1962 Mercury Monterey Custom – NO RESERVE I reluctantly must sell this rust free Wyoming/Colorado car which I have had professionally restored to show quality during the past 3 years. I will personally drive it to the front door of the new owner in the lower 48, if you wish. ENGINE – Numbers matching Mercury S-55 300 horse 390 cubic inch high performance V-8, with less than 3,000 miles on a professional rebuild. This is the best running 390 I have ever owned. The carburetor is a NEW Edelbrock 600 cfm with the correct manual choke. The starter motor is NEW. The battery is NEW. The power steering hoses are NEW. There are no leaks of any kind (gas, coolant, oil, power steering, power brake). The engine compartment has not been restored and shows as original. The factory dual exhaust is NEW and complete with the crossover “H” pipe which was meant to equalize back pressure on these high performance engines. The mufflers are NEW glass packs and the chrome exhaust tips are NEW. When you hammer the gas pedal in low gear, the exhaust note sounds not unlike what I would expect to hear from that of a machine gun! Otherwise, the engine idles so quietly, you can’t hear it running from inside the car with the windows down. It never has overheated and the gauge consistently reads on the cold side of normal. It uses regular unleaded. If you want to be environmentally correct, you can tell your friends that this is a HYBRID 390. It’ll burn both gas and rubber!! haha TRANSMISSION – Correct optional 3-speed Multi-drive automatic, with less than 3,000 miles on a professional rebuild. This transmission features shift positions of “Low”, “D1” and “D2”. From a dead stop, in the D2 shift position, the car starts off in 2nd gear and then shifts to 3rd. In the D1 position, the car starts off in Low, then shifts to 2nd and then to 3rd. The transmission shifts smoothly and firmly with no slipping and no leaks. BRAKES - NEW shoes, turned drums. Car stops straight and firmly with no slop in the pedal. EXTERIOR – NEW 2-tone ruby red metallic/pearl white mirror finished paint. NEW chromed rear bumper (front bumper didn’t need refinishing). NEW outside rear view mirrors. All stainless trim in excellent shape. All pot metal in excellent shape with no pitting at all. 4 NEW chrome smoothie 14” wheels and 4 NEW tires with less than 500 miles, less than 1% tread wear All glass is in excellent shape. NEW antenna. NEW back up lites. TRUNK – The trunk has been professionally relined with the correct NEW vinyl pattern. The jack accessories are all in place. The spare tire is NEW and matches the other 4 on the ground. The spare wheel is a NEW chrome smoothie that matches the other 4 on the ground. INTERIOR – When I bought this car 3 years ago, the ENTIRE interior (except the headliner) was covered with clear heavy plastic, which had long since turned yellow and brittle. As I removed it, what appeared underneath was a BRAND NEW 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom interior that had been installed when the car was new!! It was a little dirty but showed no appreciable wear. I removed all but the plastic up against the fire wall behind the brake and gas pedals, and which extends to the right of the accelerator and up onto the transmission hump. The original carpeting looks NEW. The seat material looks almost new, the door panels look almost new and the front kick panels look the same! ROADWORTHINESS – I am not a mechanic. I have to pay other people to keep my cars in such good condition that I can go on trips without worrying about being stranded. In my opinion, this Merc is 100% roadworthy.
