Vehicle Detail

1968 Firebird Custom build A video of the car is located here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG8IV5Vhn7cThe car is painted with high quality basecoat/clear coat. The color is Harley Davidson Black Cherry. This beauty is powered by a 5.7L LS1 / 4L60e 4spd automatic overdrive transmission and managed by an electronic Engine Control Module (ECM). The frame has not been cut and all mounts are custom aluminum. The LS1 had a documented 62,xxx miles at transplant and when bought, it had a 12/12 warrantee (now expired). The car has been driven less than 2,000 miles since restoration. Engine and transmission operate smoothly and without flaw. An On Board Diagnostics (OBD) port has been installed under the dash as it existed in the donor model enabling engine diagnostics to be read with your laptop or GM shop tool. (you could take it to your local GM dealer to have routine or diagnostic service performed, no greasy shade tree garages necessary). The dash is fitted with a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL or "check engine' light) and if there were ever a problem with the engine / transmission the car will let you know. The complete 43 year old front suspension has been replaced from the steering wheel to the ground (anyone who can drive a new car can drive this one). New steering wheel is attached to a custom chrome tilt column. Under the hood, the column meets a new Delco-Remy 12.7:1 quick ratio power steering box (2.5 turns, lock to lock), under the steering box are located brand new custom MOOG tie rod ends, idler arm and pitman arm. A heavy duty Hotchkis sway bar holds it steady and level. The suspension is Global West tubular control arms with QA chrome adjustable coil over springs/shocks. Stopping the car in front is a set of 11" drilled and slotted disk brakes powered by a 11" chrome power brake booster, those brakes are rolling behind a new set of Chip Foose 18" Nitrous chrome wheels. Under the hood, the engine remains stock (as 2001) with the exception of; a set of custom ceramic (chrome) long tube Hooker headers connected by a new exhaust system and X pipe to a pair of Flowmaster 40's. The car is a sleeper, with a low and quiet modern muscle car rumble but there is no doubt what you are dealing with once you wake it up with the accelerator. The car is a factory A/C car (removed), fitted with a "Vintage Air" A/C system (cleaner under the hood and keeps the dash stock), a Champion aluminum radiator and ECM controlled electric fan keep the engine at the proper temperature. I have driven the car in Florida summer afternoon rush hour traffic at 96 degrees outside temperature, windows up and A/C on, had to turn the A/C down because it had gotten too cool inside, the engine temp never moved above 190 degrees. There are custom braided transmission, front brake and fuel lines. The car has zero leaks/weeps (a pet peeve of mine). The exterior handles and locks have been shaved and are opened with a set of "Bearclaw" power door openers via remote fob(s). Up front the car is fitted with a full set of halogen H4 angel eyes headlights and has a chin spoiler. All lamp and lens assemblies are new, the rear lights are sequential LEDs by Spaghetti engineering. The rear wheels are tastefully staggered to ensure that enough meat is in contact with the ground should you desire it. The rear of the car is held up with a new set of factory air shocks. The front and rear mechanics are connected by a new, custom built aluminum driveshaft. The rear differential (2:78) with its factory drum brakes is retained and has been inspected / serviced and sports a new a chrome differential cover. With the combination of the 2:78 and the LS1, fuel mileage approaches 20 mpg, the car handles beautifully on the interstate at 75-85 mph. You can drive this one home, drive it to work everyday drive it however you would drive any late model car. Don't get lost in the crowd of new or even old Camaros, stand out in something unique and better. The trunk is upholstered and the new Optima red top battery is maintained inside a custom aluminum case tucked into the corner. 1/0 (+) and (-) cables are tucked underneath the car run the full length to under the hood where they complete the circuit with oversized and exaggerated connections. An auxiliary fuse/power block was located in the trunk to prevent overloading the electrical system with items such as the remote door openers, aftermarket A/C system, Stereo system, etc. Inside you will find a complete, new stock interior (the car is currently in the upholstery shop, the 3 year old seat covers are being retained), the windows have a new and mild tint and a custom remote trunk release button has been installed inside the console. Before assembly, on top of the floor pan and throughout the entire interior, trunk and doors, a "Second Skin" vibration damping system was installed. In the passenger compartment this system is covered by a 3/4" thick fire resistant foil faced insulation, on top of the insulation and in the doors was attached 1/2" thick neoprene rubber. A custom insulation was also placed in the roof under the new headliner, on the road, this car is as quiet, smooth and comfortable inside as some modern luxury automobiles (you can't change outside wind noise from the shape of the body). The noise/damping system was covered with a new "plush" factory fitted carpet and new door sills. The custom dash gauge cluster is a carbon fiber look and is fitted with Autometer "Ultra-Lite II" electronic gauges. Turn signal and high beam LED indicators have also been installed in the cluster. The stereo is a 240W "Retrosound" system (am/fm/MP3) with a remote and a power antenna. The stereo has plug and play capability to install a remote CD player (I use my Iphone/Itunes via the front Mp3 jack), there is a dual cone JVC 4 way speaker in the dash, two custom kick panel speakers and a pair of Rockford Fosgate "Punch" 3 ways in the rear deck. The restoration has taken the best part of two years and I have driven the car frequently to and from my job since completion (no I don't know how fast it is, I have never even turned the tires since completion. I have drove the car to a couple local car shows and folks always flock to see it, one question I always get is is it fast? My reply is always "I think so"). There are a few minor items that need attention since the break-in period: Power antenna is up and will not lower (does not affect stereo reception and new antenna included) The paint is 18 months old and looks and shines like new, however, if you were to scour the entire car you would probably find half a dozen pin head size nicks, perhaps a minor door ding and a few surface scratches, nothing serious or glaring but I know they are there. (I built the car, drove it and enjoyed it, the paint/bodywork is a 9.5). The car has never spent the night outside nor been in the rain. It stays covered while in the garage. I had installed a programmable radiator fan switch and never wired it (did not need it, but it's there and new), cruise control module not installed but column has been wired for it (column has modern factory cruise control stem and the complete cruise control system is included, a simple, less than an afternoon installation). The A/C baffles need to be removed and powdered coated (cosmetic as they look decent now) and a noise supressor needs to be placed on the stereo to prevent mild interference (background whine) with the A/C fan. It's all small beans and that's all I can think of that may be substandard with the car. The car runs and drives like new, I have over, a documented $47,000.00 dollars in the purchase, restoration and custom applications (not counting my time) in the car and I know I'll never get it back (I'll provide all documentation with/at sale). I love the car but (a real fortunate misfortune) I do have too many toys and not enough time and had to make my choice in what I was to give up. I'll take a loss before the restoration ages under the cover and all of my efforts go for nothing. I'll let it go at a steal, Fly in and drive it home. On Sep-03-11 at 08:07:30 PDT, seller added the following information: 1. The engine in the car was transplanted from a 2001 WS6 Trans Am. With the headers, this stock engine is producing approximately 340 RWHP. The stock 2001 corvette LS1 produced 350 RWHP. 2. The upholstery work is behind schedule due to the holiday weekend and will not be completed now until the 9th of September, therefore the car will not be available for shipping/pick up until the 10th of September.
