Vehicle Detail

Up for auction, we have a 1981 Mercedes 240D diesel. 2.4 litre 4 cylinder. 4 speed automatic transmission. 4 wheel disc brakes, sunroof, 4 doors, blue MB-Tex upholstery. Exterior is good shape with original paint. I would realistically rate it a 7 out of 10. There are a couple of minor rust spots (pictured) that are cosmetic only and can be easily fixed. This is a southern california car so has no structural rust whatsoever. The paint, while completely intact, is 29 years old and has hairline cracks in some places, but this is invisible from more than 5 feet away. There is only one dent in the body, in front of the drivers side door which is very shallow and hard to see except when you view in the right light. This vehicle has never been in an accident and the bumpers are original and have all trim intact. All windows are original and seals are in excellent condition with no leakage. Windows all crank up and down smoothly. Passenger side key lock mechanism is broken-- door latch works fine, but putting key in passenger side door lock will not make the lock plunger go up or down. I took it apart last year and discovered a plastic lever that the key actuates is broken and no longer connects it to the interior locking mechanism. Interior is also a 7 out of 10. Dashboard is in good shape except for some minor cracking which is expected for it's age. Seats are in good shape except for some cracking in drivers seat and a little deterioration on top of rear seats where it is exposed to sun. The back of the front seats has the "map pocket webbing" intact but needs to be shored up as it slipped down it's rails. Carpeting throughout is in excellent shape (9 out of 10). Seat springs are in perfect shape with no broken springs or other problems. Glove box light works. Interior lights work. Dashboard lights work except for the passenger side temp knob indicator light. Instrument cluster quartz analogue clock WORKS!!! and keeps perfect time. Gas gauge reads correctly until the last 1/4 tank at which point it becomes flaky. Other gauges work correctly. Engine is 9/10. Runs like a champ and starts up immediately even on cold mornings. Has good power and does not smoke. All parts are present and work well. Loses a little oil (rear main seal leaks a little bit) but otherwise shows no sign of oil seepage. No other fluid leaks. Valve adjustment last year showed no wear on lifters. Injector pump in excellent condition. 2/1 transmission valve on top of valve cover replaced last year and works perfectly. Vacuum system works perfectly and door locks all work happily and quickly. However, if not driven for more than 2 days, loses vacuum just enough for auto-locks to not work (but comes back to life 2 seconds after starting up). Engine has been very well maintained, getting frequent oil changes and fuel filter changes. All hoses and belts are in good condition. Starter replaced this summer. Battery under 2 years old. New air filter. Injector fuel return lines replaced recently and do not leak. AC compressor has leaky seals. I fixed up the AC system last summer replacing hosing seals, regulator valve, dryer, and compressor seals. It worked fantastically for a month, but found that the compressor had a persistent slow leak. I gave up, as it does not get hot here anyway. Heater and ventilation work perfectly and heater control valve was recently replaced. Heater core does not leak. Transmission is a 10 out of 10. Shifts quickly and precisely, and makes no noise. Was serviced 1 1/2 years ago with new fluid / filter. Vacuum regulator system was tuned up last year. Kicks down great when needed. Keep in mind this is a 29 year old vacuum actuated transmission and works differently than a modern electronic transmission. Rear CV axle boots need replacing, but CV joint is in good shape with no noise. Differential is in great shape and makes no noise. Steering control arm boots need replacing but joints are not loose. Sunroof works and does not leak, but is starting to need a little "help" opening and closing on colder days. Overall this is a solidly above average condition car considering it's age. It is capable of MANY more miles (the estimated life of a 240D engine is around 500k miles). Good luck bidding
