Vehicle Detail
Please note, If the car is purchased using the Buy it Now I will include as a bonus a Mazda Factory new set of R&L door seals (not aftermarket) and a new set of 4 Falkin ZE-512 tires size 205/60/14 which is the correct size for this car. This is a auction for my 1985 Mazda RX7 GSL-SE daily driver. The car has a fuel injected 13B engine and 5 speed manual transmission. It is fully loaded with all power options offered in 1985 except power steering. The car also has the removable glass moon roof. I am also advertising this car locally and will cancel all bids and end the auction due to local sale or just deciding not to sell. You see I am really on the fence about selling this car as it has been my very reliable daily driver for the last year. I wanted to buy a new GSL-SE back in 1985 but just could not afford at that time. Instead I bought a used 1982 GS, after owning the 82 for a while I developed a passion for the 1st generation RX7's that is still alive and well today as I now own several, ok, actually I currently own six. I bought this GSL-SE last year with plans to make it my everyday driver and I did. Several of my cars are low mileage original condition cars that only get out on nice days. I wanted one to drive everyday and this one fit the bill perfectly at the time. This car is all original except for the aftermarket stereo with CD and antenna. Despite my best efforts, I don't know much about this cars history but here is what I do know. The previous owner here in Texas bought the car from a North Carolina auto dealer from only pictures and description for $4200 then paid to have it shipped. Upon arrival and inspection he was disappointed as the car would not Idle below 1500 rpm and had many undisclosed small items broken or missing. The deal was done and short of paying to ship it back for a refund he decided to keep it and make the best of it. Well he put about 800 miles on the car and the clutch started acting up and eventually the car would not start. Being frustrated from the start and with the addition of these new problems he put it up for sale. Not being one to pass up investigating just about every RX7 advertised nationwide, there was no way I was going to pass on checking out a local car in person, especially a 1985 GSL-SE which was the last year and most advanced version of the 1st generation RX7's. If you are not familiar with the GSL-SE options over the GSL version the main difference is the larger fuel injected 13B engine, 4.10 limited slip rear end and upgraded suspension. The car also has larger 4 wheel disc brakes and 14 inch wheels instead of the standard 13 inch on the GSL.. I bought the car and began work on making it a reliable daily driver. I found that the air induction hose was loose causing the high idle problem. I checked and adjusted as needed all engine sensors to book specs. Afterwards the car ran great and still does. The clutch pedal was stuck on the floor and turned out to be a bad clutch master cylinder, I replaced it with a rebuilt unit and the clutch is now in good working condition. Car starts easily hot or cold, even on the coldest days we have had this winter. Car also runs cool in the high Texas heat, just turn the key and drive, it does not get any better than that.. Other items replaced or repaired; Replaced spark plugs. Replaced both front brake calipers with overhauled assemblies and installed new pads. Replaced the left rear brake caliper with overhauled assy. The rh rear caliper appeared to have been recently installed and the rear pads were like new. Replaced both rear hatch gas struts with new. Replaced driveshaft with a good used assy as I found the rear u joint getting stiff and worn. Installed new rear speakers. Installed new battery. Replaced idler arm bushings with new. Installed rebuilt rear wiper motor. Drained rear end oil, checked for metal, none found and serviced with fresh 90wt oil. Installed real metal hinges on rear storage bin lids and center console door (don't know why Mazda elected to use plastic hinges) Replaced antenna with new aftermarket unit. I have replaced many other small items I found broken or missing, things like front strut covers, hood rubber bumpers, ignition coil wire and spark plug wiring looms, a bunch of light bulbs both inside and outside, replaced the panel light dimmer switch, adjusted both door power windows for smooth and normal operation (now you don't have to help them go up correctly). replaced missing hood prop rod and broken stow clip. Repaired loose shifter boot, another common problem with these cars. I think by now you get the idea, when I found something missing, broken or out of adjustment I fixed it. I have done a bunch more but are to numerous to list, what I can say is that if it is on the car it works, if it was supposed to be on the car and missing, it has been found and installed. I have even tested each idiot light system for proper operation, low fuel, low oil, low washer fluid, low coolant etc. I even removed the tail light bulbs to test the "Stop Lamp" out warning light. Just to clear up an area concerning rust. All these cars have rust somewhere, the important thing is where it is not. I always have to roll my eyes when I see a car advertised stating "NO RUST" You cant have a 26 year old car that is totally rust free unless it has just come out of a complete restoration. The areas of concern on the 1st gen rx7's is the front & rear wheel wells, the lower unibody framerails and the lower side of the doors and fenders. This car is clean in all these areas but I cant and will not state it is 100% rust free like most sellers do. Now the known bad items of interest. The paint is original and looks pretty good in the pictures as they always do but the clear coat on the top surfaces is thin and gone in spots as I hope you can see in the pictures. The car has a few dings here and there, most noticeably around the fuel tank door but nothing major or even close to major as far as dents are concerned. The car has chips and scratches, most notably a scratch on the left front fender and continuing onto the drivers door. The door seals are cracked and worn but surprisingly the car has very little wind noise. The voltmeter gauge needle will wag in concert with the turn signal but I found no fluxuation in the electrical bus, I replaced the meter and the signal flasher units but problem still exists, it does not affect any functions, just bugs me, most people probably wouldn't even notice it. The tires are getting old but they are a matched set & passed state inspection. The steering wheel has a occasional light squeak when turning caused by the horn contacts, it does not squeak all the time while turning, just in a certain spot, pulling the steering wheel and putting a bit of grease on the horn contact ring will fix. As you can tell I don't like things that don't work the way they are designed but this is so minor I decided to wait till some point in the future when I had the wheel off and fix then, sometimes you create more problems when trying to fix something and are better off leaving it alone. The radio surround bezel has a few cracks. I said earlier that I don't know the history of this car but if I were a betting man I would put money on the fact that the engine has either been rebuilt or had some work as it is a real strong runner. As you now know I have had many 1st gen rx7's and can say without a doubt that this is the strongest runner I have ever owned. For those of you that know about the 5th and 6th auxiliary intake ports and actuators on the 13B the answer is yes, they are not stuck and in perfect working order. The aftermarket stereo is a AM/FM/CD Pioneer Super Tuner III that really sounds good. The car has a 100 watt external power booster mounted under the passenger side rear storage compartment. The factory speaker balance joystick is not operational with the aftermarket radio. If you are still reading you must be interested so please ask me questions about anything I may have left out that you need to know. Also please remember that I may end the auction early due to local sale or deciding not to sell. I have no problem keeping this car. The only reason I am selling is I have decided that I would rather have a car with the smaller 12a engine & power steering for my daily driver. (actually I have already bought another 85 GSL with a 12a and p/s for my new daily driver) The 12a engine gets just a bit better mileage and now at age 51, I am no longer interested in high horsepower. The interior is in very nice condition. There are no rips, tears, cigarette burns, dash cracks etc. Seats do show some wear but I consider it to be minimal considering the mileage. If you are looking for a showroom condition car then this is not for you. If you want a great daily driver in well above average condition for 26 years old, everything working with no major surprises then you are at the right place but please remember this is a 26 year old car and something could fail at anytime so the car is being sold as is where is with no warranty. Just for fun and to provide some info to all 1st generation enthusiast, I have included a picture of my Red 1985 GSL that is my new daily driver. I have replaced all the suspension, brakes and wheels with the GSL-SE components. I am running a larger diameter tires size over stock by using 185-75-14 tires that give a bit better gas mileage. I have also installed a GSL-SE 5 speed transmission that increased my hiway mileage by another 2-3 mpg, the reason is the GSL-SE 5 speed has a higher 5th gear ratio than the standard GSL tranny, this lowered the engine rpm @ 70mph by about 500 resulting in the better hiway mileage. Just to be clear, my red car is not included in this auction. Just want to pass on some things I have learned to help everyone increase their fuel economy. Thanks for your interest and good luck! On Mar-20-11 at 20:06:58 PDT, seller added the following information: Something I forgot to state in the listing is I have recently replaced the speedometer cluster assy as a complete unit in a effort to repair the slight wag in the volt meter. It was easier to replace the entire cluster as opposed to the individual gauge. I searched for a good used cluster that was as close to the original mileage as poosible. The mileage on the car now is 137k plus, I still use the car and will till it sells. The replacement speedometer in the car now reads 132k miles. At the time of sell, if it sells, I will provide the new owner with the exact corrected mileage based on the reading at the time of sale. Thanks.
