Vehicle Detail
Here we have a special car for sale. A 1972 BMW 2002 sunroof coupe, with rare automatic transmission and dealer installed AC. There are a few things that make this particular 2002 special. First off, this 2002 was purchased brand new for the mother of former NY Senator Al D'Amato, from Hassel BMW, when they were located in Island Park, NY. It has remained in the family until July of 2009, which is when we obtained it. Second, this 2002 is a legitimate 46K mile vehicle, making it very rare indeed. And as mentioned before, it features a rare automatic transmission and dealer installed (at the time of purchase when new) air conditioning. At some point, the family conducted a mild cosmetic restoration of the car, and it remains in fantastic condition throughout. This car gets more looks than almost anything else I've driven! Now, onto the car itself. Exterior: Beautiful paint, excellent chrome, factory BMW hubcaps, recent Michelin tires, excellent glass and lights. There is some pitting on the chrome, and a few marks on the leading edge of the roof which I have photographed. A ding or two, and maybe a light scratch here or there, but in overall outstanding condition. Please remember, this car is almost 40 years old now, and small imperfections should be expected. Take the time to carefully look over the photos, as I believe they speak for themselves. Interior: Factory automatic transmission, Blaupunkt radio, dealer installed Frigiking AC, hand crank sunroof. The interior is incredible for a car of this age, most of which is original with the exception of the seat covers and carpet. The dash is mostly crack free, although there is one long crack that I have photographed as well. Also, it appears to be missing a trim plate on the gear shift console, which is covered with black tape to simulate the correct look. I have not tried to obtain the piece, although I can't imagine it would be too difficult. The radio, all lights, turn signals and even the buzzers are fully functional, as well as, of course, the odometer. Drivetrain: Runs and drives beautifully! Goes down the road smoothly, transmission shifts great. To the best of my knowledge, the engine and transmission are original to this car as well, and have never been apart. The air cleaner is aftermarket (we do not have the original), but otherwise the car is stock. Starts and goes without fail, even after sitting for some time. Again, please consider this is car is almost 40 years old, and as such, certain imperfections should be expected. This is by no means a show car, but honestly, it's really not far off. It is much more than just a presentable driver; it really is a gorgeous car, which the pictures will most certainly show. We have the original owners manual, service booklet, Blaupunkt booklet, Frigiking documents, and the original bill of sale showing D'Amato as the purchaser, along with the last current registration which was in the family name. If your looking for that special 2002 to add to your collection, or just a fun weekend car, look no further. You will be hard pressed to find a better example, in this condition, with these options, the low mileage (46k!) and the fact that only 1 family has owned it since new. These cars are extremely difficult to find like this!! If your in the area and would like to see the car in person, please feel free to contact me to set up an appointment. I will be as accomodating as possible. If there is anything I missed, or something else you would like to know, contact with any and all questions you may have. Thank you for looking, and good luck!!
