Vehicle Detail

Nice old car!.Rare!- only 295 bucket seat Monterey convertibles were built in 1965! Narrow that number down to surviving cars, different colors and options and the numbers get smaller fast! Door tag: Body- 76G Color-5 Trim-M6 Date-17L DSO-42 Axle-1 Trans-4 Engine Y-390 2V Power steering ,Tilt wheel,AM radio. I bought this car in '85,changed color to red,did some mechanical work and have put about 70,000 miles on it myself. In '92 I sold it and found it again somewhat by accident in '96. It had another coat of red paint, the speedo had been replaced(shows 80 some thousand now) and original carpet had been replaced along with trans rebuilt. It has been in many weddings, parades car shows and much daily summer driving in my early years of ownership. I have had dozens of collector cars and this one is the only one I have owned twice. Unfortunately,I parked this one about 8 years ago had had never gotten back to it.Much work was done in the late 90's some of it was show quality detailing underhood and much mechanical. We even drove it to a National Mercury show in Indianapolis and did well there. It goes down the interstate like a dream. Storage problems include-old gas in tank, mice had gotten into glovebox and such. Ground squirrels packed exhaust full of nuts and nests. I rolled it out of shed, aired up the rotten tires some more-they hold air. Cleaned points and carb a bit and it started pretty easily. I ran it on a bottle of gas and then hooked tank back up and it is running okay yet . Put a couple fresh gallons in as tank gauge is not working. Lot drives good and will drive on trailer. Freeze plug or water jacket leaking behind pass side motormount. I had J-B welded a spot there years ago so that could be problem. Assume engine work, oil pressure good runs quiet. I cut a small hole in one muffler that would not unplug itself. Body-Nice solid body, has rust in lower rear quarters but other than home-made patching original quarters are still there. Door corners are getting thin. Some small spots by top rail trim by trunk(Typical).Front fenders are NOS FOMOCO replacements I found just before parking it. They have no holes drilled for trim yet. Overall body lines nice and straight. Floors are all there and solid, rear trunk floor and inner wheel tubs good yet too.I had dis assembled front sheet metal and cleaned and detailed all inner fenders, radiator support and hardware in '97 Doors and trunk and hood panels line up nice and work just like they should. These cars are overbuilt-you will not have frame flex and doors and such wiggling around such as other brands. Jack one front wheel 6" off ground and doors work like new yet. Try that on most older convertibles! Frame no typical frame rust or rot. No previous repair. Glass all good but one deep scratch about an inch long on one side glass, windshield new about '98. all weatherstrip original from fair to poor condition. Interior-Dash pad not cracked.Pretty deluxe tilt steering wheel, seats and door panels still original, drivers seat shows some wear. Carpet poor quality reproduction needs replacing. Top and Boot new in '98. Still looking good. Top system working with no signs of leakage in hydraulics. Engine and drivetrain- Engine was reworked, crank polished, new pistons, hardened valve seats, all new cam bearings, etc. Had J-B welded an external crack and that may be leakage now again. Assume engine work needed. Had a 4 barrell intake and carb installed for a while and switched back to original 2 V and carb. All engine systems and accessories new or rebuilt at that time and trans had been rebuilt previously. Detailed throughout engine bay. Driveshaft rebuilt, rear end gone through with new carrier, pinion, and axle bearings and seals.Complete brake job with all new top quality shoes, hydraulic components and hoses. Synthetic fluid in system, master cyl. still looks new inside with no moisture or corrosion present. Suspension still tight had rear coil springs replaced years ago. Drives nice ,tires very rotten but show how good alingment etc. was. Car has a nice profile with no sagging even with passengers in rear seat like many convertibles. Front end 75 per cent original with upper control arm bushings done when I bought car,one alignment and I think one tie rod replaced. Chrome- No rechoming anywhere, all original trim driver quality. One rear bumper extension smacked on side from parking lot mishap. Normal checking on outside door handles, etc. No bumper or bumper end rot front or back. Check pictures closely, assume work is needed such as gas tank cleaning, etc.Do yourself a favor and start with a quality candidate like this for your project. Ask questions freely.
