Vehicle Detail
Up for bid is a 1960 Ford F-350 with a 400 gallon tank and pumping equipment. This truck was used as a police aircraft refueling truck in California and has only been in Texas for a little over a year. The truck itself is very clean and original with almost no rust and under 44,000 miles on the odometer. The engine is a 223 ci. 6 cylinder with a four speed manual transmission and a Rockwell rear axle with 5.8?:1 gears. The entire ignition system is all new and the carburetor has just been rebuilt. The engine runs surprisingly well with crisp throttle response, a good strong idle and no problems with the cooling system at all ( it doesn't get above about 160 degrees). It does smoke a little bit if you rev the engine after it's been idling for a while, but during normal operation it doesn't smoke. The clutch, transmission and rearend don't seem to have any problems. The chassis and suspension components seem to all be in tact and original with only minor surface rust and no major pitting anywhere. The old brake fluid has all been bled out with new fluid and the brakes work well. This truck drives just like it's supposed to, not well, but just like a 50 year old 1-ton truck should. The body of this truck is extremely solid. The interior floors are completely rust free. The only note worthy rust on the whole cab is a small area at the lower front corner on the driver side both inside the door jamb and on the other side of that pillar up underneath ( see pictures of both, it's really not bad ). Beyond that, there is a little bit of rust bubbling at the lower corners of the passenger door and on the lower back edge of the cab (see pictures, also not bad ). The front clip and hood are all in really good shape with the only rust being some bubbles at the rear of the fenders at the bottoms. The cab roof has some damage where it was hit at some point (see picture), but it wouldn't be too difficult to improve upon the lousy repair that was done. All of the window glass is perfect. The original wiring and hardware and lighting and dash components and miscellaneous trim are all intact and mostly unmolested. The upholstery is in good condition, but is the same stuff as in old school busses. The tank and pumping equipment look to be complete and may be functional, but I have not tested it. There is a badge on the tank that says "Merit Tank and Body INC. Berkeley California". The whole assembly looks like it was installed on the truck when they were both new. The inside of the tank has a coating and is absolutely flawless. I was told that it was used for aircraft-diesel, but I don't know, it does smell like diesel though. The pump is driven by a PTO which comes off the side of the transmission. I have tested the PTO and it does work and the pump spins. There is also an electric/vacuum controlled governor mounted to the engine that controls the throttle while the PTO is engaged. The governor mechanism obviously hadn't been used in a while so I disconnected it and left it in place, but out of the way, it may or may not work. I build and restore custom and classic cars professionally and I bought this truck for myself specifically because of how good of condition it is in. My plan was to remove the tank and install a regular bed (this chassis takes a 9 foot bed) so that I would have a really nice classic heavy duty pickup to drive. Storage space however, has become an issue for me and now I must pass this opportunity along to the next visionary. The possibilities with this truck are endless. It could be a fuel truck or a heavy duty pickup, or the body and chassis could be used and modified to be a "slammed" hot rod pickup or a traditional gasser if you like.
