The engine is a non-turbo, and I believe it is the smallest diesel engine Mercedes sold in the US, which makes for phenomenal gas mileage. I actually got 40 MPG once going 80 mph almost the entire trip, even though the original window sticker says I should be getting 30mpg. I regularly get over 30mpg in the city as well. My car has been exceptionally well maintained, with a lot of recent work done including a new transmission, new motor mounts, suspension work, and routine maintenance. The car runs great, gets excellent gas mileage, and it even managed to start during the Chicago blizzard in subzero temperatures without using the engine heater. In addition to being rare for having a 2.2 liter engine the 1985 has some really cool features including the european headlights that do not have wipers but are extra bright. In 1986 the 190's headlights were changed in America to dimmer ones that look ugly. The car also has an engine heater, so if you travel to places with subzero temperatures you can plug the car in to keep the engine warm. This is a really fun, economical, safe car that has been very well taken care of. Mechanical maintenance The car is in excellent mechanical condition. The car has been very well maintained. Recently the transmission was replaced, along with the transmission gasket, tranmission filter, and the transmission fluid was flushed as well. The motor mounts were replaced to keep the engine vibration to a minimum. The suspension was serviced as well. The front struts were replaced, along with a ball joint and a linkage, then an alignment was done to make the car drive straight down the road. The rear tires were replaced maybe a year ago. I also had the seatbelt adjusted to work more smoothly, and I had the oil changed with the recommended 10w40 oil to keep the engine running in top shape. How it Runs The car runs great. It always starts right up, even in cold subzero temperatures. The engine idle is constant, no odd noises or anything. The engine runs smoothly, and it is incredibly efficient. A diesel mechanic told me that it is a very good sign that I'm able to get close to 40mpg gas mileage and the car starts when it is very cold. Indeed I have never had an engine problem with the car. Just change the oil at regular intervals and you're set. The transmission shifts very smoothly, with no jerking or anything. It tracks straight down the road, because the alignment is good and so is the suspension. It's a small car, but it handles bumps well and it handles very well. The brakes are also very good, and the parking brake works too. On the highway it is incredible. I always thought diesels were supposed to be incredibly slow, but the car is very good on the highway. It never heats up or overheats, even in city traffic, and overall its a great little car to drive around in. When you're getting 40mpg in a classy old mercedes it is a very nice feeling. Imperfections The car is in great shape, but it has a few imperfections that are not a big deal at all. The vacuum pump does not work, so the door locks and trunk are manual and not power. So it's like a normal car, also the horn does not work, the antenna does not go down all the way, and the turn signal has to be turned off manually not automatically. Like I said the imperfections are not a big deal, and in my opinion not worth fixing. What is important to me is the mechanical shape - the engine, transmission, and suspension and brakes. I made sure my mechanic inspected the car and it runs beautifully. Body The body is in good shape. The paint as you can see is shiny and glossy. The color is a metallic blue. The clearcoat, which is the clear layer that goes on top of the paint is peeling on the rear passenger side of the trunk as you can see. It looks a little discolored, but you really don't notice it that much. There is no rust on the car as far as I can see. The car looks very presentable, and it is very nice to look at. Mercedes did a great job of painting their cars, and its remarkable the paint looks so good after 26 or 27 years. Interior The interior is in good shape. All the gauges work, including the clock, oil pressure, gas gauge, temperature, rpm's. The radio and CD player work great. It's got an upgraded CD player with ipod connection through a 3.5mm plug so you can listen to your ipod which is nice. The MBTex leather interior is in great shape. Aside from some wear on the driver's side bolster from rubbing when getting in and out the leather looks very nice. The springs in the driver's seat are a little soft from the years of use, but I personally think it is comfortable. All the other seats are normal. The vinyl dashboard has some cracking from the sun. This is a characteristic and normal thing that happens over time, and once you are driving the car you don't notice it. All the window switches work, so does the sunroof, the heat, a/c I believe works but its been so cold I can't verify. Overall it is a very comfortable car, and the trunk is surprisingly massive for the size of the car. Overall this is a nice, rare little car that is very fun to drive, very good on gas, well made, safe, nice looking. It's been very well taken care of and I trust it will give the next owner years of trouble free driving. Just change the oil often and drive. These old diesels when well taken care of can last forever, and this one is no exception.
