Vehicle Detail

For Sale 1968 Porsche 912 Coupe Car runs GREAT!!! Car drives and handles GREAT!!! Clear title. Current registration. My [twin] brother and I have had the car back and forth between us for almost 5 years. It's NOT from Minnesota - so no worries about old rust. The car came to us from very southern Illinois and has only been in MN since Fall 2009, when I drove it up here in October for some instrument repairs. Car has ALWAYS been kept in garage and regularly started and run all through the wintertime storage. After two years of nice weather driving we both wanted to attend Porsche Club of America Drivers Training. (we have two of these cars) So three summers ago we had engine out. Old Porsches need oil seals replaced, and the air cooling housing cleaned... we grew up doing this with VW and Porsche air cooled (really oil-cooled) engines so took a weekend to do this right. We replaced the oil filter and all lines. Replace oil cooler and cooler seals. Car had original Solex dual carbs and air cleaners. They STILL run SO well we have left them. I am serious about this - you have to listen to this understand how well they run. There are three distributors commonly used on 912 engines. This is the MOST desirable one with the more aggressive advance and most bullet-proof insides. You will see and feel this. I only wish I had this on my 1969 Porsche 912, but they are impossible to find. Car has original Porsche 4 speed manual transmission. Owner before us replaced clutch - its feels tight and is in great shape. Car had original Talbot racing mirrors mounted on wings. Original Durant mirror holes plugged. Extendable radio antenna works as it should and is in great shape. We purchased and installed brand new Purlon trunk carpet this past spring. Door handles work correctly inside and out. Chrome is great shape, all the way around the car. Vent windows work correctly and seal up tight. Doors shut solid and seal tight they way they should. We installed brand new vintage NOS 12-fuse Porsche fuse box this spring - zero corrosion, new fuses. Also install new Porsche passenger foot board (see in pictures) and will have brand new pedal board from Stoddard before car ships. It hasnt arrived yet, and dont want to send old one. We took entire pedal cluster apart this spring and refinished and replaced all OEM nylon bushings with bronze self-lubricating ones from ZIMs. Clutch, brake, and gas pedals all perfect feel and function. Replace rear cab shift linkage and bushings, and replaced inspection cover with clear ABS one. Last fall (2009) we replaced generator with brand new one, replaced voltage regulator with new one, and replaced battery. We made sure all gauges worked, including the CLOCK - VDO clock works, and keep accurate time!!! Since we wanted a '911R' look we removed what was left of the original carpet, and refinished interior in the same hard bedliner coating the R's had - with rubber mats instead of carpet. The headline was immaculate so it stayed. Both front seats were original and gorgeous... seriously. For original equipment they are in amazing near-flawless condition. But for track we replaced the drivers seat with a $900 Italian Vintage reproduction of a Monte Carlo fully adjustable racing seat. This makes driving the car much much more enjoyable. The passenger seat remained original. If the Buy It Now price is met, the original drivers seat goes with the car. It is in nearly exact same condition as the passenger seat. The interior door panels are gorgeous.. nearly flawless - see the pictures. No rust or damage under doors or in or around door posts or hinges. All great. We installed a MOMO Prototipo vintage racing steering wheel. Its goegous and really provides great road-feedback. We installed new H4 headlamps and glass. Gives car that vintage euro-look, not more lame american look. Makes for replaceable bulbs instead of whole sealbeam, and provides MUCH more and better-directed light to road. Wipers work like they should, both speeds, and washer works as it should. Hazards, stop lamps, turn signals, horn, courtesy lights, and backup lights all work like they should. The exhaust had been replaced by previous owner, and is a 5 year old tuned exhaust - not loud, still street legal but with a nice rumble. The car's body shows no rust or damage. It was sealed and rust proofed by some previous owner who did a great job. We have maintained this using Zeibart. The photos should show - body, bottom, fender, panels, roof, doors - all in great shape. Minor rust flaking under some paint - but look closely so you understand how minor this is. The windows all work as they should, front and rear. The front windshield took a rock hit during first drivers training, and damaged the rear view mirror and required front windshield replaced. Front is all new glass with new seal. We had the same professionals replace seal in rear window as well, and we installed top of the line engine bay sound dampener and Dynomat all through rear of interior of car. You can see this in the photos - though it is covered with black liner to protect it. Three summers ago we replaced the radio with new Blaupunkt Stereo/CD player with brand new removeable 6"x9" speakers and housings in the rear. The rear seats are all there, in good shape, but with vinyl backs and strange houndstooth original Porsche seat cushions. Original seat belts are there for both front seats. The wheels are special. We looked high and low for 1972 Porsche snowflake wheels. We wanted the 911R set up with 7"x15" in rear and 6"x15" in front. We found a perfect set, and had them powder coated in metal flake grey - so they would last under any conditions. They have 225/60-15 Kumho's in rear and 205/60/15 Kumho's in front. We tuned the suspension to match these and the car handles like a roller skate on rails.... amazing turning and stopping. Car has full front and rear disc brakes. We replaced the master cylinder three summers ago before ever taking to the race track. Car has been tested under strenuous conditions and proven strong and dependable. If you are not familiar with PCA Drivers and Race Training - the PCA requires that you have your car professionally inspected and certified before you ever get paired up with an instructor and do a single lap on the track. The PCA standards are the highest and require flawless engine operation, braking, tires, suspension, and electricals - so the fact that we took this to the track for two summers should make you confident the car has been well-maintained, not abused. The PCA approval backs that up. I have videos on YouTube.com.. go see them. Search for "Mikes 1968 Porsche 912R" and you should find them. I will be posting several all nite and all week. They show the car running, driving, inside, outside, front side, back side. I tried to capture everything. I have posted 24 high resolution digital pics on eBay - look at them. I get lots LOTS of compliments on the color and paint, but in truth, its taken chips since it was done and its not flawless. But chips are only through red paint, and not through primer or into metal. Theres one small roughed out dent on the rear drivers wheel arch (before we got the car, but no rust), and flaked paint on hood and front fenders. I am selling this car because I have a 1969 that I have put even more time into. Brother has moved up to newer Porsches and now will be running a 2000 Boxster... so, this one is now extra, and looking for a good home. Obviously, I have tried to describe the car as best I can but the car is sold like all used cars, as-is, with no warranty expressed or implied and while we have had a BLAST at the track (BlackHawk Farms and RT66 Road Track in Chicagoland) we cant guarantee its suitability for any application. If you can, please come drive it - you wont be disappointed. If you cant, them watch the YouTube videos. Ask questions. Good luck, Doc On Aug-19-10 at 05:25:53 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATES to auction description. I have now checked and all 11 videos are available on youtube.com. Search for "Mike's 1968 Porsche 912"... this will return 11 differnt videos, all taken in the past week or so. I do a couple of curb tours around the car, showing off the body condition, the underside, and the flakes in the paint. You will see that when we get a small chip at the track we cover it with matching electrical tape. If you cant see the couple of flakes on the hood, then it just goes to show how well they are masked by the tape. The tape isnt to mislead buyers, its to protect from further damage till new paint - tape seals against weather and I got lucky with second role of tape matching near-flawlessly. In one of the videos I mention the tire size and its correct - they are Kumho 205/50-15's in front and 225/50-15's in rear. Both have two summers on them - that means realistically about 5000 miles total. I use the car for daily driver but all local trips and avoiding bad weather. I drove the car from Chicagoland to Minneapolis last fall and it was a blast!!! Talk about getting attention. The rest of the videos are inside tours, run through electricals, and driving tours. They show the car had tight problem-free steering, suspension, and ride, at both normal neighborhood speeds and at higher-than-legal highway speeds. Gauges work, report true, and even the clock works accurately. You can hear sound system in the background. I failed to mention the car has original 1968 steel spare wheel in wheel bay - likely still with 1968 air in case anyone wants to know. Its a gem of a tire and I can only imagine what it was like to drive the car with those narrow 4" snow-tire-looking tires on all four corners. I'll be writing more as people ask questions. My price is what I think is reasonable. I am losing money at the BuyItNow price. My own purchase plus costs of parts far exceeds this, but, I think its unreasonable to look to make huge profit when the economy tanked since I purchased the car. Dont think Im selling low because something is wrong - thats not whats going on. I have two other vintage german cars to race, I need to focus on them and I hope this car goes to someone who's been looking for a classic Porsche they can afford, and is willing to complete some cosmetic improvements. I have great feedback on eBay, and have been selling restored cars for many years now. On Aug-19-10 at 05:32:57 PDT, seller added the following information: More questions - No, wheels are not 'snowflakes'. Phone distracted me when I was writing. They are proper Porsche COOKIE CUTTER wheels. Sorry for calling them snowflakes. Yes, lugs are mixed alloy and steel on each wheel - rebalanced for this configuration. Was in photos of high speed racers I found, and recommended by old guys at track who didnt trust alloy lugs. Rides great. Tires are Kumho Ecsta AST's with directional tread. Rubber is 91 H rated for high speeds. Stripe is from GTRacing.com Badges are all original, and all chrome/brightwork is there and in gorgeous condition.
