Vehicle Detail

I came across this little gem in a barn. Had been stored there for years... I never got to meet the original owner he had a friend sell it so I don't really know the story on it. Here's what I can tell you. Evidently some years ago the cooling fan must have stopped working and the guy overheated it and ruined the cylinder head. Pushed in the barn. Over the years though he sold some parts off the car, nothing major, body parts etc. Not sure why. So it was a fixer upper for me. If you have a good eye you will notice that it has some CRX SI parts. Front and rear bumper, side panels and trim.. So it's got the sporty look of the SI wrapped up in an HF. Block is the original. This is very important as HONDA crankshaft bearings on these cars were not all the same size. They color coded the bearings. Each bearing can be a different size. You can't buy a "standard" set of replacement bearings for these cars. You can't get these bearings anymore. The reason these cars will go up to 300'000 miles is because of this. The size or tolerances of the bearings to crankshaft journals was that precise! Tight. No slop for premature bearing failure which is what generally happens to most other non Honda cars. I installed a brand new "re-manufactured" cylinder head. THE CYLINDER HEAD ON THIS CAR IS AN 8 VALVE NOT A 12. IT HAS "ROLLER TIPPED ROCKER ARMS" AS OPPOSED TO STANDARD. The valve cover is plastic. Important- that helps identify a true HF ENGINE from THE DX OR SI MODELS. It also has a brand new "re-manufactured" carburetor. Original Manual transmission. New upgraded front axle shafts/ boots. Brakes are 85% on the front- they are the upgraded discs and pads as well- meaning bigger than what it came with. Rear pads are good. Fresh and flushed brake fluid. Brakes overall - excellent. Cooling system is upgraded. These cars came with a tiny radiator like 2 ' x 2 ' .. I put the larger one in from the donor SI car so better cooling capacity. New radiator cap and thermostat- the recommended 170 degree temp one. With the new head it got a new water pump, timing belt etc. New starter. So engine wise this car runs just as it should for a Honda with 70'000 miles. Has original catalytic converter. Exhaust pipe has more welds than normal but it's all newer solid pipe. Has brand new muffler- But It might be worth it to spend a few dollars and get one originally recommended for this car. It doesn't sound bad, just has a little bit of a "rumble" or deeper tone to it. Tires are all brand new . Cooper Trendsetters. Original lightweight Hf rims. I found no rust on this car. All the floor-pans are in original rust free condition. Someone at some point had this under-body rubberized and managed to save what most of these cars end up having as a big problem. Even the carpet in the interior is in "EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION". New paint and clear coat. The clear coat is much more shiny than is showing up in the photo's??? It has a nice shine to it. The decals can be removed fairly easily if you don't like them. They were put on "After the clear-coat only a few days ago. The drivers fender had a little 2 inch crack that I attempted to fix but it didn't fix do well and so it's still there. Hood has a few little dings here and there. Not very noticeable. ------------- Interior. The seats were only fair so I upgraded them to in mint like condition Honda prelude seats. Very comfortable beautiful, clean and zero fabric tears. They are like new. I also put the SI door panels on this car which means much nicer panels with the "pockets" at the bottom for storage. Customized material to match the seats.. Take a look. I replaced the carpet in the back where the spare is. Carpet in car- Original excellent condition. The center console is unlike any you will find on these crx's and its really a comfortable armrest and storage box. I have the original silly little console if you want it. The emergency cable is connected and works perfect. Headline very very good shape, visors too. Brand new 200 watt stereo with 4 new good quality speakers. I built the little custom boxes in the back- have the original plastic inserts. If you did take those speakers out and put the inserts back in- there would be no screw holes that would be seen from the new boxes. We all know gas prices could go as high as $5.00 a gallon soon and depending on what happens in Egypt- even higher if the Suez canal becomes effected or shut down. So a car that is suppose to get 57 mpg might come in handy .. Any questions- fire away. And Thanks for looking. ------------------------------------------------------------- Great questions from George. Answers: Thanks George for the great questions. * I can't tell you actual gas mileage as this was just a winter project for me. I never licensed and insured the car. Just did local road tests and shop time -engine run time tests. About 20 (in my answer to George i mistyped and put 30- it's closer to 20, hard to say for sure though) hours of shop run time. I did everything by the book so it should get optimal mpg. *Clutch is original and functioning perfectly. *The re-manufactured head is from "National cylinder heads" and is an exact replacement of the originga HF motor. I've purchased many heads from them and they are great quality. *Transmission is 100% original same as the block and all the components there in. Meaning no one ever touched them. Same with the clutch. It works perfect. *silver/blue *YES THIS CAR HAS AIR CONDITIONING. HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO R-134A AND BLOWS COLD. I've added some pictures of the under-body and under the hood. The inside of the hood was never clear coated, just base coat. It has all the original stickers- and yes most importantly the sticker for the spaghetti vacuum line routing.. The under-body on this car is the best one I've seen out of 6 I restored over these past few years. This car also has the lowest mileage by far than the other 6 so it's expected.
