1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 Anniversary Edition This is an extremely clean, smooth operating example of the final year of the rear wheel drive Mercury Cougar (MN-12 platform). This Cougar has extremely low mileage for it's 14 year age. This is 1 of 2 Cougars that I have and is a vehicle that I've enjoyed greatly. I simply don't have room for it anymore. We live in a condo with parking for 2 vehicles, and we have 4! This Cougar has been parked in our driveway since September and is started once a week to keep the battery charged and make sure everything is still working as it should. Otherwise, I have not been driving the car regularly for some time. I've personally bought and sold several vehicles through Ebay over the past 4-5 years. Keeping this in mind, I have absolutely no hesitations in offering this vehicle for sale as a very solid, reliable vehicle for a buyer looking for a low mileage, older vehicle with good fuel mileage and several years of life left in it! In the past, I have purchased 1 or 2 vehicles that were listed less-than-honestly and which turned out to require major repairs. For this reason, I will do my absolute best to list both the positive AND negative about this Cougar. Please take note that this is a 14 year old car and is in no way perfect. It will however be a great vehicle for someone who needs an inexpensive, reliable second car, or who may possibly be looking for a vehicle for a teenage/college-age driver. Thank you for your interest in my Mercury Cougar XR7! First the positive. There are many more good aspects of this car than the negative, so I will cover the major details. The car has Ford's 3.8 litre V6 and has only 98,474 miles on it. Although this engine does not have as much power as the 4.6 litre V8 that was available, it easily achieves 22-24 mpg and is a smooth runner both in town and on the highway. Over the summer, a small leak developed in the water pump, so I replaced it with a new unit. At the same time, I had a service engine light checked and found that the ECM was not communicating properly; so a new computer as well as 2 speed sensors were installed. This Cougar has 4 BRAND NEW Winterforce snow tires on it. I've had several cars with these snow tires and they're wonderful in the snow. These are not studded, but do have the holes if you want to add metal studs. This is a 35th Anniversary edition Cougar, so it has the sport handling package with 16 inch wheels, special alloy/black wheels, sharper handling, quicker steering and 4 wheel vented disc brakes. This package also includes the very attractive deep burgundy paint and dual 12 way power leather bucket seats and tan interior as well as a factory rear spoiler. In my opinion, this is one of the most attractive Cougars made and was a major reason why I purchased the car. The car has a smooth-shifting 4 speed automatic, cold A/C and all power options. Another major positive is the stereo that I had installed. This car comes with a Sony bluetooth CD player with an auxilary input AND USB input for ipods and other mp3 players. This deck will operate your ipod directly through it's controls. There is also a separate remote for this stereo as well as 4 new installed Kenwood speakers. Together, this is a very crisp, clear stereo system that gives you several different choices of entertainment. The stereo is satellite and HD ready, but neither of these features is installed. Both power seats work as they should and are very comfortable. This car has keyless entry, an unused spare tire and very clean trunk. Overall, I think that with the photo's, you can see that this car is in overall very good, clean condition. Next, the negative. The biggest flaw on this car is the front passenger corner. A neighbor of ours backed into this corner of the car and lightly scraped the fender. Many people have commented that it's hard to notice, but I know it's there and that, of course, bothers me. It did crack the corner lamp, so I ordered a brand new one and installed it. The only remnant is the scuff on the paint (please refere to the photo). This car's exterior presents very well, but the paint is not perfect. There are a few minor scratches and scuffs that are usual with the age. Overall, there is no fading or lack of gloss to the paint. I only have 1 key for the car, but do have 2 operational remotes. The car will need new windshield wiper blades, especially if you live in a snowy climate. I've driven it in snow once and they quickly froze up. Since I don't drive it and have been planning to sell it, I simply decided not to worry about it. Finally, the dash light indicating that a door is ajar is always illuminated. Since I've owned the car, it has turned off only once and that was this summer one day after washing it. I cleaned the door jams with water and soap. I think that one of the door sensors just doesn't work properly. Both doors and the trunk close and lock properly. Below are the blue book values for this car without the anniversary package.
