The last owner had it for 31 years. This is a special car as it was made only one year. In 1976 Porsche introduced this model as an interim till its new model was introduced. It was the first year of the Porsche galvanized body's starting the era of un-rusty cars. There were just over 2000 made. It has the original fuchs and five speed. The fuchs show as a factory option on the Certificate of Authenticity which I have and it shows a numbers matching car. See lots of photos of this car on my photo page here: http://web.mac.com/ricktick/ This car is a good lesson for us Porsche owners. I have a Porsche 911 6 years newer than this 912E with 1/3 the miles and it does not drive as tight and rattle free as this car. I’m guessing this car has never been hit, even in a minor way. It starts quickly and easily. Hot or cold. It stops well since brakes are recent. There is no play in the steering wheel, no funny suspension noises and it tracks perfectly straight down the road. The oil has 1,000 miles on it and looks like the day it was put in. This is due to a recent overhaul that is still strong. I spoke with the previous owner and he estimates the rebuild was done approx 30K miles ago. The oil cap is clean and shows no corrosion. This car is a living testament to 3,000 mile oil changes, fanatic maintenance, and no wrecks. The tires are not new but they have excellent tread. The shocks are still strong and doing what they are supposed to do. This is the only 912 that benefits from a galvanized body. You won’t find any hidden rust on the 1976 as on the early cars, and this car is no exception. Like many 911’s and 912’s of this vintage there is some rust just below the windshield. Other than this there is no rust to be found anywhere. The piece just below the windshield should be an easy fix and since it is a small body part matching paint is easy. Or paint it on the next time you pop the windshield for a crack. The car does not smoke on start-up or on revving. In the short time I’ve owned it, it has become one of very few “old shoe” cars I’ve owned. It feels right, drives brilliantly, and endears the driver to how well a fastidiously maintained Porsche can be, even with 180,000 miles on it. The paint has its flaws but still shows well and has good luster and shine as you can see. More important than the paint, all gaps are as perfect as the day it left the factory. The interior is good overall. It has one seam that has given up on the driver seat. About 3 or 4 inches long. You have to push on it to see it. The door boxes are really nice. I’ve attempted to photo the headlight buckets without removing and re-aiming the headlights. They are bone dry and have no rust. The spare tire well and battery box are the same. No rust or corrosion. The floors ditto. Dry and not even any surface rust. See photos. I have photographed the underneath of the car so you can see the rust free, dent free underbody. All fenders and wheel wells show as original, and show not even a hint of damage. I have taken a paint gauge to the car. You don’t dare do this to most old cars. Starting with the top and then from the left front fender backwards around the car I took a reading from 2-4 places on each body panel. It shows no bondo whatsoever and shows even thickness across all panels as a car should that has been repainted over no filler or body damage. This morning on the day that I’m writing this I drove to SF and back. About 240 miles. I traveled at an indicated 90 mph but I judge that I was going about 84 or 85. The temp gauge was pegged dead center on the green zone and never left area once it was warmed up. At an indicated 90 it is only turning 3800 RPM. There are some real bad 912E's out there that you will have to pay 8-10K for. The old saw about buying the best example available because it is cheaper in the medium and long run is very true. I have a two owner Porsche 912E. The last owner had it for 31 years. This is a special car as it was made only one year. In 1976 Porsche introduced this model as an interim till its new model was introduced. It was the first year of the Porsche galvanized body's starting the era of un-rusty cars. There were just over 2000 made. It has the original fuchs and five speed. The fuchs show as a factory option on the Certificate of Authenticity which I have and it shows a numbers matching car. This car is a good lesson for us Porsche owners. I have a Porsche 911 6 years newer than this 912E with 1/3 the miles and it does not drive as tight and rattle free as this car. I’m guessing this car has never been hit, even in a minor way. It starts quickly and easily. Hot or cold. It stops well since brakes are recent. There is no play in the steering wheel, no funny suspension noises and it tracks perfectly straight down the road. The oil has 1,000 miles on it and looks like the day it was put in. This is due to a recent overhaul that is still strong. I spoke with the previous owner and he estimates the rebuild was done approx 30K miles ago. The oil cap is clean and shows no corrosion. This car is a living testament to 3,000 mile oil changes, fanatic maintenance, and no wrecks. The tires are not new but they have excellent tread. The shocks are still strong and doing what they are supposed to do.
This is the only 912 that benefits from a galvanized body. You won’t find any hidden rust on the 1976 as on the early cars, and this car is no exception. Like many 911’s and 912’s of this vintage there is some rust just below the windshield. Other than this there is no rust to be found anywhere. The piece just below the windshield should be an easy fix and since it is a small body part matching paint is easy. Or paint it on the next time you pop the windshield for a crack. The car does not smoke on start-up or on revving. In the short time I’ve owned it, it has become one of very few “old shoe” cars I’ve owned. It feels right, drives brilliantly, and endears the driver to how well a fastidiously maintained Porsche can be, even with 180,000 miles on it. The paint has its flaws but still shows well and has good luster and shine as you can see. More important than the paint, all gaps are as perfect as the day it left the factory. The interior is good overall. It has one seam that has given up on the driver seat. About 3 or 4 inches long. You have to push on it to see it. The door boxes are really nice.
I’ve attempted to photo the headlight buckets without removing and re-aiming the headlights. They are bone dry and have no rust. The spare tire well and battery box are the same. No rust or corrosion. The floors ditto. Dry and not even any surface rust. See photos. I have photographed the underneath of the car so you can see the rust free, dent free underbody. All fenders and wheel wells show as original, and show not even a hint of damage. I have taken a paint gauge to the car. You don’t dare do this to most old cars. Starting with the top and then from the left front fender backwards around the car I took a reading from 2-4 places on each body panel. It shows no bondo whatsoever and shows even thickness across all panels as a car should that has been repainted over no filler or body damage.
This morning on the day that I’m writing this I drove to SF and back. About 240 miles. I traveled at an indicated 90 mph but I judge that I was going about 84 or 85. The temp gauge was pegged dead center on the green zone and never left area once it was warmed up. At an indicated 90 it is only turning 3800 RPM.
There are some real bad 912E's out there that you will have to pay 8-10K for. The old saw about buying the best example available because it is cheaper in the medium and long run is very true. I encourage you to have an inspection done and will help you accomplish this.

I am a nearly 70 year old retired dentist that got a dealers license for a hobby. I love cars, German cars in particular. I only do perhaps one car per month and usually will pick a very very clean German car from the leasing dept of the respective brand. I don't keep a lot or inventory so my overhead is as low as possible. Hence I buy at the wholesale auctions and can basically pass the car through to the public at or slightly above what they sell for at the wholesale auctions.
