Vehicle Detail
Just like with most good builds you have to start with a good foundation. With this car I wanted to start with a rust free body. I searched for months and found this San Jose California built 68 Fastback. It still had the California black plates on it front and back and still registered and driven. It was a rust free, accident free California car!!!! That was the good news. The bad news was it was tired and had a replacement engine and a shot interior. It was a C code car (289 2bbl) but it had a 1972 302 in it. So I thought I won’t hurt the car by building a resto mod. In other words a car that still looks like an old fastback on the outside but has all new modern mechanicals. I tried to keep a Ford theme and use Ford parts where ever possible, so as to keep it easy to repair in the future. This car was stripped down to a bare shell, nothing left on the car could be possibly taken off. Then the bottom was sandblasted and painted base clear like the top was going to be. Rotisserie. No metal work was necessary as the car was rust free and had all its original floors, quarters, fenders, trunk, hood, etc . The only thing I had done was new door skins as the old doors had small sideswipe type dent running down door and it would be too much bondo for this type of quality build. Every part put back on the car was either new or completely reconditioned. This is basically a brand new modernized 1968 Fastback!! And let me repeat, this is NOT a resurrected rust bucket. The car has: Four wheel power disc brakes. Front discs are cross drilled with Cobra Calipers. Power Rack and pinion steering with tilt column (ididit) 5 speed Tremec TKO 600 trans with hydralic clutch. Air Conditioning by Classic auto air. Power windows by electric life. Computer controlled Fuel injection based on 1993 Mustang Mass Flo system. Front suspension is from a 2001 Mustang Cobra. Strut style with coil over shocks by Fat Man Fab. Rear suspension is four link by Heidts hot rod shop. 5 speed TKO 600 Transmission built by Tremec and supplied by Keisler (their perfect fit system) .64 overdrive, for low cruising RPM’s. 9” rear Positraction with 3.70 gears. Frame extenders/stiffeners. Here is the breakdown on all the systems. ENGINE: Mid Nineties roller block built by T and L engines (NASCAR Busch series engine supplier). It is a 347 stroker with aluminum Dart Pro 1 Heads, Air Gap intake, roller lifters and rockers, serpentine belt, chrome one wire 100 amp alternator, P/S pump, Chrome A/C compressor, Ford Racing valve covers. I’m not going to bore you with all the intricate details of the engine, its balanced and blueprinted and dynoed at 425HP. (dyno sheet furnished upon request). 1993 mustang computer controlled ignition and fuel injection, (A9L computer), Aluminum radiator. The electric fans and the a/c compressor are wired into the computer so when computer detects engine getting hot is turns on the fans. Or when the a/c is turned on it adjusts the idle and turns on fan. Like I said, all made to work like a modern car. After it was all assembled and broken in, I took the car to a expert Mustang tuner familiar with this type of system and we put the car on a dyno and tuned it, chipped it and extracted about 25 more horses. It now has 331 HP at the wheels. FUEL SYSTEM: Mass Air Fuel injection system by Mass-Flo.com. It has a large mass air meter under the air cleaner, four barrel throttle body, fuel rails, braided steel supply and return fuel lines with electric pump, Custom Fuel cell in trunk by Fuel Safe, all sensors and computer are Ford. Cobra Jet pop off fuel cap feeds right into the Fuel cell by Fuel Safe. (nascar approved) In case of accident there is a rubber bladder that holds fuel in and prevents spillage. Also preventing spillage is a flap and check ball inside tank in case of rollover. ELECTRICAL: Painless wiring harness with modern fuses. Gel Cell battery. Mini hi torque starter. INTERIOR: Done like a 1967 Shelby. Front and back seats upholstered to 1967 Deluxe standards, door panels are the deluxe brushed aluminum along with dash. Guages are Modern Autometer Pro comp ultra light gauges. Floor, roof, doors, inner wheelhouses were all covered in a dynamat type product for sound deadener. Center console is a Shelby reproduction console. It houses the power window switches and two gauges and between them is the check engine light. Lacarrera steering wheel, Hurst shift handle with white 5 speed knob. EXTERIOR: The paint is simply awesome. It is a base coat clear coat by House of Colors called Lapis Blue. It has been color sanded and buffed to a mirror finish. If looking at the pictures you see something it’s a refection of something and not a flaw or dent. Like I said above this car carries all its original sheet metal from the floors to the roof. Only thing replaced was the door skins. This is an all metal car not a redone rust bucket with a lot of add on fiberglass to look like an Eleanor. Look at the bottom pictures and you will see original spot welds, etc. The wheels are from a 2003 Mach 1. All exterior chrome is new. Chrome billet grille, chrome cobra style ext mirrors. Complete new vent window assemblies, windshield and back glass are new along with rubber and chrome trim. All new weather strips. Like I said earlier EVERYTHING is either new or completely refurbished. EXHAUST: 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent ceramic coated pipes all the way back. With an x pipe and stainless steel Magnaflow mufflers. See pics. BRAKES: Master Power brakes supplied the stainless lines, dual master cylinder, brake proportioning and distribution valve for four wheel disc. Custom rear stainless braided brake lines. Front brakes are off a 01 Cobra, rears are Ford discs. Even my painter who is a hard axx chevy camaro guy thinks this is the best, most rust free Mustang he has ever seen or worked on. He loves this car. I've spent the last three years building this car.
