Vehicle Detail

You are looking at a 1952 Packard 200, it has a 288 inline 8 with an automatic. This car was purchased by my grandfather in 2003. The car had been stored for 30 years at that time. The odometer reads 22082 and Grandpa was convinced that this was actual miles. There is a service sticker from 1964 that shows it to have 19450 miles. His intentions were to mechanically restore the car and make it his daily driver. My Grandfather was a Packard mechanic in the 40s and 50s; he owed 10 packards and was considered the local expert on Packards. I helped with most of the work on this car and have detailed it below, I am selling it because I own 2 other Packards that hold more sentimental value, and I have come to the realization that I just do not have the space or time for it. Hopefully someone will buy this car and finally put some miles on it. To start with we took the head off and cleaned and lubricated the cylinders and the valves making sure all the valves were working some were stuck. The head was cleaned, painted and reinstalled with a new head gasket from Max Merit. All the proper torque sequences were followed per my grandfather’s antique motor manuals. Oil change and grease job. The gas tank was removed and professionally cleaned sealed on the inside, and painted. New fuel line was installed were needed. New fuel pump was installed and the carburetor was rebuilt. The radiator was removed flushed, cleaned and painted. All new radiator hoses and heater hoses were installed. The points were filed and gaped. A new old stock coil and new plugs were installed. The brakes were completely redone, including: a new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes, and lines where needed. The drums were turned just enough to clean them up, and the wheel bearings were all repacked. The generator was rebuilt and the generator shop adjusted the voltage regulator at that time. My grandfather installed an auxiliary 12 volt starting system, he said that he installed lots of these in the 50s. There is a place for a 12 volt battery in the trunk, it has its own solenoid and there is a 12 volt push button under the dash, when used it sends 12 volts to the starter only. You do not need to use this to operate the car, and it could be removed very easily. Complete new exhaust system. Tubeless radial tires were put on; these were used but much better than the dry rotted bias ones that were on it. Upon driving the car we found that the tranny worked perfect with no leaks. My grandfather said that we would not touch the tranny, because the fluid that was used back then was much different (made from whale blubber) and modern fluid would result in damage unless the tranny was completely rebuilt with new seals and O rings. My grandfather passed away in 2006 and the car has sat in storage since. I got it out last month when I decided to sell it. I put in a new 6 volt battery, and new wiper blades. I have driven it 50 miles or so. It starts right up and drives good. I have noticed brake fluid on the inside of the front tires. The wheel cylinders must be leaking from sitting, but the brakes work good with lots of stopping power. The wipers are weak and the blower for the heater dose not work. The floors and trunk floor are all solid. All of the old undercoating is peeling off, but the metal under it is solid. There has been some body work done at some point (over 30 years ago) around the rear tires and along the rocker panels, this needs redone. The metal along where the trunk closes has some rust holes. I have taken pics of all the bad spots. The car needs body work and paint. The chrome needs redone. The seats and door panels need reupholstered. The floor mat and the headliner are in good shape. This would make a great car for someone who likes to do paint and body work, the machanial work for the most part is done. I would trust the car to make a long trip, but there is no way I would guarantee how far it would go. The car is 58 years old and is sold as is. Please ask questions before you bid. This is a no reserve auction. Payment in full within 7 days from close of auction.
