Vehicle Detail
Up for sale here is a '72 Chevrolet El Camino. She's a driver - NOT a show car by any stretch as you can see. Great platform for restoration, or just drive as is like I did for many years. You don't HAVE to restore them! Never driven in salt ever in it's nearly 40 year life - and it shows. CLEAR MA TITLE - READY TO DRIVE! For those who know these cars (trucks?), it has '71 front turn signals - that's why you thought it was a '71! But it's a '72. I bought this in Phoenix, AZ back in May, 2000. It's been to Nogales, Mexico, the Grand Canyon, & all around CA. I drove it up to CA, lived there 4 months, then towed a U-Haul with my motorcycle, tools, & everything else I owned at the time over 3,000 miles to MA in 2001. Was my only car from '00 - '03, then from '03-'07 it got taken out about 5 times a year tops. From '07 until present it has been parked.I just pulled it out of the barn on April 29th, cleaned it up, poured some gas in it & had it running & driving after installing a brand new starter & solenoid! I was amazed at how easily it started! I've been to hell & back with this car & it's never let me down!Unknown mileage - odometer never worked & I never bothered to fix it. Title says "actual mileage" though. 350 cubic inch V8, Edelbrock 1405 manual choke 600cfm carburetor, Edelbrock Performer EPS intake manifold, mild cam, TH350 tranny, rear end gears are about a 3.55 with an open differential (no posi). Engine fires right up hot or cold (a little cold-blooded below 50°), & has tons of torque! Hard not to light up the tires with any more than 1/4 pedal. Throttle response is better than anything built in the last 25+ years. Runs strong up to 4,500 rpm where the power starts trailing off. A great workhorse of a motor. Not set up for racing - just a driver. Won't set any records, but you don't want that for the street anyway. Ran it in the quarter many years ago & my best was a 15.8 @ 88 mph on a hot summer day with the timing not set right (pinging), & unable to get traction off the line. I found the original build sheet on top of the gas tank when I removed it for repairs way back when I first got it. It's in rough shape, but most of it is legible. Frame is SOLID - barely even surface rust on it. Only rot holes are behind each REAR wheel (driver side front is fine, pass. side front is lifting, but not rotted through that I can see), & directly underneath rear glass. Very minor considering it's age. Been garaged since '03. Floor is solid as well with minor rust under carpet that was wire wheeled & spray painted about 10 years ago. Has a 4-row radiator & a big transmission cooler - was all set up for the desert heat & handled it no problem. Parts replaced: Both upper & lower hinges on BOTH doors are NEW. Has a bench seat out of a Dodge Caravan with cup holders & arm rests ( original seat available ), Polygraphite control arm (both upper AND lower) & sway bar bushings, ball joints, tie-rod ends, brakes, wheel bearings, U-joints with driveshaft balancing, axle seals, pinion seal, front crank seal & most engine gaskets except the pan & rear main, recent windshield, custom bent 2.5" dual exhaust with Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers, American Racing alloy wheels with Dunlop G/T Qualifiers ( less than about 5K miles on the tires! ), has aftermarket under-dash A/C that works great! The compressor was totally rebuilt (an indestructible Sanden compressor) & a parallel flow condenser installed when I lived in Phoenix. Will freeze you out! Can see your breath if you lean over in front of it! Worked great in the 115° Phoenix heat! Also has a nice Sony tape deck that is CD ready. I have a 10 disc changer available for it as well. Plug & play - all wiring is in the car! Has air shocks in the rear to keep it level when you throw a heavy load in the back. This thing handles just as good, if not better than most modern cars. The Polygraphite bushings stiffened up the front end so there is nearly ZERO body roll in corners. Lots of fun! But it's not so stiff ride wise - the ride is BEAUTIFUL. Especially if you've been used to the tiny newer vehicles these days. Soaks up bumps big time - and we have lots of 'em here in MA! I've gone through the car from front to back - everything works. I fixed all the dim lights so they shine bright. Installed a washer fluid pump, & fixed the horn & E-brake so it would pass MA inspection when I got back from out west. The bad: Needs a battery - the one in the pics & video was thrown in just to run the cobwebs off. It's not the correct size or shape & is unsafe to run like that. Body is straight for the most part, however there are a few dents 'n' dings. Tailgate is the worst one. There are some rot holes in the body behind 2 of the wheels as mentioned earlier, & some rot under the rear window in the interior. Tailgate & bumper are bent inward about 1/4" after having a few too many out in AZ. Never fixed it. Mice have got into the headliner, but I vacuumed out the nest & let an Ozone Generator run in there for a week straight, so there is no nasty smell. That also kills any mold that may be present. There is a minor exhaust leak out the #8 header gasket area - easy fix. Motor & tranny have very small leaks around the pans. Never leaves a puddle - just weeping from age. Could use a power steering belt too. Passenger side mirror busted off pulling it out of the barn with ATV, but those were cheap aftermarket ones I bought at Checker Autoparts out in Phoenix. Weather stripping is mickey moused with Home Depot window foam tape, but keeps wind & rain out.Was a great daily driver for me for years. If I hadn't spent WAY too much money on an '07 Silverado, I'd just keep it. It's taking up valuable real estate in the barn, so it's time to part ways. PLEASE keep in mind that it's a nearly 40 year old vehicle & there MAY be a few things I neglected to mention. I've tried to be as honest as my memory will allow me to be. I don't anticipate many surprises with this one though. See my feedback & buy with confidence! I can deliver ANYWHERE on a open flatbed for $1.35 per loaded mile as measured by MAPQUEST.
