Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 2004 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI sport utility vehicle finished in Offroad Gray with the Teak leather interior and Vavona wood trim. If you are already familiar with the Touareg in general and the V10 specifically, you may want to skip down to the pictures as the description that follows is rather long. If not, the following information will help you better understand the features and equipment it contains. The Touareg V10 is powered by a class leading 310 horsepower 5.0 liter twin turbo diesel V10 engine that set it apart from all other suv’s on the market then, and even now. Even more phenomenal is the engine’s enormous stump pulling torque output of 553 lb-ft at only 2,000 rpm! That’s enough to haul the Queen Mary out of the water and up the boat ramp. OK, not really, but it CAN tow a ¼ million pound airplane. The Touareg holds the world record for the heaviest load towed by a passenger car, pulling a Boeing 747. CLICK HERE to see the video. That amount of torque allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in the 6 seconds range which is quicker than just about any other suv out there, and is quicker than most sports sedans you will find. With its all-wheel drive traction, it can keep up with or even lead most any pure sports car like a Corvette, BMW M-class or Porsche in the stoplight drags, especially on a wet road. For those that say there is no such thing as too much power, there are chip tuning companies that can raise the V10’s horsepower rating to nearly 400 H.P. and the torque rating above 700 lb-ft! This V10 TDI engine has a forged steel crankshaft mounted in a 90 degree V cast iron block for maximum durability that all diesels are known for, topped off with overhead cam aluminum heads for light weight and improved heat dissipation. Two massive intercoolers mounted behind the front bumper feed cool air into variable vane Garrett twin-turbos to force-feed this beast. Bosch handles the fuel delivery with the latest technology Pumpe Duse (PD) direct injection fuel injectors that produce 30,000 psi pressure which not only contribute to the high power output but also allow great fuel economy. To eliminate any possible engine vibrations, a counter-rotating balance shaft is used so its no wonder that this engine has received numerous rave reviews by engineers and the automotive press for it’s high power output, excellent economy and inherent smoothness. In fact, the Touareg was named Car and Driver magazine's Best Luxury SUV, and Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year for 2004. The engine is mated to a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission with Sport mode and Tiptronic® manual control. This transmission has low first and second gears that provide brisk acceleration out of the gate, while the high top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and excellent fuel economy figures in the mid 20’s mpg in real world driving. In fact, at 55 mph the engine is loafing at only a little above idle at 1,350 rpm, and even at 70, it’s at a leisurely 1,750 rpm. It’s not until you hit 80 mph that it gets to 2,000 rpm which is right at the peak of the engine’s torque curve. If you have incredible self-control and can manage to keep the cruise control on 60 mph, you can actually get 30 mpg on a mostly flat highway. During more spirited driving sessions such as on twisting back roads, you can select Sport mode which keeps the engine in its powerband longer and delays upshifts for faster acceleration and initiates downshifts sooner for greater power. The transmission can learn and adapt to your driving style. In the Tiptronic manual setting, you move the selector lever from D to the right into the Tiptronic® position and can manually upshift and downshift by tapping the lever up and down. The driver information display in the dash always lets you know at all times which of the six gears you are in regardless of which mode or setting the transmission is in. This powertrain is backed up to Volkswagen’s 4XMOTION® Permanent all wheel drive system. This electronically controlled system sends power to the wheels that have the most grip depending on the available traction conditions. It can send up to 100 percent of engine torque to whichever axle needs it. Some of it’s features include a two-speed transfer case that allows you to haul the heaviest boat up the boat ramp or climb over rocks and logs on a steep trail at just above idle speed. An electronically locking center differential (EDL) to get you out of slippery situations. The optional rear differential lock for the ultimate in traction in the most demanding conditions allows the vehicle to keep moving as long as only one wheel has any grip. Complementing 4XMOTION® is Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) which is a sophisticated traction control system, and an Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP®) which enhances directional control with over/understeering of the vehicle being counteracted by applying brakes to the appropriate wheel to create a countervailing vehicle movement. If you accelerate too rapidly on an icy curve, ESP® can prevent you from spinning out into the ditch. ESP® can be switched off for those times when you intentionally want to have some fun. In conjunction with ESP®, Hill Descent Assist (HDA®) is automatically activated whenever you are driving down a slope that is steeper than 20 degrees. The vehicle will apply the brakes to individual wheels as needed to maintain speed and help stabilize it without the need for stepping on the brake pedal. Even more impressive is the Touareg’s climbing ability. It’s rated to climb up to a 45 degree gradiant angle with an aproach/departure angle in the highest suspension level of 33 degrees. Rounding out this Touareg’s sophisticated drivetrain is the optional air suspension. This allows the driver to select one of four ride height settings depending on road/trail conditions affecting ground clearance. The street level setting is the most common position and is used for all normal driving conditions. It’s speed dependant and provides 7.28 to 8.66 inches of ground clearance. At highway speeds the level will drop to the bottom of that range to reduce drag and improve fuel economy as well as increase stability. At speeds above 90 mph the vehicle is lowered by 1 inch and at speeds above 120 mph, by a further 0.39 inch. The load level setting is fixed at 6.29 inches of ground clearance and is used for loading and unloading the luggage compartment as well as in assisting passengers enter/exit the vehicle. The off-road level provides 9.44 inches of ground clearance and is recommended for off-road driving up to 45 mph. Above that speed the vehicle will return to the street level until speeds drop below 25 mph for 30 seconds. The highest level is X’tra level and provides nearly 12 inches of ground clearance. It’s used for climbing over rocks and logs, wading through water and for freeing the underbody of the vehicle if it gets stuck. The Touareg has triple-fold door and tailgate seals and is rated to drive through nearly two feet of calm water at this level. Maximum speed in X’tra level is 15 mph, above which, the vehicle will lower to the off-road level. The driver information display in the dash monitors the level of the vehicle. An air compressor and air tank next to the spare tire supply the system with air through pressurized accumulators. Together with the air suspension an electronic Continuous Damping Control (CDC) system lets you select soft, medium or hard suspension feel. The AUTO mode is the standard setting and gives a medium feel, The COMFORT mode gives a softer ride, while SPORT mode firms up the suspension for greater control and road feel. Damping will automatically be set harder at higher speeds regardless of the setting selected, and in SPORT mode, ground clearance is set to 7.67 inches. The styling of the new for 2004 Touareg is an evolution of that Volkswagen generation’s clean lines and sweeping curves while adding bold and aggressive elements to form a beautiful updated design. A quick walk around the truck reveals how the Touareg is one of the most powerful, sophisticated and stylish vehicles ever created in the luxury sport utility class of passenger vehicles. From up front, it’s large black cross-hatched inserts in the bumper openings hint at the two massive intercoolers residing within, Next, clear lens headlights seem to flow over the hood to a steeply raked windshield and into sweeping curves along the sides of the truck as they meld into muscular round wheel arches filled with wide low profile tires on beautiful large-spoke aluminum wheels. Clear blinker lights in the rear view mirrors add an upscale touch and composite rocker panel trim deflects rock chips. The rear stainless steel exhaust tips are set far apart and give the truck a stable wide-track appearance while the aluminum roof rack functions as a spoiler to give an illusion of speed suggesting this truck is ready to take off at any moment. It takes styling cues from some of the priciest German vehicles as well as creating some that are all it’s own. It’s chic Euro-styling that looks handsome from any angle without being flashy. If you like traditional craftsmanship combined with high tech design, the interior is a feast for the eyes. Get in and sit down in a 12 way power seat that adjusts to the perfect driving position with settings for lumbar support and recline, and the power tilt and telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel that feels perfect to grip. Notice the soft supple feel of the soft grain upholstery, take a deep breath and inhale the scent of aromatic leathers surrounding you. Now glance above you at the glass moonroof that gives you a view of the sky and lets in the light. Lastly, gaze over at the dashboard and center stack to admire the beautiful high polished genuine Vavona wood trim and how it integrates old-world craftsmanship with the latest large screen navigation display screen. Note the brushed aluminum accent trim and feel the precision of the soft-touch control switches throughout. Notice the polished chrome details around the gauges, shifter and switches. At nighttime admire the red glow of the back lighted switchgear and instruments that don’t compromise your night vision. You can see why one car magazine said, “The museum of modern art doesn‘t have a display as stylish as the inside of this car!” And this isn’t just some boutique truck, all show and no go. As the performance figures noted previously, it will keep up with most any sports car on the road, and run circles around most any truck off the road, yet won’t drain your wallet at the fuel pump. Brembo 6 piston front and 4 piston rear brake components Speed sensitive Servotronic variable assist rack-and-pinion steering And many more items too numerous to mention. Details of some of these features not previously mentioned in the introduction are described in the section that follows. And again, if you are familiar with the Touareg you may want to skip over this as it’s quite lengthy, but if you are not, it will provide a comprehensive though not all encompassing overview of what the vehicle is about. The Climatronic® dual-zone automatic climate control system has dual zones for driver and passenger so each can ride in the climate of their choice. If the driver likes it cooler, the passenger can still keep their side warmer by adjusting the control unit. A solar sensor, exterior temperature sensor and interior temperature sensors automatically adjust the comfort level to the desired setting. An activated charcoal air filter helps clean the interior air while a hazardous air sensor can close off the air intake vents from outside air flow when it senses excessive pollutants such as when going into a tunnel or following close behind a vehicle with a noxious exhaust. A residual heat setting (REST) lets you use the stored heat of the engine to continue warming the interior for up to a half hour after parking. Before exiting the vehicle, press the REST button and a pump continues to circulate hot water through the engine and heater core while the fan operates to keep the cabin warm. Go inside the grocery store on a cold day and when you return from shopping, the interior will still be as warm as when you left it. The vehicle is equipped with a Webasto diesel fueled auxiliary cabin heater but is deactivated on U.S. Touareg models. There are a few owners that were able to activate it by installing some European spec parts, details of which may be found on the internet. Mention of it here is just for informational purposes though. On European models so equipped, it can be programmed by a timer to warm up the cabin before you leave for work in the morning for example, or you can use a remote control to activate it a few minutes before you want to drive away. The Touareg has pre-installed trailer hitch installation provisions so if you want to tow, installing the hitch is just a bolt-on installation. And as you might expect, the tow rating of the V10 Touareg is just as impressive as the rest of the truck. At a maximum capacity of 7,716 pounds, the V10 Touareg hands down beats every mid-size suv in how much it can tow. The Universal Home Remote aka HomeLink® garage door/gate opener system eliminates the clutter of keeping up to three different remotes in the cabin. You can program two of the HomeLink buttons for your garage doors and the third for the front gate if you live in a gated community. Then just press the appropriate button in the overhead console to open. Electronic Parking Assistance uses ultrasonic sensors mounted in the bumpers to assist in both forward and reverse parking maneuvers by providing both an audible and visual alert when obstacles are getting closer. As you get closer to an object, the rate of beeping will increase and warning lights in the display units will show an increasing number of green, amber and red lights. The front display is on top of the dash while the rear one is visible through the rearview mirror. This feature can help prevent expensive and unsightly damage to bumpers as well as save lives by warning of pedestrians or small children in the driver’s blind spot. While a few luxury vehicles are equipped with rear Electronic Parking Assistance, the Touareg is just one of a very few that also have it on the front. One of the most useful accessories on the vehicle is the keyless access and keyless start system which lets you enter and start your truck without ever taking a key out of your pocket or purse. When you have the remote anywhere on your person, you can open a locked door or tailgate as easily as if it’s already unlocked. To start the truck you don’t need to fumble looking for your keys either, just step on the brake and press the start button. When you leave the truck just press the button on the outside door handle to lock it. You never have to feel around in your pocket or purse looking for the keys when it’s raining or you hands are full with packages. The 12-way power seats have a three person memory so you can program each persons favorite seat position, steering wheel position, seatbelt location and mirror setting and recall those settings with a touch of a button. A convenient entry function moves the steering wheel up and the seat down and back to make exiting and entering the vehicle easier. Power door locks can be programmed for numerous functions including automatically locking when you shift into drive, and automatically unlocking just the driver’s door or all the doors when you park. The power windows and sunroof have a one touch open and close feature so you don’t have to hold the switch continuously and the convenience opening and closing function lets you open or close everything at once from outside the vehicle. Great on a hot day when you want to open everything to let the hot air out before stepping inside. Dual forward and side facing sunvisors lets you position the visors both in the forward and side positions for maximum coverage on winding roads. The front door puddle lamps illuminate the pavement around the vehicle’s entrance in the dark so you can better see what you are stepping in. The independently opening rear window in the tailgate lets you place small objects into the cargo area without opening the tailgate or allow access to pets without the chance they will escape if the tailgate is opened. The power tailgate pull-in lock eliminates to need to slam the tailgate shut, just let it drop down to the latch and the lock pulls it closed. A large capacity 26.4 gallon fuel tank gives the V10 a theoretical range of over 800 miles per tank. The farthest I’ve dared go was 645 miles and then refilled with 22.9 gallons. With 3 ½ gallons left I certainly could have gone over 700 miles total with some left in reserve. A dual battery system provides a backup battery should the main battery get accidentally discharged. Both batteries are mounted in the interior of the vehicle away from the harsh under hood environment so they will last longer. There are remote under hood terminals for jump starts. Rain sensing windshield wipers automatically turn on and adjust the wiping rate to the intensity of the rainfall. No need to constantly fiddle with the intermittent setting in variable conditions. An electrochromic auto-dimming interior rearview mirror automatically reduces glare from vehicles behind you by darkening when bright headlights approach from behind. The turn signals have a one-touch lane change feature that activates for 3 flashes with just a touch. Battery rundown protection automatically shuts off inadvertently left on electrical consumers like map lights after about 20 minutes to prevent running down the battery, and Retained Accessory Power (RAP) lets you operate electrical accessories like the stereo, power windows or sunroof for up to 10 minutes after shutting off the ignition. It’s a one lady owner Florida truck (which is probably why it’s so clean). CLICK HERE to see the title. It has a clean and clear Carfax history. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax report I ran when I bought the truck. It has a beautiful dent-free body with a brilliant paint finish. Volkswagen’s recent paint technology produces the most wet looking finishes around. It looks absolutely dazzling in the sunlight, and sometimes you can’t resist touching it to see if it’s dry. The paint has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Synthetic Sealant for a high gloss shine. Even both the front and also the back sides of the wheels have been cleaned, polished and sealed to look terrific! How obsessed is that? Since it was probably mostly highway driven, it doesn’t even have a significant door ding, bumper nick or paint scratch to speak of. I had the front bumper cover removed, completely disassembled and painted because of stone chips. It’s an excellent job with no masking tape paint lines and the color match is perfect. The interior is also in great condition showing only minimal wear. The trunk looks like it was barely ever used and the engine compartment looks immaculate. Overall this truck is as clean as, and looks as nice as one with just 30,000 miles. Mechanically it runs and drives excellent. The engine pulls strong and feels silky smooth while idling, accelerating and throughout the cruising range and the transmission shifts are barely noticeable. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping, and the suspension is tight. The truck came with a matching set of four Maxxis tires size 255/55R18 that still have about 85% of their tread left. They combine exceptional all-season wet/dry traction, extended comfort, excellent handling and long tread life with a 360 treadwear rating and A traction and temperature ratings. Plus they have been balanced with coated adhesive mounted balance weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. The truck comes with all the books: All the navigation discs: And both factory remote keys: The truck has been fully serviced with over $6,000 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and service with original Volkswagen or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Some of these include: New Motul 5W-40 synthetic oil change New Volkswagen oil filter New Mann fuel fitlers Recent Volkswagen right air filter Recent Volkswagen left air filter New Bosch cabin air filter New AC Delco main battery New Volkswagen thermostat New Volkswagen G12 coolant flush and change New Brembo front brake rotors New Wagner ceramic front brake pads New Zimmermann rear brake rotors Recent rear brake pads Recent or excellent ATE parking brake shoes New parking brake adjustment New Valvoline Synthetic brake fluid flush and change New Viaco transmission filter New Viaco transmission pan gasket New Aisin Toyota Type VI transmission fluid change New Aisin Toyota Type VI transfer case fluid change New Mobil 1 Synthetic front axle fluid change New Mobil 1 Synthetic rear axle fluid change New Phillips HID Xenon headlight bulbs New Volkswagen Kessy module New Volkswagen tailgate lift supports New Volkswagen rear window lift supports New Volkswagen remote key New Panasonic battery for other remote key In addition to the above parts and service the truck comes with over $1,500 of new or recent tires and accessories including: Recent matching set of four Maxxis tires Volkswagen Keyless start system (retrofitted euro model accessory not available on U.S. models until 2007) Volkswagen Touareg logo sill plate trim Volkswagen stainless steel parking brake pedal (retrofitted euro model accessory not available on U.S. models) Photos of some of the parts replaced and service done: Oil change: Oil filter: Fuel filters: Right air filter: Left air filter: Cabin air filter: Main battery: Thermostat: Coolant change and flush: Front brake rotors: Front brake pads: Front brakes: Rear brake rotors: Rear brake pads: Parking brake shoes: Rear brakes: Brake fluid flush and change: Transmission filter and pan gasket set: Transmission with pan off, super clean inside: Transmission fluid change: Transfer case fluid change: Front axle fluid change: Rear axle fluid change: HID Xenon Headlight bulbs: Kessy Module: Rear tailgate and window lift supports: Speaking of servicing, compared to many other suv’s, the Touareg V10 is a low maintenance vehicle. Obviously it has no spark plugs or other ignition related maintenance items. It doesn’t use a timing belt like other vehicles that need periodic timing belt replacements. It has hydraulic valve lifters that never need adjusting unlike some cars that need regular valve adjustments. The transmission has a lifetime fluid although service intervals of 100,000 miles are prudent and coolant service intervals are 120,000 miles. So with all the recent servicing the truck has received, other than routine oil and filter changes, you shouldn’t need to perform any major maintenance service for another 100,000 miles. The sticker price new of this loaded 2004 Touareg V10 TDI was nearly $64,000. CLICK HERE to see the window sticker, but because it was a hard to get hot selling all new model for ‘04, most dealers were adding $2,000 to $3,000 in additional market adjustment markups (read rip off), so with tax, title and tag the original buyer of this Touareg wrote a check for over $70,000! 2004 is the first model year that Touaregs was sold here and they look nearly identical to 2010 models. That means you can own and drive a vehicle with the looks and prestige of a new 2010 model at a fraction of the cost. Of those ’04 models sold, only a very few came with the V10 engine, estimated to be under 1,000 vehicles. Another important thing to note is that due to emission regulations, there were no V10 TDI Touaregs sold as 2005 models. When the V10 did return in 2006, only 5 states could sell them initially, and it wasn’t until later in 2006 when the V10 was compliant with 50 states emissions with ultra-low sulfur diesel and a particulate filter. By then the sticker price had increased by $10,000! What this means is that the value of a 2004 V10 TDI will always be strong because there were so few of them sold, and the next alternative, a 2006 model, cost so much more new, that even a used one that’s identical to an ’04 will be priced $5,000 to $8,000 higher. So if you are serious about buying a super clean Touareg V10 TDI with all the desirable options that’s been fully serviced up and accessorized with over $7,000 worth of parts, service and accessories, and with a clean one Florida owner history, all at a reasonable price, then this truck is hard to beat. Sure, you may find one for a little less money but you get what you pay for. How much will you have to spend on it after you buy it? With this truck you won’t have to spend $1,500 on a major brake service, you won’t have to spend $1,200 on a new Kessy module (common issue on this model), you won’t have to spend $750 on a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $600 replacing the tailgate lift supports, you won’t have to spend $500 on a transmission and drivetrain fluid change service, you won’t have to spend $300 on fuel, air and cabin filter replacements and a synthetic oil change, you won’t have to spend $250 on a new remote key and programming if the other truck only comes with one single key. I bought this truck at a dealer auction in Florida two years ago during the winter when prices are traditionally lower and to use as one of my personal drivers. Now I’m passing on the savings in this auction. If instead of selling it back at a dealer auction I can sell it here on Ebay for a similar price and avoid dealer auction fees and transportation expenses, and the new owner gets the truck at a fair price, then both buyer and seller make out ahead. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes well below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk loosing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says, “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered. TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this vehicle may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. A down payment of $500 (plus any additional delivery charge) is required within 3 days of the close of the auction, balance due in cash or certified funds on delivery if I deliver it or you pick it up, or before it’s dropped off at the transporter if a shipping company is transporting it, but no later than 7 days after the close of the auction without prior agreement. I accept bank or certified checks, money orders, credit cards through PayPal (accepted for down payment only). If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle. The vehicle is sold as is. Buyer is welcome to inspect vehicle BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the vehicle to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this vehicle, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used car including squeaks, rattles, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description. Also remember that a vehicle is made up of thousands of mechanical parts and components and in an older or higher mileage used vehicle a part that is working fine now may go bad the next day, in a week, or a month from now. It’s nearly impossible to tell when a particular part or component will fail as most don’t exhibit prior symptoms, however, proper preventative maintenance as this truck has received, can prevent most problems or breakdowns from happening. In fairness to all bidders the reserve price will not be disclosed so please don’t even ask. Buyer responsible for transportation and vehicle must be paid for in full before it can be released.
