Vehicle Detail
1979 Lincoln Continental Sedan with only 37,776 miles In short, this 1979 Lincoln Continental Sedan is in outstanding, near original condition, inside and out. There are three reasons for this : the very low mileage, the care taken by the original owner (1979-2004), and the meticulous maintenance and mild restoraton by the second owner.Safety Standards Certificate - Province of Ontario - Ministry of Transportation. The car was issued a Safety Standards Certificate on May 26, 2011. This certificate and the service records will be provided to the buyer. Oriiginal Owner For many years, this 1979 Lincoln was the "jewel of the fleet" of Murphy’s Funeral Home in the small town of Pembroke, Ontario. It was professionally detailed inside and out four times a year for 25 years, washed each time after use and stored indoors. (This according to the fleet manager with whom I spoke to get the history of the car.) It also underwent regular dealer maintenance and this should come as no surprise, since it would be unthinkable for mechanical failure to disrupt a service. The low mileage – an average of 1,250 miles per year – is owing to the shortness of the trips between the funeral home, local churches and cemeteries. This very limited use also explains why the entire interior shows virtually no wear at all. In addition to regular, routine maintenance, the fuel lines (front/rear) and the fuel tank were replaced in October 2002 at Murphy’s Ford in Pembroke, Ontario. The vehicle was traded in there on a new Lincoln Town Car. At that point the mileage had reached 31,567 miles (or 50,832 KM). Second Owner Since purchase in May 2004, I have driven just under 900 miles per year for pleasure bringing the mileage to 37,776 miles. The photo displaying the odometer (& speedometer) gives the distance travelled in kilometers, because the car, though made in the U.S., was destined for the Canadian market. The speedometer indicates the speed both in both miles and kilometers. The AC refrigerant was converted from R-12 to R-134 in the summer of 2009. I found no evidence that anyone ever smoked in the car. Mild Restoration i) Sub-bumber and rear isolators replaced The factory aluminum rear sub-bumber and isolators were replaced with an improved and corrosion-free steel replacement sub-bumper, in accordance with proper restoration standards. A word of thanks to Baker’s Auto, of Putnam, Connecticut, who supplied the steel reinforcement sub-bumper and rear isolators. ii) Minor corrosion : driver’s side lower fender I was keen to make this already almost perfect car just like new; I therefore saw to a complete repair and repaint of the lower part of the driver’s side fender. In addition, I found a bit of surface rust under the rubber gasket that skirts the trunk opening so I had the rust removed, the area repainted and the gasket re-installed. Finally, I also took the opportunity of the paint work to have the front area (up to the hood) repainted to repair some stone chips. Most Recent Service and Repairs On May 24, 2011 the following work was done : Rebuilt radiator installed Grease and oil change and spark plug wires replaced New ignition control module installed Note that the passenger-side rear-window does not go down the last inch or so. This may be a sign that the gear or electric motor needs replacing in the future. As part of a mechanical safety inspection, the following work was completed:Front brakes servicedRear brakes serviced, including replacing the rear brake cylinders and brake shoesWiper blade installed Professional Appraisals Mr. Robert C. Belier, a past President of the Antique Automobile Club of America, examined the car thoroughly in July 2004. A professional appraisal, it is made up of a narrative section, a 102-point assessment and a complete set of photos. Because the car has remained virtually the same over the past seven years (due to little use, proper maintenance and storage), Mr. Belier’s authoritative appraisal remains relevant and I quote from it : Vehicle in outstanding near original condition The exterior, the vinyl roof covering and the interior were in perfect condition The chrome and stainless steel trim was completely unblemished The car has been kept in immaculate condition and is consistent with the indicated mileage. A second professional appraisal was carried out at 36,115 miles by Mr. Marc Forget, President, Services d’Evaluations Duguay & Forget Inc., accredited by the Province of Quebec’s automobile department (La Societé d’Assurance Automobile du Quebec) to carry out automotive evaluations for provincial tax purposes. In his evaluation (written in French) he notes that the vehicle is in excellent condition, rust-free and has very low mileage. Both appraisals will be provided to the buyer. I will also include the repair records. This Lincoln remains as striking as when I bought it. As the poet John Keats wrote : "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." Recently retired, I have several vintage cars and the time has come to thin the herd. Enjoy your car search and best of luck.
