we have decided to reluctantly sell our 01 golf tdi. the car has many small issues and a few quirks, but it has been stone reliable and gets incredible fuel efficiency. we wish that we could keep it, but we need a new roof and have another vehicle, (a pickup i need for work) so this great car is being passed on to someone else. i will be 100% honest in describing all of the cars issues and also be very up front that the car is being sold as is. it is being listed locally as well as on ebay. the first person to pay is going to get a great deal on a wonderful car that has many many years left doing what it does best, getting you around in comfort and style while costing less that just about anything else on the road in terms of fuel. here are the facts: this is 2001 VW Golf TDI with 174,XXX miles. if your looking at this ad that you probably know that these engines will easily get 250k and often get 300k when well maintained! the exterior is a beautiful silver metallic and the interior is black cloth in great shape. we purchased this car on ebay about 2 years ago and it has really been a great car. on trips to maine it got 500 miles on a tank of gas and cruises at 75mph all day. it consistently gets 50-55 mpg!!! as far as we know, we are the second owners of this car. about a year and 10k miles ago we had the timing belt and water pump replaced by a vw specialist in our area. he also replaced a wheel bearing recently. the car has cosmetic issues that may turn some people away, but they are relatively minor and never bothered us. there is some rust forming on the edge of the left front wheel well. there is not rust anywhere else on the car and this could be easily fixed and filled by a body shop if wanted. the drivers door has a dented edge where someone tried to break into the car. they ran away when the alarm when off, but left the dent and cracked paint behind. the drivers mirror has some scratched paint. the rear bumper has some scratched paint from an extremely poor parking job one day. the windshield has 2 small chips that were professionally filled and do not effect inspection. the interior has some minor issues as well. the glove box opens and closes fine, but the door can become unhinged if opened too far. the drivers door handle broke off and was reattached with 2 screws. it works fine now. the biggest quirk with this vehicle is that the check engine light comes on from time to time. this started happening about 3 months ago. we brought it in and were told that the car has a bad mass airflow sensor and this is causing the problem. when the light comes on the car is going into what is called limp mode. this means that it is underpowered on hills. i did some research on this and apparently it is a common issue. we were told by the shop that is would be approx $500 to fix, but that it isn’t causing any damage and if we can live with the power issue from time to time, that its not a big deal. of course the check engine light can be a problem, but it goes on and off so it seems inspection wouldn’t be a big deal. we seriously considering getting the car fixed, but have decided that putting $500 into it when we really need money for a roof was a bad decision. we will leave it up to the next owner to decide when to fix it. the issue comes and goes with no rhyme or reason. it may happen a couple times in a week than be fine for a few weeks. for all the reasons above, this car will be a great deal for someone. tdi golfs are hard to find and go for very high prices. heres a completely reliable one with a few issues that can be had for great price. this car will give years of service, always start right up (even when its zero degrees out!) and be a pleasure to drive. i will gladly answer any questions you may have about the vehicle. seeing the car in person is highly encouraged, but i can not promise whether or not the check engine light will be on during an inspection. its got a full tank of gas right now!!! payment must be in cash or certified check. we have the clean title in hand. the price is firm for the time being. if it doesnt get interest at this price, i will lower it. i will gladly pick up out of town buyers at the train station, bus station, or airport. i would not hesitate to drive this car home no matter where you live! thanks for looking! --travis
