Most prefer the half ton with the 6 hole, drop center rims. Our truck is as described. It is a light duty unit with and exceptionally solid body and frame.. It hqs gross vehicle weight rating of only 4800 pounds and a curb weight of 3365 pounds.. Now, if we were forced to due the math, that sounds like a payload of 1435 pounds minus the weight of the passengers.. Not exactly heavy duty hauling, is it ? IT IS A 228 CUBIC INCH, SIX CYLINDER, OVERHEAD VALVE ENGINE AND IT IS THE VERY SAME COMPONENT WHICH LEFT THE GM FACTORY OVER 60 YEARS AGO ! ! IT HAS A HORSEPOWER RATING OF 90 HORSEPOWER AT 3400 RPM AND SOUNDS GREAT.. SOMETIMES KNOWN AS A "STOVEBOLT" SIX, THESE ENGINES DERIVED THEIR NICKNAME WHEN FIRST INTRODUCED TO GMC IN 1939.. THEY WERE CONSIDERED AN ENGINEERING MARVEL AND IT SURPRISED MANY TO LEARN THAT NEARLY ALL OF THE EXTERIOR ENGINE BOLTS COULD BE PURCHASED IN THE STOVE BOLT DEPARTMENT AT ANY SMALL TOWN HARDWARE STORE. ANOTHER PREFERENCE WITH OUR LITTLE TRUCK IS THE STANDARD 3 SPEED TRANSMISSION. THIS IS MUCH PREFERRED OVER THE FOUR SPEED TRANSMISSION WITH THE 'GRANNY' LOW'. THESE FOUR SPEEDS WERE VERY POPULAR WITH THE FARMERS REQUIRING A HEAVY DUTY TRUCK AND THEY HAD THE SHIFT LINKAGE ON THE FLOOR.. OUR 3 SPEED OFFERS A SHIFT LINKAGE THAT IS UP ON THE COLUMN AND OUT OF THE WAY... THREE PASSENGERS CAN SIT COMFORTABLY IN OUR TRUCK AND YOUR GIRLFRIEND WON'T ACCUSE YOU OF GROPING HER LEGS. THE THREE SPEED ALSO INDICATES THAT THIS TRUCK WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED AS A LIGHT DUTY HAULER.. IN OUR CASE, IT WAS PROBABLY TRANSPORTING GOOSE FEATHERS TO A PILLOW FACTORY. +++ORIGINAL INVOICE+++ AS EACH TRUCK PROGRESSED DOWN THE ASSEMBLY LINE A CRAYON TYPE MARKING WAS DISPLAYED ON THE FIREWALL, INDICATING THE DESIRED OPTIONS AND DRIVETRAIN. ON RARE OCCASIONS, THESE MARKING CONTINUE TO SURVIVE, EVEN AFTER DECADES OF USE.. THESE WAX SYMBOLS WERE WRITTEN PRIOR TO ENGINE INSTALLATION AND,FOR THAT REASON, ARE NOT EASILY DUPLICATED OR COUNTERFEITED..SUCH IS THE CASE WITH OUR '51.. FURTHER EVIDENCE OF THE TRUCK'S OVERALL CREDIBILITY IS THE ORIGINAL FACTORY NUMBERED KEY THAT WAS IN THE IGNITION AS THE TRUCK DROVE OFF OF THE ASSEMBLY LINE AND THE RATHER CRUDE ORIGINAL INVOICE.. YES-WE TOTALLY AGREE-- THE INVOICE IS NOT THAT NICE.. IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE DEALERSHIP NAME PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED..BUT, INBETWEEN THE MOUSE BITES, ONE CAN CLEARLY SEE THE PRICE, THE TRADE-IN VALUE AND, MOST IMPORTANT, THE ORIGINAL VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.. THESE FACTORS COMBINED WITH THE SOMEWHAT TATTERED ORIGINAL OWNERS MANUAL WILL BE GREAT ASSETS AT ANY SMALL TOWN DISPLAY AND WILL BE PERFECT FOR THE OWNER'S 'SHOW AND TELL' ! ! 12 VOLT POWER THOUGH NOT RESTORED, WE HAVE MADE SEVERAL IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR TRUCK IN LAST LAST FEW MONTHS... TO BEGIN WITH, WE HAVE CLEANED & REBUILT THE CARBURETOR.. THE ORIGINAL IGNITION SWITCH AND FOOT OPERATED KICK STARTER HAVE BEEN RETAINED AND ALL OF THE GAGES WORK CORRECTLY. OUR TIRED OLD SPEEDOMETER WAS BEYOND REPAIR SO WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW REPRODUCTION UNIT FROM CLASSIC PARTS IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.. THIS SPEEDOMETER LOOKS GREAT, FUNCTIONS PROPERLY AND IS GUARANTEED FOR ONE FULL YEAR.. THE ORIGINAL HORN ALSO WORKS CORRECTLY AND RETAINS USE OF THE ORIGINAL STEERING WHEEL HORN BUTTON. WE HAVE CONVERTED THE ELECTRICAL TO A FAST STARTING, 12 VOLT SYSTEM AND CHANGED ALL THE BULBS TO 12 VOLT, AS WELL. THEN, WE INSTALLED A NEWLY REBUILT 12 VOLT GENERATOR. OUR LITTLE TRUCK ALSO RECEIVED A FRESH TUNE UP, USING GENUINE DELCO PARTS FROM OUR GM PARTS DEPARTMENT. THIS TUNEUP INCLUDED NEW SPARK PLUGS, A NEW SET OF POINTS, A NEW CONDENSOR AND A NEW DISTRIBUTOR CAP & ROTOR. A NEW FUEL PUMP HAS ALSO BEEN INSTALLED. WE HAVE NOT FULLY RESTORED THE BODY OF OUR TRUCK AND THE PHOTOS WILL SHOW THE EXISTING MINOR DENTS AND DINGS.. WE HAVE, HOWEVER ,SANDBLASTED THE WHEELS, PRIMED THEM CORRECTLY AND ADDED THE FRESH BLUE/GREEN COLOR COAT THAT YOU SEE BEFORE YOU TODAY.. THE FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS ARE BOTH BRAND NEW REPRODUCTIONS AND THE FRONT FILLER PANEL (BETWEEN THE BUMPER AND THE GRILLE) IS ALSO NEW.. OUR OLD EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES WERE PITTED AND DULL, SO A BRAND NEW SET WAS PROCURED FROM OUR FRIENDS AT JIM CARTER'S.. WE ALSO REPLACED THE RUBBER DOOR-LOCK GASKETS. ANOTHER INDICATION OF OUR TRUCK'S OVERALL ORIGINAL CONDITION WOULD BE IN REGARD TO THE KEYS.. THE KEY THAT FITS THE IGNITION ALSO FITS THE DOOR LOCK AND BOTH WORK CORRECTLY.. ONE OF THE AREAS THAT ALWAYS SHOWS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF DETERIORATION IS THE FRONT BED PANEL, NEXT TO THE CAB..THIS IS QUITE TYPICAL, AS THIS IS WHERE LEAVES AND OTHER DEBRIS TEND TO COLLECT THROUGHOUT THE MANY YEARS OF SERVICE. WE FOUND THAT OURS DID NEED REPLACEMENT. JIM CARTER SUPPLIED US WITH THE CORRECT REPRODUCTION PANEL, ALONG WITH A NEW TAILGATE AS WELL. THEY ARE BOTH BRAND NEW, HEAVY GAUGE METAL AND LOOK GREAT ! ! THE NEW BED CHAINS ARE ZINC COATED AND THE RUBBER SILENCERS ARE ALSO BRAND NEW.. BRAND SPANKIN NEW TIRES ! THE WIDE WHITEWALL TIRES ARE BRAND NEW 600 X 16 INCH WIDE WHITEWALL TIRES..THESE ARE EXACT DUBLICATES TO THE OPTIONAL TIRES WHICH COULD BE PURCHASED ON THE VERY DATE THAT OUR TRUCK WAS PRODUCED BACK IN 1951 ! THE SPARE TIRE IS NOT NEW BUT HAS PLENTY OF TREAD AND IS MOUNTED CORRECTLY ON THE ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE CARRIER UNDER THE BED.. THE OLD BED WOOD HAS BEEN REMOVED AND REPLACED.. THIS WOOD IS OF THE TREATED VARIETY AND SHOULD LAST FOR YEARS IN THE FUTURE.. BOTH THE SERVICE BRAKES AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKES ARE IN GREAT OPERATING CONDITION, HOWEVER, THEY SHOULD BE CHECKED THOROUGHLY AFTER THE TRUCK HAS BEEN TRAILERED TO IT'S NEW HOME.. FURTHER, THE VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED TOTALLY SAFE UNTIL THEY ARE CHECKED BY YOUR MECHANIC.. THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED ITEM AND ON A 60 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, IT IS ALWAYS BEST TO MAKE VERY,VERY SURE ! WE HAVE ALSO PURCHASED AND INSTALLED A BRAND NEW SEAT COVER FROM OUR FRIENDS AT CLASSIC PARTS IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI. THIS IS MADE OUT OF THE CORRECT REPRODUCTION MATERIAL AND IS STITCHED AND SEAMED CORRECTLY. JIM CARTER RESTORATIONS SUPPLIED US WITH THE CORRECT DOOR PANEL MATERIAL AND A NEW HEADLINER WAS ALSO INSTALLED. THE CHOKE AND THROTTLE CABLES WORK CORRECTLY AND NUMEROUS OTHER NEW PARTS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED. WE ALSO WISH TO THANK OUR FRIEND JERRY RIVERS FROM JERRY'S ANTIQUE AUTO PARTS IN INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI. OUR OLD WINDSHIELD WAS STARTING TO DELAMINATE AROUND THE EDGES AND A FEW CRACKS HAD DEVELOPED, THEREFORE, TWO BRAND NEW WINDSHIELD PANELS WERE PROCURED AND HAVE BEEN CORRECTLY INSTALLED.. THIS ALSO NECESSITATED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FITTED RUBBER WINDSHIELD GASKET.. FURTHER EXAMINATION REVEALED THAT THE REAR GLASS WAS ALSO SHOWING WEAR. THIS HAS ALSO BEEN REPLACED, AGAIN, WITH A BRAND NEW GASKET. ---PLEASE CHECK THE SERIAL NUMBER--- ONE OF THE PRECAUTIONS THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN BY THE OLD TRUCK BUYER IS IN REGARDS TO THE SERIAL NUMBER.. IN THE EARLY 1940s AND 1950s, MANY STATES FOUGHT TENACIOUSLY TO THWART THE PROLIFIC MOTOR VEHICLE THIEVES.. LEGISLATORS IN SOME STATES DETERMINED THAT THE TRUE SERIAL NUMBER SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT WAS STAMPED ON THE ENGINE, RATHER THAN THE NUMBER THAT WAS STAMPED ON THE EASILY REMOVED DOOR PLATE ... THIS WORKED OUT FINE UNTIL THE OLD ENGINE WAS REPLACED AND THE SERIAL NUMBER BECAME DISCARDED.. NOW, YEARS LATER, THIS IS BECOMING AN INCREASINGLY SERIOUS PROBLEM, WITH TITLES TRANSFERRED THAT SHOW A SERIAL NUMBER THAT DOES NOT MATCH... PLEASE NOTICE THE TWO PICTURES REGARDING OUR OFFERING, AS WE HAVE ILLUSTRATED THAT OUR TITLE AND THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE ORIGINAL ENGINE MATCH PERFECTLY.. MANY CANNOT MAKE THIS CLAIM ! ! ! I'M SURE THAT SOMEONE COULD FIND SOME RUST SOMEWHERE... 100% COMPLETE ! !
