History : 4 yrs ago I traveled 400 miles to seal the deal on a dover white R60/2 in need of a total restoration. The owner of the /2 also had this 68 R60US that he insisted I check out as well. Being a long time airhead enthusiast and BMW guy I reasoned that I could enjoy the US while I did the restoration on the /2. I completed the /2 restoration and took both bikes to the BMWMOA National Rally in Johnson City TN in July 2009 where this original R60US received a score of 97.25 out of 100 for post war twins. I have ridden and enjoyed it 6K miles and barely ridden the /2. It is now time for someone else to enjoy this wonderful bike as I persue my next project. Service and maintenance: I replaced all fluids before riding to evaluate things. I then did a complete tune up, valve adjustment, petcock and carb service and generally check out everything to establish a base line. Since that initial service I have replaced all control cables, top end gaskets and push rod seals and pan gasket. I am a purist however I have respoked the wheels with stainless spokes. I have replaced the steering head bearings with tapered roller bearings as well as replaced the battery with a sealed lead acid battery and a new mag coil from Vech. The fork seals have been replaced and the forks properly lined up. I have resealed the final drive input as well as the two seals that can be done without disturbing the set of the ring gear and pinion. I replaced the steering lock and tool box lock because the prior owner had lost the key. I had the front fender bracket rechromed as well as the axle ends because they were a bit too tarnished. The rest of the chrome and most fasteners are original so the patina matches the overall condition of the bike. I have faithfully changed the oil every 1000 miles and the other fluids each season. This bike starts, runs , and rides like a good R60US should. All numbers match. Please enlarge the photos and check it out closely.
