In 1987, I purchased this 1973 VW Thing that had a recently rebuilt engine. Soon after that I had the car professionally painted. This same yellow paint is on the VW Thing today and has NEVER been touched up in any way. The yellow paint on this VW is not some freshly painted mess; it is a 20 year old quality paint job on a car that has not seen much use by me. I had this car out of storage about 3 months each summer to drive around town and in local parades with my young children.In 1998 it went into storage and now 12 years later I just got it out. We have enjoyed this VW very much, but we only added 5,390 miles to its odometer. Engine , clutch,and transmission operate just fine. I got new tires for one of my other cars and installed its tires on the Thing--tires now have good live rubber. I put new brake shoes and wheel cylinders on the front of the Thing. Back brake shoes are okay, but back brakes don't release right away. I think they will loosen up with use. I have a new master cylinder that I may or may not have installed by the time you buy the Thing. Also it needs a new hand brake cable.So mechanically, the brakes may need some attention. Drivers seat needs a new cover and there is a small repaired hole in the back rest of the rear seat behind the driver. Plexiglass side curtains are included,( see photos ), but there is a crack in each of the front 2. Underside of the floor board is rusty, but solid except for a hole under the battery.
