Vehicle Detail

1967 Pontiac Catalina Convertible This is a very nice original car. The description is long and detailed. It is the only way to really give justice to a car like this. If you are serious about purchasing it, I would recommend reading all of it. If you will do that, I think that you will have the information that you need to make an informed decision. Being that is a very nice, highly optioned low mileage Catalina, it is one well worth reading about. It just goes to show, there are still a few of them out there, for now. I am an individual collector here in Texas. I’ve been at this most of my life, love cars and wish I could keep all of them. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible and some have to be sold, therefore I’m offering this one to you. Some History I purchased this car with some others last year from a friend who has a large Pontiac Buick collection where it had been for the last several years. It was from a Florida estate where it belonged to an elderly gentleman who passed away. It was purchased new in California (still has the working Cal. Emissions system) where the owner was living at the time. On the passenger side of the windshield there is a small sticker that reads “Rancho Los Feliz” which is in the Las Angeles area and more precisely, the sticker would be to the condominium complex of the same name. At a later time the original owner retired to Florida and took the car with him. Though I can’t certify the miles, there is some source documentation with the car that in my opinion serves to substantiate it. The tires that are on the car now were installed by Sears in January of 1979. There is a tire warranty sticker on the underside of the trunk lid showing that. The warranty on the tires was for a period of 20,000 miles. The sticker shows that the mileage warranty period expired at 48,000 miles, meaning that the car was showing 28,000 miles in 1979. In addition to this, there is a “next service due” sticker on the inside of the windshield that shows the car was serviced by a Pontiac dealer on 02/12/2000 with the next 3,000 mile service being due at 31,541 miles. This would mean that the car was showing 28,541 miles at that time. I actually had that next service performed last year by my own mechanic. The odometer does work and now reads 28,740 miles. In my opinion, this is one of those cases where the car itself serves as documentation. The driving, appearance and meticulous maintenance attest to it. I think you will be pleased Equipment -400 C.I. Motor with 2 Barrel Carb. -Turbo 400 Automatic Transmission -Factory Air Conditioning—Works -Factory AM/FM Radio——Works -Power Windows—————Work -Power Steering -Power Brakes -Drivers Side Rearview Mirror -Factory Floor Mats -8 Lug Wheels Description Mechanical Motor This car is equipped with the original 400 C.I. motor and 2 barrel carburetor. The motor runs great and is tight just as you would expect. There are no knocks, pings, rattles or any other undesirable noises. There are no signs of any excess wear at all. It appears that it was maintained with fuel stabilizer because I did not have to have the tank pulled and cleaned. That may have been done before I purchased it. The fuel filter was clean and the gas did not smell bad. I did have everything serviced and a tune up. The car has run great every mile that I have driven it. It did have a lot of carbon build up and it was obvious that it had probably not spent much time on the highway. I have driven the car approximately 100-150 miles since purchasing it and that has pretty much cleared up. I think a road trip would be the best thing in the world for this motor. On the under side, there is a very faint trace of oil on the pan, but I have seen no evidence of it on the floor in my garage or in the building where the cars are kept. It is obvious that the rear main seal was changed at some point. This would be due to the car’s having spent so many years sitting. This is evidenced in the fact that the oil pan has been painted. I think this is a good, otherwise there would surely be an issue. I have detailed the top side of the engine compartment just as I do all of my cars, but did not do the bottom. It is because of health issues that I cannot get under them as I once did. It really looks good on the bottom side for its age. You can still see some of the original paint on the underside of the motor. There are no issues with the motor that I am aware of. It is very strong. Transmission It is also still equipped with its original turbo 400 transmission. It shifts sure and smooth through all the gears and in reverse just as it should. The fluid looks good and there are no noises. No issues here that I am aware of. Rear End/Differential The rear end is smooth and quiet just as it should be with no adverse noises. Suspension- Front & Rear The suspension system is in excellent condition. The car sits up just as it should. It is tight and responsive. I have owned many Pontiac’s and still do. This, in my opinion is among the tightest, best driving cars that I have owned. I would say that it probably drives much the way that it did when new and is a pleasure. The front end wear parts appear to have been greased whether they needed it or not. The springs are solid and if you look closely still have some faint shine on them. The rear shocks were changed at some point in keeping with the way the car was maintained. I would think the originals warranted replacing due to age. Very solid suspension. No issues here. Brakes The brakes are in good condition all the way around and stop the car as they should. No darting or any other issues here that I am aware of. Exhaust System The exhaust system appears to be the original and with the original resonator. It all appears to be in very good condition and has no exhaust leaks. No issues here. Tires As mentioned before, the tires have been on the car since 1979. Though they have lots of tread, no miles to speak of and look great, they are old. I would think it wise to replace them before driving any distance. Air Conditioning System The air conditioning system has been replaced with GM replacement parts. It still has the R-12 system and is cooling well. The compressor is quiet and makes no adverse noises. The heat and defrost also work. Exterior Paint The paint looks very nice. I’m not sure how much of the paint is original if any. There are imperfections as you might expect with a car this age and a touch up behind the driver’s door where the paint color wasn’t matched perfectly. Having said all of this, the paint has a beautiful shine that is evident in the photos and it really looks great. It’s just a car with a stunning appearance. The paint in my opinion is in over all excellent condition. Body The body is in excellent condition just as you would expect. There is absolutely no rust. The fenders, hood, rockers, doors, quarter panels and trunk lid are excellent. There is no evidence that I can find of the car ever having been in any sort of major accident or anything of that nature. Other than a 4 inch long, scratch, ding (small, low and barely noticeable) place on the right front fender forward of the wheel well, this car is very straight. A Very nice body. Floor & Trunk Pans The pans are in excellent condition. There is no rust in any of the floor or trunk pans. The underside of the car doesn’t appear to have ever been cleaned. I like it that way because you can really see what is there. It is aged as one might expect and exceptionally nice for a car of this year. Frame The frame and all that goes with it is excellent, no rust or any other issues, very solid. Chrome & Stainless The chrome and stainless are over all, very nice. The front bumper is nice. The rear bumper has some scratches and ding on the passenger side. Given the appearance of such a nice original car, this isn’t really an issue. The stainless around and at the base of the windshield is excellent. The tail light bezels are also excellent as is the chrome and trim elsewhere on the car. Glass The glass is in excellent condition over all. There is a place on the passenger side of the windshield where he obviously let the windshield wiper wear and rub once upon a time. This can be buffed out. The windshield is otherwise very nice with no chips, cracks or other issues. The door and vent windows are also excellent. Interior The interior is all original and in near mint condition. Other than a mar on the driver’s seat bottom (visible in the photo) and some age cracks on the clear portion of the steering wheel, the interior is in impeccable condition. The original carpet is nice and the dash, dash pad, wood grain, trim, seat covers, door panels, kick panels, rear ash wells and side panels are all original and in excellent condition. Convertible Top, Top Frame, Hydraulics & Well liner The convertible top is also the original that came on the car new in ’67. It is over all excellent with minor flaws that would not warrant replacing it though the well liner is showing stains. The worst of the issues being that over time and with use, the glue on the very top of the glass has let loose somewhat. In my mind this is not an issue because it does not leak or make noise while driving, nor is it really noticeable unless you are looking for it and you have to look closely even then. The top looks and fits great and is still supple. It is very rare to find a 43 year old car that still has its original top and have it still be nice. Over all, a very nice top. Top Frame The top frame is in excellent condition and the original paint is nice there also. Pump Excellent Hydraulics Excellent, no leaks or other issues. Top Motor Excellent, raises and lowers the top quickly and efficiently probably just as it did when new. No issues. Trunk Compartment Excellent, though the trunk floor has never had any rust, after purchasing the car, I had the floor painted the original gray with the turquoise specs and it looks very nice. I also installed a new mat and side panels. Very nice trunk and floor. Summary This is a very nice car with a clear title. There are a lot of things you can replace and restore on a car. Miles and originality are not among them. These things go away one time and that’s it. This is an unrestored, mostly original, low mileage, highly optioned Catalina. Again, I think anyone who purchases this car should be well pleased.
