bearing seal and oil pan gasket (did this because replacing just the valve cover gasket did not fix the oil leak) New oil pump (while replacing the oil pan gasket) Replaced the right rear body mount under front of roll bar on the passenger side New (higher 100/70 amp) alternator Rebuilt carburetor and installed fuel regulator -because unregulated, the gas pressure overpowers the floats. New steering tie rods, steering column coupling and bearing New stainless steel rear view mirrors (previous owner fitted later model mirrors that were completely useless) New brake Master Cylinder New rear axle shafts New rear brake pads (because of rear axle work) New windshield wiper switch and pump for fluid reservoir Additional Accessories worth mentioning: suspension lift (2 inch?) and oversized tires Exhaust headers Stainless steel exhaust (after the headers) Aftermarket Weber carburetor Hard top (black) Soft top (beige) Problems (in priority based on my opinion): Gas gauge does not work Rear axle Here, I just don't trust the rear axle housing. There was an oil leak from the right rear seal that caused it to fail the safety inspection when I first purchased the Jeep in 2010. In November, 2011 the same issue occurred. So, I suspect that the housing is untrue and causing the seal to fail. Rust -it is over 30 years old after all Oil pressure gauge is flaky (needle sometimes jumps around from an occasional short in the wire) Soft top is worn -windows have slight fog + seams could use some repair The hard top fit-and-finish is rather poor. Although, that might be easy to fix by someone more familiar with fitting Jeep hard tops. Also, I do not have keys for the locks and the rear gas struts are non-existent. Radio stopped working Interior gauge lights do not always stay on (headlight switch is worn) transmission shifts a little sloppy I expect a $500 PayPal deposit within 72 hours by the winning bidder with the remainder to be paid with a certified check or PayPal before pickup of the vehicle.
