Work was done in Fresno. Bus has 300k on engine and chassis with the automatic transmission rebuilt in the last 10k miles. Brakes and tires are fair, and the body does not have any visible rot, cancer, or rust. Aside from misc dings and a few small dents, the body is very straight. Originally a 16-passenger bus, this vehicle has a forward drivers seat and the passenger seat is set back a few feet due to the passenger door. Passenger door can be operated manually with a lever or with a swich that triggers a compressed air system that opens/closes the door - a cool feature of the bus. This vehicle is currently registered on a salvage title (for reasons unknown - it's in good shape) and is driven around town regularly. It is mechanically sound - or at least as much as can be said about any 40 year old vehicle, and the owner deems it dependable. He recently bought a new sprinter van, so this one is surplus. He has owned this bus since about 1991, and has used it all over the bay area. There are some serious cosmetic challenges inside - the floor is plywood, and the seat cushions, drapes, and woodwork are all very, very tired, but are all there and not really damaged so much as just being old and worn/well used. Owner says that the refrigerator is like new and hasn't been used. The fuel gauge became inoperative after a failed attempt to install an aftermarket radio - owner and I both think that the bundle of wild wires dangling under the dash may have something to do with this, and that it may be an easy fix, with easy access if you have a wiring diagram. The radio and odometer are inoperative, speedo does work. The compressed air system that operates the door has two thin air hoses that connect the door mechanism to the compressor/reservoir. They are audibly leaking, and should be replaced. Perhaps as easy as a trip to the hardware store for hose? Not complicated at all. After riding in and inspecting this bus, I conclude that a few weekends of cleaning and sprucing it up would have the interior in really good, clean shape. None of the challenges are mechanical aside from the minor ones listed above - it's all interior decor stuff that can be sourced at a home improvement place, aside from the new seat cushions and new mattress. Bus has leisurely acceleration, and even more leisurely braking as part of its fundamental personality. If you are in a hurry, this isn't your vehicle. Included in the sale is a spare motor that has been manually turned over monthly since it was aquired. It comes with 200k on it and is known to the owner to be "very strong" from a totaled bus of the same model - apparently belonged to a buddy and he snagged it as the carcass went downstream. This bus is overall very complete, but is tired and really needs some attention to detail. Nothing seriously wrong. It is titled as an RV with the state, which keeps the registration at $50 a year. This bus is a diesel, and requires no smog check. Note the double barn doors at the rear that would allow loading of large objects, such as wind-surf or surf boards. This would make a great beach-vehicle, as there's nothing left to damage inside in its present state. Pricing/Value: I was told "4000-$6000" by the fellow in the North Bay here who specializes in parts and repairs for these after he saw photos of it, hence the opening price well below that. These are apparently a niche vehicle and I have been told that people will know what they are looking for in one or they will not. Bus is listed locally for sale as well. This auction is a legally binding contract to buy this vehicle. All vehicles are sold as-is unless otherwise specified. I have done my best to accurately describe this vehicle. It is up to the buyer to come see and further inspect the car before the end of the auction.--> On Jan-07-12 at 10:20:14 PST, seller added the following information: Approximate Length: 19' 9" Approximate Interior Height: 5'9" - according to me alone with a tape measure. May be off by an inch or two. I'm 6'2", and walking around inside is comfortable, although jumping jacks are best done outside. ------ The engine is a non-blown inline 4. Same for the spare engine. Owner informed me that the water pump is leaking slightly. He continues to drive it, and has sent his spare water pump out for rebuilding. The rebuilt pump will be installed at no charge or mailed to the next owner depending on timing and mutual agreement. I got the impression that he'll have it installed within the next week or two, so if you can delay pickup for a few days, that might be in your best interests. Since the compressed air reservoir leaks (lines to door, plus who knows what else), at startup one must run the engine to allow the compressor enough time to fill the reservoir in order to turn the idiot light on the dashboard off. Once filled, the compressor is greater than the leak(s), so everything works fine (and I strongly suspect that the leaks are easy to diagnose and fix - no promises). This is included to explain why one must idle the engine for 60-120 seconds or whatever before dropping the transmission into drive and taking off. Works fine, but lacks the modern-day "appliance" feel that a new vehicle has. Just like almost every other old vehicle out there... ------ Parts for these are available if you know the right people. Owner says that purchase will include contact information for two vendors plus advice about which he prefers and why. ------- In revisiting the van this morning, it struck me that the dash looks tired, but that with some masking tape and matte black spray paint, one could really improve it. This is true for so much of the interior - just a little attention with windex and perhaps some industrial carpet, and so forth and you could really raise the comfort level considerably. ------- There is a shower/toilet. They are untested and have not been used in multiple decades. Same is true of the oven, sink, and refrigerator. If you want to go hardcore camping or an Occupy sort of person, please expect the worst and hope for the best. The equipment looks unused & looks good, but the same was true of my first wife at one time as well. Please presume that there will be some energy required to sort the equipment not involved in daily transportation operations. ------ Also: my word choice was perhaps poor regarding the interior: All soft seating surfaces other than the driver's seat are really horrible and need replacing. The loose mattress in the back is not OK, and the cushions at the table/passenger bench are goners. They're cushions atop wood more than they are automotive upholstery items. They need to be replaced if you have companions with only 2 legs. If you are male and have a female in your life, plan to go to a car wash and then to your buddy's house to do some sprucing up for a few hours BEFORE springing it on her - just a little work will really go a long way here, strategically speaking.
