Vehicle Detail
1951 Packard Patrician 400. 327 Straight Eight, Ultramatic two speed automatic. Original Arizona car so it's 99.9% rust free and has been driven just over 57K miles. Never restored. It's a running, driving car but needs some TLC to be driven regularly. Drives very smoothly and brakes stop straight. Engine runs okay but has a lifter tick. Engine is a factory replacement installed in or around 1954. Engine is painted copper color like 54's and has a blank engine ID pad at the back, just like a factory service engine would. I haven't driven it much the last couple of years and really only twice around the neighborhood this year (had heart surgery and took a while to get my legs back under me). Definitely needs a little squirt of gas or starting fluid to start if it's been sitting a long while but otherwise starts fine. Water pump was replaced this year due to a bad bearing. Packard didn't offer power anything this year so even the top of the line "Senior" cars like this one used manual steering & brakes and didn't have A/C. This is a very clean restoration project. All stainless is either excellent original or NOS. The paint isn't as nice as it looks in the photos. Had one repaint about 30 years ago but it is checking and has numerous chip touch ups, etc. Still looks very nice, especially from 10-15 feet but should really be repainted. Body is very good and only has one 1/4" rust spot in front of the drivers side rear wheel well. I've crawled all over and under the car and can't find any more rust. The photos of the bottom of the car show Arizona dirt and some grease and scale but no rust. This car is rock solid, probably the cleanest sheet metal you will find on one of these. Driver's side front fender has a small dent above the stainless trim and another on the bottom where it rolls under the car. There is evidence of what looks like a so-so lead job to repair a small dent under the passenger front headlight and right behind the end of the rear bumper on the passenger side. Not bad, and for a car that should be repainted anyway really no big deal. I tried including pictures that show these areas. Seats and door panels were recovered at about the same time as the repaint from what I can tell. The job was probably okay at the time but wasn't done using correct colors and materials. The "new" upholstery was removed from the top of the passenger front door and the entire passenger rear door. Underneath was the original two tone brown, water damaged and very fragile (Arizona summers are pretty rough on rubber seals and interior fabrics) but will work to match colors. Looks like the entire interior was simply covered over. Original color combination was Turquoise Blue Light outside with two tone brown cloth inside. Additional info... - Hubcaps restored - polished and black/red areas repainted - Denman wide whites (including the spare) were new when I purchased the car five years ago and have less than 15 miles on them - Front brake shoes are new this year - Taillight lenses were replaced a few years ago with reproductions - New water pump last month - The license plates are believed to be original but are definitely correct Arizona 1950 plates(with '51 tags) and are currently registered to the car - New 6v battery a couple of months ago - Master cylinder rebuild kit included (normally brakes work fine, but occasionally pedal will sink to the floor) - Leaks engine oil and transmission oil, nothing horrible but drippy nonetheless- Lower quarter stainless spears and door spears are NOS and not installed- A dozen or so Steele Rubber Products reproduction grommets, body plugs, etc. included new in packages- Fuel pump heat shield and correct coil bracket included but not installed- All lights work, radio sort of works but is pretty crackly, gas gauge doesn't work- Chrome is thin on the bumpers but looks pretty good everywhere else (I'd say nice driver quality) stainless is nice- Title is clear- Three extra lifters included, two used, one supposedly NOS(looks like it too)- Probably could use a complete fluid change as it has been driven very little recently- Some de-lamination starting around the edges of some glass I'm pretty critical by nature so I'm trying to describe every flaw I can think of. All this being said though, this is a very nice car that would be excellent to restore. It's complete and in very good overall condition. I wish I could keep this car, but a job transfer and the need to downsize forces sale. Photos were all taken the same week, some inside the garage, some outside. Car would need to be picked up by Dec. 14th as storage after that time won't be possible. Please ask any questions before bidding. Winning bidder will send a $1,000 Paypal deposit within 24 hours of auction end. Balance payable in cash, cashiers check or personal check.
