History: We purchased this vehicle back in April 2008 with 77,122 miles as a one owner car from a local specialty dealer who had taken it on trade toward an E320 Cabriolet. Being the perfectionists that we are, we did a significant amount of cosmetic and mechanical restoration at that time. Some of these items included: · New German weave black soft top with window supplied by GAHH · New factory burgundy leather seat covers supplied by GAHH · New factory floor mats · A dash overlay to cover up some minor cracking along the defrost grills · New center burl wood trim · Refinished all four factory wheels · Full tune-up including new distributor cap, distributor rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil, engine air filter, engine oil, coolant flush, brake fluid flush · New front and rear brake pads and rotors. · New rear main seal · New transmission pan seals · Rebuilt a/c compressor with R134 conversion · Wheel balance & alignment · New MB rear muffler · New overvoltage protection relay · New vacuum actuator for the climate control · New flex discs on drive shaft The car was sold by us in May 2008, one month after we completed all this work, to a local man who used it as a summer weekend toy. Since then we have not seen the vehicle until the owner re-surfaced a few weeks ago looking to trade it in for something newer. Over the course of his ownership, he only put 9,000 miles on the car. He replaced the factory Becker radio because he wanted a cd player (original radio is also included in this sale although we are not sure if it still works) and performed annual oil services. When we got the car back in on trade, we went through it briefly to determine what type of cosmetic and mechanical work it would need going forward to make it yet again perfect. Here’s what we have determined: The tires have plenty of depth to them still, but are dry-rotted on the edges. The paint is much more faded now than it was before and a good buff would certainly help it out but not make it “mint”. The black soft top and interior are still in good shape although the dash overlay seems to be lifting in the center from the sun ($125 replacement is available from several vendors online). There is a key scratch on the drivers’ side fender going into the door that has been touched up (difficult to show in the pictures and difficult to see from 3 feet away). There is a scuff around the right front fender that should be touched up (shown in the pictures). There is some minor seepage around the rear differential (nothing more than any other 560SL I’ve seen). The rear body rubber bushings and rear differential rubber bushings need to be replaced (you would not know it unless you actually jack the car up and look at them with a light). The transmission and engine both operate fine with no known issues. The electronics operate fine with no known issues. We are unsure of the A/C operation although it should still work properly (too cold now here in MA to test it out effectively). There is some minor rocker panel flaking around the front drain holes (typical of these cars and shown well in the pictures) other than that there is NO rot or rust on any of the panels on the car (trunk lid, door bottoms, wheel wells). The chrome is in good shape with the exception of some pitting on the rear trunk lid handle. At one time there must have been a cell phone installed with an antenna on the right rear quarter panel by the trunk lid which was removed and replaced with a color-coded burgundy cap. All the panels appear to be original with VIN tags with the exception of the hood which is missing its VIN tag for some reason. The carfax report is meticulous with the exception of a damage report on 8/16/2009 when a moped drove into the rear bumper of the 560SL while stopped at a light. There was no damage reported and nothing to fix on the 560SL, but an insurance claim was reported for the damaged moped’s front wheel and the moped driver’s doctor visits (crazy but true…). Although this was a perfect car 3 years ago, it’s now a nice car that runs well, looks good and does everything it’s supposed too. Please ask questions and don’t hesitate to call.
