MANY DOCUMENTS AND SUPPORTING PAPERWORK - RUNS FANTASTIC - TO BE SOLD WITH NO RESERVE !! You are viewing a very special 1964 Studebaker Avanti R-1 coupe. This Avanti has some very special history. I will tell you all I know about the car. The car was sold new on January 21, 1964. It was sold by North Park Sales and Service located at 1640 N.LaSalle st. Chicago, Illinois. It was sold to William M Miller who lived in Fort Madison, Iowa. The Studebaker factory at the time was located in nearby South Bend, Indiana. Production was stopped in 1964 and this car was one of the last 5 off the assembly line. The car was sold to a cousin of the President of the Corporation at the time, Sherwood H. Egbert. In September of 1972 Mr. Miller passed away and the car was sold to her best friend who was the ex wife the President Egbert. Egberts ex wife Mary Stark of Cincinnati, Ohio became the new owner and at her request in 1982 Avanti took the car back into the factory and a new Engine - the very last Studebaker shortblock was installed and the body was completely restored. In 1982 the car was sent back to the factory so that the new engine which was located by Bill Braunsdorf the assembly manager at the South Bend plant could take the project under his wing. The work took over a year to complete. Mr. Braunsdorf also arranged to put the car through the factory body and paint shop. This gave it a beautiful finish and it was showed at the July 1983 National show in South Bend where it took second place. Its quite amazing that Braundorf was able to locate a brand new engine still in the original crate so many years later. I have documents to support this. In 1999 Mrs.Stark moved to Washington D.C. and in 2001 she passed away and the car was sold to then a local politician named Dennis Curtin. He kept the car in pristine condition and continued to show the car at every regional event. He even had a wooden carved model of the car hand made and mounted on his wall in congress. I have the original piece along with mounds of paperwork as well as photos which will support what I have tried to convey to you in this listing. This Avanti is in good condition, however a cosmetic restoration is in order. The paint is cracking so the body shop would probably have to strip the paint down to the fiberglass and repaint it. The front bumper is also in need of rechroming. The interior is in very good condition showing very little wear. The radio is not working and the A/C needs a charge. One final item worth mentioning is that I do not have the door key. I have many blanks and one could be made quite easily. Several items I had repaired during the short time I have had the car is the oil pan gasket which was leaking a bit has been replaced. The engine had to be lifted from the car to lower the oil pan. I also replaced the spark plugs and the spark plug wires. The bottom line here is that if you are looking for a really cool spring project, this one will yeild you big if you are willing the have the paint and some small things done. I also have an original photo brochure which has all the specs on the car. To find a one of a kind car like this for this kind of money is not easy to find. Thanks for taking the time to check out this listing. The Avanti has an incredible story which dated back to when the design which was drawn by Mr. Raymond Loewy the famed designer of his day. He tried to make a fiberglass sports car for Studebaker that could rival the famous Corvette. Loewy gathered a team of designers near his home in Palm Springs, California and began to design what came to be known as the "X-SHE" project which ultimately became the Avanti. Just Google the history for yourself and you will read all about it. Studebaker was a solid company when the car was built. Some years later the company was bought by the Worthinhgton Corporation who continued the tradition until 9/1/79. Chevrolet engines were used after the the plants closed in 1964. If you have been in the market for such a car, consider your search over. The car runs and drives fantastic. Nearly everything works as it should except the several items I mentioned. I do not think I have ever had a car so rich in history and drives so well. Remember the car is nearly 50 years old, what a tribute to Studebaker. I am offering the car with NO RESERVE however a reasonable offer would be accepted and end this listing. There were 3,257 cars produced during the 1963-1964 period and there are probably less than 500 in existance today. I try to bring you interesting, fun and value oriented vehicles that have been scrutinized by a knowledgeable person. My true endeavor is to allow you an opportunity to purchase a unique and exceptional vehicle at below market prices. A chance own a very special car exists here at a very reasonable price. I have an entire file as well as a box of Studebaker shop manuals, the original owners books and the original sales brochure along with a slew of other intresting Avanti history and club magazines. I will leave the Historic tags on the car for the next owner. I have a clear title in my hands as this fine car is waiting for you here in sunny Boca Raton, Florida. I am located just outside of West Palm Beach and I will be glad to pick you up at either West Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale airports. If you are interested in having the car shipped right to your door I will gladly assist you in making shipping arrangements. I have been using the same shipping company for over 20 years, they offer great service at fair prices. The car also comes with about 10 extra hubcaps that would be very hard to find a full car cover, several keys and a chain of blank Studebaker keys. I also have many extra parts including the special R-12 connector to be able to charge the air Conditioning from time to time. Please call Barry for any further details at 561-251-7077.
