Vehicle Detail
1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider- Very nice condition, great driver for cruising the windy back roads! I only drive it occasionally, and it has always been garage kept since I’ve owned it. The car had been restored over the last five years to be a decent driver, not a show car. Actual mileage unknown as speedometer cable was broken when I bought the car. The paint and body are very good- a couple of minor scratches and chips as a result of normal driving and use, but as the pictures show, the car is straight and fairly original overall. You can avoid the following narrative and skip to the nuts and bolts of what I’ve done with the car at the end if you wish, of read on if you like long stories! I originally bought the Duetto about six years ago because it was straight and fairly rust free (it had some rust in the floor pans and around the front jack points), but it also had a poor white paint job over the original green paint. I took it down to bare metal, and found no surprises. I had the floor pans replaced and new front jack points installed- the rockers, trunk, spare wheel well and the rest of the body were in great shape, and I chose to paint the car in a two part acrylic enamel silver with a clear coat. I sandblasted and painted the engine bay silver while the engine was out to match the anticipated silver paint job. I also removed the dash and had the glove box door, left and right dash pieces painted when the car was being painted to match the exterior. The seats and top were removed, so all the rear boot area, floors, door jambs and trunk were painted as well- all in all, a good paint job for a driver! The car is always garage kept in sunny, dry Arizona. I also added the headlight covers with European style "under the plexiglass" trim rings- a hard to come by item, but allows adjusting the headlights without going through the wheel well when needed, unlike re-mounting the headlight buckets behind the opening, a nice touch. If you prefer the non-cover look, I can put the old headlight trim rings back on and keep the plexi covers- your choice! I also upgraded to Hella H4 Halogen headlights, with power going through relays under the hood to limit the current going through the rather delicate stalk mounted headlight switch- these were selling for about $400 last time I checked, so definitely worth protecting. While the engine was out, I had Santo’s Alfa in Northridge go through the engine and tranny- new pistons, rings, cylinders, oil pump, water pump, flywheel resurfaced, new clutch, bearings, seals and the Webers gone through. The head was reworked, new seals and a couple of new valves , the others resurfaced. Everything is stock specification, with the exception of a Bosch breakerless ignition for better reliability. The air plenum and cam covers were polished just for a clean look- these engines just look fantastic. The Transmission needed a couple of new synchros, which were replaced, and all new seals- it was in pretty good shape, but I still take it easy on the shift into second gear, as this is a known soft spot on older Alfas transmissions. The rear end is pretty much bulletproof and was in good shape, so I just had the differential fluid changed. I also put a new bearing and donut on the driveshaft, as well as a new U-joint on the differential end. All in all, a good running drive train. Santo was a huge resource in getting things right here! As for the brakes and suspension, new discs and pads were installed about 2-3 thousand miles ago along with new braided brake lines, new limit straps on the rear, new bushings all around. It has red Konis all around- they were in good shape, so I left them in- the mileage is unknown as they came with the car when I bought it. Tires are one year old, have about a thousand miles on them. All in all, the car rides nice. It came with the Cromodora ferrari style wheels, and I located a matching style wheel for the spare. I had a new canvas top put on about three years ago- top frame is in good shape, and the rear window is crystal clear. New side rubber was installed when the top was replaced. The boot for covering the top when down is in decent shape (although some of the stitching on the underside of the boot which doesn’t show is loose in a couple of spots- could use re-stitching). The seats were recovered about four years ago, and I installed new door panels last year, along with having the dash cover restored- no cracks here! The rubber mats are in okay shape, but I invested in new fitted carpet mats to help preserve them- they look pretty nice! The ashtray is actually from a ’69, as are the seats (which have headrests) done by a previous owner for whatever reason. The drop in lighter was missing, but I replaced it with a 12V adapter plug socket, which is handy for charging cell phones, reading light (included) GPS, etc. The padded steering wheel is also not original, but I like it! All the gauges work, the fan works, the under hood light works, back up light works, but the light in the rear view mirror doesn’t work. The one speed windshield wiper motor was replaced with a two speed wiper motor at some point- a good improvement in my opinion. I also have a factory hardtop from my old red Duetto which I have restored (all new rubber, vinyl covering and headliner, good glass with new rear windshield gasket). This is not included with the car, but if interested, I can negotiate a price to include it with the sale of the Duetto. I’m posting a couple of additional pictures in case a potential buyer is interested. Please feel free to ask questions- I think my reserve is reasonable, but please don’t ask what it is, cause I won’t tell in fairness to all potential buyers. Please only bid if you are serious, and I will only sell to a buyer in the U.S.- no overseas bidders please! Shipping will be the responsibility of the winning bidder, and I’ll help out on this end as much as I can for pick up or loading. I’ll accept a bank transfer, certified check or cash if you prefer to pick up in person. I’m located in Prescott AZ, and would encourage a personal inspection of the car if you’re interested and local, or have someone you can arrange an inspection with. Remember, this is a 43 year old vehicle, and is sold without any warranty or guarantees, but it is what it is and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it! The Duetto is also being offered for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early at any time. Please don’t bid if you have no feedback or negative feedback.
