VO2-10 1963 Chevy Corvair Convertible Automatic Power Top Built by General Motors Company, Chevrolet Division Monza 900 20,515 Miles Showing (Exempt True Mileage Unknown) Long, straight body lines. It is easy to see why the Corvair was Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year for 1960. This sporty 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza 900 Convertible will leave you breathless with anticipation, with its fine body in while with black leather interior. The seating is original, and in very good condition. The silver trim accoutrements will make you -- the driver -- to be seen on the road wrapped around you by this sporty Corvairs look and style. By the way, this Monza is unusual in that its top, besides being in tip top condition, is also automatic. Slide into the supple 60s bucket split back bench style seats, press the magic button, and take a top down cruise down your favorite street while enjoying the luxury of having a beautiful vintage classic American convertible and all the excitement owning one brings you, as well as holding a solid real long term value for you in the collectable circles. ABOUT THIS TOPLESS MONZA 900 Body by Fisher Wheelbase: 108 inches Length: 180 inches Tires: Tubeless A78-13 four ply polyester Jack: New jack specially ordered and included 1963 Corvair The Owners Story In 1961, my father bought me my first Corvair. It was a white Monza 2-door hardtop, with a 102 hp. Engine and a 4 speed manual transmission. I really wanted a convertible, but those were hard to come by at the time. Besides, my father being a practical type, felt that a sedan was much more fitting for a 21 year old, who was still in college and should be concentrating on his studies, rather than driving around in a fancy convertible. The EXTERIOR Reflecting back to that time, I am sure that his reasoning was accurate, but in 2004, when I had the opportunity to purchase a 1963 Corvair convertible, I realized I was about to get my wish. The color was white just like my 1961 model. The interior was black instead of red, but the seats were the original vinyl and were in excellent condition. There were signs of age on the padded dash, as well of the door panels, and the kick panels under the dash needed replacing, but the previous owner included a catalogue from Clarks Corvair, a firm that specialized in Corvair parts. It is Friday night, a beautiful breeze, perfect to stop and take in an ice cream. The first item on the agenda was the engine. I felt that the best course of action was to go for a major rebuild. Although, the engine burned, or leaked, plenty of oil, the block was still in good shape. After discussing various options with a Clarks Corvair advisor, I decided to pull the engine and take it to an excellent machine shop in Ocala, Florida. I then ordered oversized pistons and had the cylinders bored out to accommodate them. I also had a slightly modified camshaft installed, as well as a new forged crankshaft. The valves were replaced, as well and Teflon seals were installed. An electric fuel pump was installed, and an over sized oil pan with aluminum cooling fins was fitted to the engine. New valve covers with cooling fins were also installed. A new bearing assembly for the engine cooling fan replaced the original one, and the carburetors were rebuilt. Finally, an Otto automatic drive belt tensioning system was installed. I had also intended to get a 3.08 gear for the final drive, but was told by the gentleman I had hired to assemble the rebuilt engine that the car already had one. In passing I should mention that this Corvair engine can easily be restored to its original configuration, since the cylinders, being air cooled, can be removed and replaced with ones of the original size. She runs so good now. YOU WILL BE SO THRILLED WITH THIS COOL CLASSIC You just do not see them like this anymore! After the time and money spent on restoring this car, some of my friends have asked why I am selling it. My answer is that my life has entirely changed since 2004. I now own a horse farm with 25 horses; most of them have been born in the wild. My fiancee and I spend most of our time caring for them. I have also been coaxed in resurrecting my career as an audio engineer/producer. The space where the Corvair was parked is now taken up by a tack room and extra horse stalls. And once every other month, I travel to North Carolina to attend a board meeting for the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, This would be a road trip that would prove a bit taxing for this Corvair. So, I guess it is time for someone else to give this lovely car the care it deserves. And I will always have the memory of possessing a dream that, for a period of time, would take me back to a time when life in this country was so much simpler. Now time for the next caretaker. Original manual, nice to have and especially nice is the supplement ordered included by the present owner. The POWERTRAIN Rebuilt For Speed and Economy At this point, one might ask why I did not rebuild the engine to stock specs. And add extra carbs or a turbo. I had learned from various people who were familiar with the early Corvair Spyders that the quad carburetor setup was more difficult to keep in sync. Moreover, I have never cared for turbochargers, since they generate a lot of heat and can shorten the life of an engine. Anyway, I was not interested in creating a hotrod. My intention was to have a Corvair that could travel at interstate speeds, without straining the engine, or using excessive amounts of fuel. With the 3.08 final drive, this is certainly possible. Lots of Corvair get up and top down cruising to do. After the engine was completed, I transported the Corvair to a body shop. There, I found that the body was in better shape than I originally thought. The only bad spots were the left and right rear panels which had to be replaced. Since these panels seem to have a history of rusting with Corvairs, Clarks supplied me with the fiberglass set which, when installed, were virtually indistinguishable from the originals. Also, they will never rust. This pancake engine is a winner, especially given the high volume oil pump to cool it, the synchronized twin carbs, the heavy duty clutch, Otto tensioner, and the other things done to it for stability and speed, without giving up efficiency. There are many more detailed pictures of the engine that you won't want to miss in our Photo Gallery (opens in a new window so you can easily get back to this page for, as they say, the rest of the story on this Monza 900) . Four speed manual transmission, just the way Corvairs were so much fun to drive. The Corvair has the distinction of having been the only American made mass produced passenger car to feature a rear mounted air cooled engine. The Corvair engine is an aluminum, horizontally opposed six cylinder that produced 80 HP (60kW) in 1960, but later versions produced as much as 180 HP. But you will find the Corvair in this ad moves along nicely. The INTERIOR I next decided to replace the top. This work was performed by a firm in Dunnellon, Florida, that specialized in convertible tops for older cars. My Corvair is unique in that it actually has a power top. So I had the motor and switch replaced as well. Regarding the interior, I installed a new padded dash, kick panels, and door panels (from Clarks of course). I also installed a new wiring harness under the dash. The seats are fine, but the carpet really should be replaced. There is additional storage behind the back seats. These are the original vinyl seats and are in surprisingly good condition. You want a Corvair that people all flock to see, this one people drool over and tell you of their love. When you look at the quality condition of the dashboard, lots of room for fuel at 14 gallons (this Corvair comes with a full tank of gas), which in todays cost of fuel is a great added value. A full tank of gas to go where you want right away. And plenty more photos and details follow below, so keep your mouse handy and scroll on! We are not experts, but thorough and detailed, yet there still may be questions you have. Comments - Knobs, levers, headlamps, wipers, tail lights, radio, etc have been checked by Team Vehltor and are in proper working condition, no worries! (If we found something it is described below in red text.) Nothing can replace a visual personal inspection, but we try to be comprehensive. You are invited to have a company inspect it for you. Interior: Exceptional condition overall considering the age. While a vinyl material, squeezing the seats the feel of the seats reminded us the soft plush leather feel. The radio does not work. Please review the text description for details about condition of the interior at the time this ad was created. Make sure to see the 100+ photos in our Photo Gallery Exterior: Exceptionally clean. Gas cap door does not stay open by itself. Paint in good condition. Please review the text description for more details about condition of the exterior at the time this ad was created. Make sure to see the 100+ photos in the Photo Gallery, and the videos in the Video Gallery. Mechanically: See Vehltor Virtual Vehicle Video Tour to hear engine starting and accompany Team Vehltor on a road test, where you experience this vehicle out on the road. Runs, steers, brakes and rides really good as you can see in the videos. Gas gauge was working when the owner last filled up the Corvair, tank shows full. This Corvair is almost 50 years old, It would be good to check the fuel gauge when you first get it before you venture out on a long road trip to make sure it works. There is no way for us to check it. The Convertible top, even though power motor drives the top going both up and down, it needs a light lift in help at some points, but the top goes all the way up and down fine. Needs on the dash, the right signal arrow light is out. Nothing else known is needed. Please review the text description in this ad for other details at the time this ad was created. Make sure to see the many photos in photo gallery (click on Photo Gallery image located just below). From the owner: There are a few other mentionables. There is a very small ding on the edge of the drivers door and some evidence of rubbing on the edge of the fuel door. And a friend pouring over the car in detail noticed a minute amount of surface rust on the inside of the doors on the bottom. All of this is easily repaired. Anyway, I do not think it is so bad for a car of that period where the repainting is more than six years old. The front bumper shows bolt missing, tad of rust/aging. VEHLTOR TEAM TEST DRIVE COMMENTS: Well, take a look at the videos, photos, and ice creams enjoyed on a Friday night. It was like driving a step back in time for this Vehltor. What a memorable evening it was in every way. Drove out nice and smooth, accelerated well and braking was good, this drives likes you would expect a Corvair to.
