MOST PREFER THE HALF TON WITH THE SHORT BOX AND THE 5 WINDOW CAB, WITH THE SMALL CURVED REAR WINDOWS. OUR 3 SPEED OFFERS A SHIFT LINKAGE THAT IS UP ON THE COLUMN AND OUT OF THE WAY... THREE PASSENGERS CAN SIT COMFORTABLY IN OUR TRUCK AND YOUR GIRLFRIEND WON'T ACCUSE YOU OF GROPING HER LEGS. THE THREE SPEED ALSO INDICATES THAT THIS TRUCK WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED AS A LIGHT DUTY HAULER.. IN OUR CASE, IT WAS PROBABLY TRANSPORTING GOOSE FEATHERS TO A PILLOW FACTORY. IT HAS A LIGHT GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING OF ONLY 4800 POUNDS AND A CURB WEIGHT OF 3100 POUNDS.. NOW, IF WE WERE FORCED TO DO THE MATH, THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PAYLOAD OF ONLY 1700 POUNDS MINUS THE WEIGHT OF THE PASSENGERS.. NOT EXACTLY HEAVY DUTY HAULING, IS IT? ACCORDING TO THE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER THAT IS FOUND IN THE LEFT DOOR JAM, OUR TRUCK WAS BUILT AT THE KANSAS CITY ASSEMBLY PLANT IN DECEMBER OF 1951. STOVE BOLT---SIX CYLINDER OUR LITTLE TRUCK IS POWERED BY AN UPGRADED 235 CUBIC INCH, SIX CYLINDER ENGINE WHICH HAS A RATING OF 115 HORSEPOWER AT 3600 RPM.. THESE ENGINES DERIVED THE STOVE BOLT NICKNAME WHEN THEY WERE FIRST INTRODUCED IN 1929.. THEY WERE CONSIDERED AN ENGINEERING MAVEL AND IT SUPRISED MANY TO LEARN THAT NEARLY ALL OF THE EXTERIOR ENGINE BOLTS COULD BE PURCHASED IN THE STOVE BOLT DEPARTMENT AT ANY SMALL TOWN HARDWARE STORE. AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE VIDEO, OUR LITTLE TRUCK RUNS EXCELLENT, SHIFTS THROUGH ALL OF ITS GEARS CORRECTLY AND ITS STEERING IS TIGHT AND TRUE. AN EXCEPTION TO THE ABOVE STATEMENT WOULD BE THE NEED OF A 3RD GEAR SYNCHRONIZER AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE. WE HAVE INSTALLED A BRAND NEW CLUTCH PLATE, PRESSURE PLATE AND THROWOUT BEARING AS WELL AS A TOTALLY NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM. ****12 VOLT POWER SUPPLY**** THOUGH NOT RESTORED WE HAVE MADE SEVERAL IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR TRUCK IN LAST LAST FEW MONTHS... WE HAVE CLEANED THE CARBURETOR AND INSTALLED A BRAND NEW GAS TANK AND SENDING UNIT.. THEN, TO MAKE VERY SURE THAT ALL OF THIS CLEAN FUEL REACHED THE ENGINE, WE ALSO INSTALLED A NEW DELCO FUEL PUMP..THE ORIGINAL IGNITION SWITCH AND FOOT OPERATED STARTER HAVE BEEN RETAINED AND ALL OF THE GAGES WORK CORRECTLY..THE IGNITION SWITCH AND DOOR LOCK ARE KEY MATCHED AND WORK CORRECTLY, INDICATING THAT BOTH LOCKS ARE ORIGINALS FROM THE FACTORY.. OUR TIRED OLD SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT IN ANY CONDITION TO RESTORE, SO WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW UNIT FROM CLASSIC PARTS OF KANSAS CITY.. NOT ONLY DOES IT WORK WONDERFULLY, IT IS ALSO GUARANTEED FOR ONE FULL YEAR. THE ORIGINAL HORN ALSO WORKS AND RETAINS USE OF THE ORIGINAL STEERING WHEEL HORN BUTTON ..ALSO, IN THE ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT, WE HAVE JUST INSTALLED A BRAND NEW 12 VOLT BATTERY AND OUR TRUCK IS EQUIPPED WITH THE CORRECT 12 VOLT ALTERNATOR WITH BUILT IN REGULATOR AS WELL. WE HAVE ALSO REPLACED ALL OF THE OLD 6 VOLTS LIGHT BULBS WITH THE CORRECT 12 VOLT REPLACEMENTS. OUR LITTLE TRUCK ALSO RECEIVED A FRESH TUNE UP, USING GENUINE DELCO PARTS FROM OUR GM PARTS DEPARTMENT. THIS TUNEUP INCLUDED NEW SPARK PLUGS, A NEW SET OF POINTS, A NEW CONDENSOR AND A NEW DISTRIBUTOR CAP & ROTOR. THE BODY OF THE TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN TOTALLY RESTORED AND DOES HAVE SOME SLIGHT IMPERFECTIONS.. THE WHEELS ARE 16 INCH FACTORY ORIGINALS WITH THE CORRECT HUBCAP CLIPS STILL IN PLACE.. WE HAVE SANDBLASTED EACH THOROUGHLY AND PRIMED THEM CORRECTLY..THEN WE PAINTED THEM TO THE FRESH GREEN COLOR THAT YOU SEE TODAY..TO THIS WE THEN INSTALLED THE CORRECT 1951 REPRODUCTION CHEVROLET HUBCAPS..ALSO NEWLY ADDED ARE THE NEW REPRODUCTION, CHROME FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS AND THE NEW FRONT HOOD BADGE. THE SWING DOWN, OUTSIDE CHROME DOOR HANDLES ARE BRAND NEW ALONG WITH THE LEFTHAND OUTSIDE REARVIEW MIRROR & ARM...THE FRONT FILLER PANEL, THAT FITS BETWEEN THE FRONT BUMPER AND GRILLE, HAD ALSO SUSTAINED DAMAGE AND WAS LIKEWISE REPLACED WITH A NEW METAL REPRODUCTION FROM JIM CARTERS OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI. BRAND SPANKIN' NEW TIRES ! THE WIDE WHITEWALL TIRES ARE BRAND NEW. THEY ARE THE CORRECT 600 x 16 INCH WIDE WHITEWALL TIRES. THESE ARE EXACT DUBLICATES TO THE OPTIONAL TIRES WHICH COULD BE PURCHASED ON THE VERY DATE THAT OUR TRUCK WAS PRODUCED BACK IN 1951 ! THE SPARE TIRE IS NOT NEW BUT HAS PLENTY OF TREAD AND IS MOUNTED CORRECTLY ON THE ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE CARRIER UNDER THE BED.. THE OLD BED WOOD HAS BEEN REMOVED AND REPLACED.. THIS WOOD IS OF THE TREATED VARIETY AND SHOULD LAST FOR YEARS IN THE FUTURE..ONE OF THE AREAS THAT NEARLY ALWAYS SHOWS RUST, IS THE FRONT BED PANEL.. THIS IS QUITE TYPICAL ON THESE TRUCKS AS THIS IS THE AREA WHERE LEAFS AND OTHER DEBRIS HAVE COLLECTED THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. WE FOUND THAT OURS DID NEED REPLACEMENT. WE ALSO PROCURED A NEW CORRECT 'CHEVROLET' RAISED LETTERED TAILGATE AT THE SAME TIME. BOTH ARE BRAND NEW, METAL REPRODUCTIONS AND LOOK GREAT! THE BRAKES ARE IN GOOD OPERATING CONDITION HOWEVER THEY SHOULD BE CHECKED THOROUGHLY FOLLOWING THE TRIP HOME AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED TOTALLY SAFE UNTIL CHECKED BY A QUALIFIED TECHNITIAN. WE HAVE ALSO PURCHASED AND INSTALLED A BRAND NEW SEAT COVER FROM OUR FRIENDS AT CLASSIC CHEVY IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI. THIS IS MADE OUT OF THE CORRECT REPRODUCTION MATERIAL AND IS STICHED AND SEAMED CORRECTLY. JIM CARTER RESTORATIONS SUPPLIED US WITH THE CORRECT DOOR PANEL MATERIAL. A NEW HEADLINER WAS ALSO INSTALLED AND WE HAVE REPAINTED THE DASH IN THE ORIGINAL "JIM CARTER" INTERIOR COLOR. NEW CHOKE AND THROTTLE CABLES AND NUMEROUS OTHER INCIDENTAL PARTS HAVE ALSO BEEN INSTALLED. WE ALSO WISH TO THANK OUR FRIEND JERRY RIVERS FROM JERRY'S ANTIQUE AUTO PARTS IN INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI. OUR OLD WINDSHIELD WAS STARTING TO DELAMINATE AROUND THE EDGES AND A FEW CRACKS HAD DEVELOPED, THEREFORE TWO BRAND NEW WINDSHIELD PANELS WERE PROCURED AND HAVE BEEN CORRECTLY INSTALLED.. THIS ALSO NECESSITATED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FITTED RUBBER WINDSHIELD GASKET.. FURTHER EXAMINATION REVEALED THAT THE REAR GLASS WAS ALSO SHOWING WEAR. THIS HAS ALSO BEEN REPLACED, AGAIN, WITH A NEW FITTED, RUBBER GASKET. OUR BODY SHOP CREW TOOK CARE OF THIS TASK AND JACK, TOM AND JIMMY MADE THE JOB LOOK EASY. OUR OLD WIPERS WERE MOVING EXCESSIVELY SLOW AFTER 60 YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE. THE WIPER MOTOR WAS SENT TO OUR FRIENDS AT FICKEN WIPER IN BABYLON, NEW YORK.. THIS SMALL VACUUM MOTOR WAS TOTALLY REBUILT, IT WORKS GREAT AND IS GUARANTEED TO WORK CORRECTLY FOR 3 FULL YEARS.. TO THIS WE ADDED 2 BRAND NEW, CORRECT, 6 INCH WIPER BLADES AND 2 NEW CHROME REPRODUCTION WIPER ARMS. THEY LOOK FANTASTIC AND OPERATE AS NEW. GENUINE FULTON VISOR DON'T LET THE BRIGHT SUN HIT IN YOUR EYES ! ! IT CAN'T, BECAUSE OUR TRUCK IS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH A GENUINE "FULTON" SUNSHADE FROM 1951.. IN THE PICTURES, ONE WILL SEE THE TRUCK PHOTOGRAPHED BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT THIS AFTERMARKET OPTION, THUS EVERYONE CAN CHOOSE THE LOOK THAT IS PREFERABLE TO THEM.
