Vehicle Detail
1989 Mercury Cougar XR7 First, eBay lists this car with a manual transmission. This car has an automatic transmission. I've owned this car for the past 5 years and have worked hard to keep it in great running condition. I will list all aspects of the car, positive and negative. I've bought and sold several vehicles on eBay and understand that people want information that's as accurate as possible. Before the pros and cons, I'd like to say that this is an extremely rare car. Between 1989 and 1990, Mercury only built about 2000 of these supercharged XR7's. Although values aren't high, it's already considered a collector's find. Further, you will be hard pressed to find many of these cars in such a clean, rust-free state. The supercharged V6 has loads of torque and horsepower and will easily break the rear tires loose. In it's time, the Cougar and Thunderbird were considered some of the most advanced vehicles available to the average person. First, the postive. I've spent thousands and replaced many, many parts on this car. Last year, I put a new transmission in the car. The transmission has only about 3000 miles on it and works wonderfully. At the same time as the transmission, I had a new starter installed. I just had the Cougar in the shop 2 weeks ago and spent almost $1700 to get it ship shape. It has new brakes, new front end, new supercharger pulley, new plugs, wires, battery, pcv valve and fuel filter. The driver's side window motor and assembly are brand new. Last summer, I put 4 new Good Year Eagle GT tires on it and they now have a little over 3000 miles on them. The headlights are new as well as both catalytic converters (custom made by magnaflow) and intermediate muffler. Three years ago, I had this car painted, but it has since acquired some spots and scratches. There is absolutely no rust on this car anywhere. The only spot of rust ever found was under the passenger seat and was repaired last April. The shine overall is excellent. The windsheild and rear window gasket were replaced last summer. Last September, the speedometer needle broke and fell out of its socket. I've had this problem fixed and it works perfectly. Two years ago, I had the factory JBL subwoofer (trunk mounted) rebuilt and it works well. I also have the factory AM/FM cassette player as well as the separate factory CD player. This car is leak free and starts up everytime without hesitation. As I said, I've worked very hard to keep this car in tip-top shape. Second, the negative. The gas gauge does not work accurately. The problem has been diagnosed as the sending unit, so I have a brand new fuel pump/sending unit ready to be installed. This will be included with the car. The A/C operates but does not blow cold. The power passenger seat does not move back and forth. All other power controls for the seat work including lumbar and side bolsters. As I said, the pain is not perfect, but it is what I'd consider appropriate for a 22 year old car. The power antenna only moves up and down half way and you must move it the remaining distance by hand. The rear windows have tint on them that show small bubbles. I'd have the tint replaced if I weren't trying to sell it. This is an easy fix for the next owner. I'm very proud to offer this car for sale and welcome any questions you may have. Just send me a message and I'll send you an answer as quickly as I can.
