Vehicle Detail

Please take the time to read this entire ad. Read my information on the car, then you can read the listing that was on Ebay prior to me buying the car. Please note that I have taken the time to describe what is actually wrong with this car to the best of my knowledge, and in complete honesty. I just bought this car for my son. We picked it up with a trailer because of the engine not running. So, I took it to the mechanic. He pulled the gas tank and put a new fuel pump and a complete fuel assembly and put everything back together. The car indeed started right up, and runs nice. He took it up to the gas station, put some clean gas in it, and drove it back to his house. He then did a complete mechanical inspection of the car. I am going to list everything he found wrong with the car. Most of these things were not disclosed to me when I bought the car. Not knowing what was actually wrong with the car could have been a mistake by the original zero feedback seller, but it was definitely a mistake on my part for buying a car that was not originally running. I want the new buyer to understand everything, and not find any major surprises later. So I will give you an honest list of what the mechanic found. Please keep in mind this is most of the major things. There could still be a few minor things wrong, but you are definitely getting the major things wrong disclosed to you. #1. The Eaton supercharger is making a noise. It sounds like the bearings are bad. The impeller is starting to scrape the side of the housing. This supercharger will need to be rebuilt or replaced. I found one in great shape for $300, but not sure the guy even still has it. I did not call him. These are pretty easy to fix if you know what you are doing, and I certainly do not know what I am doing. #2. The engine has a miss under full acceleration. A compression check was done and the engine is still giving out 140 compression, which is pretty close to new. 100 is minimum acceptable. So, the mechanic said that it is a fuel injector that is bad or plugged, a bad spark plug wire, or a bad plug. It is not getting the fuel to the one cylinder. The engine sounds great though with no rattles, or noises. No smoke, and actually purrs. I am not sinking another dime into the car. But I might have him change the plug and wire, but he feels the injector is probably plugged. Some cleaner may take care of it, or you may have to get an injector. #3. The brake booster is bad, and that makes the brake pedal hard. I found one for $69.00 #4. A coolant leak by the throttle body, which looks like a bad hose. #5. Tires are dry rotted, and are unsafe. All four need replaced. #6. The air conditioning is the old system, and needs freon, or needs to be converted. Compressor seems to turn fine. #7. Little things such as a new sun visor, the front bumper inside cover has the paint off it, the right mirror has the paint faded, and the weather stripping around the car needs to be replaced. Not all of it, but a lot of it. The area below the back window, above the trunk lid, has rusted some. Someone has repaired this area, but I still noticed it. The rest of the car does not appear to have any rust other than a few hidden water run-off areas, etc...that are minor. Underneath the car looks great too. On a positive note, the transmission was replaced under warranty at 48,000 miles. Shifts great. I just spent $350.00 for a new fuel pump, fuel assembly new belts, etc. The fuel parts are all installed. Belts need to be installed. The old ones are starting to crack, etc. The stereo sounds great, the body is in great condition, etc. Exhaust looks great. Interior is in nice condition. Body appears to be dent free with the original paint other than perhaps a few little door dings. All power options seem to work. A ton of receipts come with the car. (thousands of dollars worth of maintenance, parts, etc.) The body, and drive train seemed to be great except for what is mentioned. This would be an excellent parts car. It would also make a daily driver with a little work. Or fix it for the strip, to show, or whatever. Just depends on how much time, money, and expertise you have. It is an unmolested XR7, and has been registered in Florida since new. It has been sitting for a long time, and that is definitely explains some of the problems. This could be a very nice car for someone who has the knowledge or the money to get it back in shape. This is not a basket case by any means, but it needs some work. I can supply more photos if you are serious. You can start the car and drive it, but I am concerned about the tires that are ready to blow. Some fuel cleaner may take care of the 06th injector, but who knows. It appears that you can just cut the belt to the supercharger for now, and fix that later. But please check with someone who knows. My mechanic is not familiar with this factory set up, nor am I. Thanks Below is the listing when it was first offered on Ebay. It will give you a ton of information. Also, I set a buy it now price at $1500.00 If the car does not meet the reserve, I may allow the highest bidder to take the car if he wants it. But I do not know at this time. I think the buy it now price is a great deal for the condition of the body and all the parts, but I realize it needs work too. I could sink a grand into it, but at this point, I am done fooling with it. Someone may get one heck of a deal! If you use the buy it now, full payment has to be made or it will still run for sale. Contact me with any questions, or if you need a certain picture or want to come and see it. I disclosed the things I saw, but remember, I haven not even driven it. The mechanic took it to the gas station and back home. I would suggest that you come and look at it first. That is what I will be doing from now on. Thank you. Also, I have the car listed locally, so I reserve the right to sell it and remove my listing. If the listing makes the reserve however, I will not remove it and it will sell to the highest bidder, regardless of the price. 1990 Cougar Supercharged XR-7 Super Coupe SC Rare, collectible muscle car. Pure stock Florida car with Automatic Trans, Power Moonroof, Oxford White with Crystal Blue fabric interior. Same family ownership since new! Stored last 10 years. Senior (and affluent) adult lady owned and driven. Never Raced. Never Wrecked. Body perfectly straight and solid, tires fair, original paint still glossy, interior clean. Spare tire and jack never used. Totally original, unmolested 100% Florida car in absolutely great condition – even better than the pictures show. This car is exactly what you would expect as owned by a little old lady with the money to properly and meticulously maintain it. 113,732 miles, all books, records, and even original window sticker available! All work performed by authorized Lincoln-Mercury dealer. This particular XR-7 was the 1990 Miami Auto Show featured car (on the turntable at the show entrance.) As such this car was equipped with virtually every option available, including power moonroof, 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, keyless entry system, illuminated entry system, illuminated vanity mirrors, interval wipers, auto headlamps (including both auto-dimming and delay,) power antenna (works, but needs replacement mast,) premium audio system, tilt wheel, cruise control, air cond, rear window defroster, anti-theft alarm (with hidden, manual fuel shut-off switch added,) dual power side mirrors, power windows, power locks with remote trunk release, Traction-Lok, 16” alloy wheels and variable assist power rack and pinion steering. Man, does this car handle! Of course, the ride and handling can be instantly adjusted from the driver’s seat from comfort to firm with the electronically adjustable sport-tuned 4-wheel independent suspension – a very sweet feature. It stops quickly, too, with ABS and 4-wheel disc brakes, despite there being an intermittent brake line fluid leak. The ABS works fine, despite the leak (it needs to be topped off every week to 10 days if being driven. Doesn’t drip when parked.) It also has 6-way power driver’s seat, and both front seats have electrically adjustable lumbar support and very cool electrically adjustable side bolsters. A custom dash cover is included (it hides the one crack in the dash.) The special thing about the 1990 XR-7, however, is the factory Eaton supercharged and intercooled 3.8 V6, known for rubber burning torque you can really feel (315 ft-lbs of torque) but decent real world fuel mileage (mid-high 20’s on the road.) (To see how well these supercharged XR-7's perform, search YouTube for “1990 cougar XR7 sc burnout”) The supercharged 1990 XR-7 also has a distributorless ignition with individual ignition coil packs, a copper and brass downflow radiator, and lots of special factory installed items not found on plain Cougar LS models or '91 and later XR-7's. It's only the '89 and '90 XR-7's that are the real deal. Fast as it is, it still has an NHTSA 5 Star Safety Rating. A couple of areas of the exposed rubber trim pieces are starting to turn brittle with a couple of very small chips now missing, however the door, trunk, and sunroof weather stripping is excellent. Some of the dark tint film on the windows is starting to lift away in spots, and also several round spots of paint have flaked off the top of the front bumper although the rest of the paint on the car - all original and with no dents - is still there and looks good and the rear bumper’s paint looks new. The doors hang perfectly straight with even gaps and do not squeak or sag, nor is there any body rot-thru. One annoying problem has developed while the car has been stored – this car starts instantly and runs fine on starting fluid, but now won’t pump gas from the tank. At this point it is unknown if the problem is a bad relay or fuel pump shut-off switch, the alarm immobilizer, a bad (or stuck) fuel pump itself, or just a dirty fuel filter or blown fuse. Please note: the price I’ll accept has been adjusted assuming the worst. To be clear, this car starts instantly and runs well, but can’t be driven very far until the fuel pumping problem is resolved. [Note: It does drive in gear – both forward and reverse – if someone walks along side continuously spraying in the starting fluid. Not a good idea for long trips! But the car can been driven forward and backward across the parking lot running on starting fluid, demonstrating the transmission works, too – in fact, it instantly goes into gear.] The battery – a Die Hard Gold - is strong and has several years left on the warranty. Available only in 1989-1990, this 7th generation supercharged Mercury Cougar XR-7 (the SC enthusiasts call it an MN12) is a real sleeper in the collector car / muscle car market (Look it up!) and the prices continue to rise. They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to. Really nice examples of 1990 Supercharged XR-7 Cougars are now selling in the $4000 – $6000 range (some for even twice that!) which makes this particular car a steal! In fact, for what they are going for these days, all ‘89-’90 XR-7’s in this condition are a bargain, given this kind of performance, handling, economy, and muscle car exclusivity. This car is very attractive, roomy, comfortable, has a huge trunk, goes like stink, and even today it’s stylish enough, especially in monochrome white, to really get attention. Remember, there was a very low production of these – only about 4000. And less than 1000 with automatic and moonroof. This totally original XR-7 car is fresh out of storage and has never been modified, never hot-rodded, and never damaged. Note: everything else seems to be working as it should (windows, locks, moonroof, keyless entry, power seats, lights, power trunk, and so on) and absolutely everything was working perfectly the day it was last driven (before my older sister passed away.) This XR-7 was my sister’s car, and she was fanatical about maintaining the car, but she passed away some time ago and I haven’t really driven it much since then. While the memories are nice, the registration and insurance are due to be renewed again at the end of July and since I have my own car – a Mustang convertible – it just no longer make sense for me (at 60 years old) to keep paying for the Cougar to just sit there. The registration and insurance is current, it passed all state emissions and safety tests until Florida stopped testing, and the FL title is clear and unencumbered and was transferred from my sister to me in 1998. Please be aware that this car is for sale locally here in South Florida, as well, so I reserve the right to cancel this auction at anytime. If you are at all seriously interested, and can give this car the home it deserves, get in touch with me!On Jul-31-10 at 13:03:38 PDT, seller added the following information: Updated07/31/2010: I had several members ask about the rust under the car on the trunk tire well. I took several pictures of this area. There is nothing there but a little surface rust from where it rained and the water was discolored. It actually wipes right off with no rust damage at all. I also took a few more pictures of the frame rail, exhaust area, middle of car, etc. to show that there is no rust!! A part of the brake line and a few bolts have just light surface rust on them. The last picture is actually where the trunk tire well is attached to part of the frame. The material you see is some type of rust preventative or adhesive. It scapes off, and it is like insulation almost. It is clear, sold, and no rust whatsoever under that. Thanks much. On Aug-01-10 at 11:08:39 PDT, seller added the following information: I have lowered the price by $200! Now an absolute steal at $1300.00 Buy it and part it out and get your money back. The engine, transmission, power roof, radio, interior, exhaust, body parts, etc. This is way too good of a car to part out, but it is priced to sell!! I will also hold for a couple of weeks if necessary, if payment is made up front.
