Vehicle Detail
1969 Triumph Spitfire VIN # FDU 42414L (also has a separate serial number) I purchased this car nearly three years ago. The owner before me had the 4-speed transmission rebuilt. (some receipts came with) I have had the following work done --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakes all professionally replaced - $470 New rear transverse HD leaf spring/shocks $220 New manifold-back complete competition Monza exhaust $275 Complete engine rebuild & painted from British Auto Works $3500 magna-fluxed new block (build date to match frame) new head new pistons, rings, rods, bolts, studs, gaskets, seals machined crank, new bearings, oil pump new water pump new oil pan new painted valve cover all new valve train, springs, hardened seals new generator new clutch, disc, and throw-out bearing New Black Full Vinyl Top - $260 New nitrogen-filled 175/70-R13 tires x4 $400 Complete new 12-pc carpet set in black - $210 New horn $26 New steering rack boots $60 New battery $70 New heater control valve and cables $40 I maintain complete files for all the cars I restore professionally and sell. I have receipts for everything I list above, and for lots of small things not listed. Those records go with the car. Two recent (days ago) test drives are available on youtube.com. Search for "Mikes 1969 Triumph Spitfire" inside and outside tours. I have enjoyed having this Spitfire. It now has a torquey 1300 cc engine with dual Stromberg carbs that EASILY pulls myself (6' 215 lbs) AND a larger buddy both inside and still can chirp the tires!. It had an engine that was damaged, and I decided to completely replace it. The best shop to build a replacement engine was from British Auto Works in Portland, OR (http://www.britishautoworks.com/contact.html). They found me a block of the proper build date and built it up completely. This block has not been damaged. I have completed the break-in 500 or so miles, done the oil changes as needed, and had fun this summer. I have other cars that need my attention, and I need to let go of one. My friends have german cars, and so I am going to stick with my Porsches. This is fortunate for whoever has been looking for a good Triumph car and wants all the hard parts already taken care properly. The body of this car is in very very good shape, but not flawless. Inspect the photos carefully, and stop by to see it in person and drive it. The transmission is solid and tight, the clutch new, and the body panels and joints and hinges all sound. I installed all new tires when I got it, I also had the shop install all new brakes, drums, hoses, shoes. The car has vintage Minilite racing wheels that run true and are balanced. It is missing the center caps. The paint is in good shape, but could use refreshing (and a new color). The vinyl top is in good shape with only two small prior repairs. I have had it out in the HEAVY rain and no leaks at all, but the rear plastic window is foggy and I purchased an all new complete roof. I have not installed it - too many other car projects and its not critical in nice weather. The interior is cream-white vinyl, which I have never found replacement for so I have left it. The seats, dash, and door panels are original 1969 one-year-only style and in nice shape with no damage beside minor wear. They are NOT a swap from some other newer car like all too many Triumph have. The dash is all wood and in nice shape. The speedo works, but the glass is broken on the tach and so I have detached it. I do have the trim ring for the tach. I installed new heater control valve and cables and refinished the levers - all work as they should. I installed all new carpet, part glued in the way the factory does it, and part not glued in (also the way the factory does it) so it can be pulled out to dry in case of driver weather judgment errors. The doors/handles work perfectly inside and out and the doors close solid and have no rust, just like the body. The trunk and hood also fit and seal solidly the way they should. See pictures so you understand. The brightwork (chrome parts) are all there and in nice shape. See pictures!!!!! There are small holes drilled in the upper bumper. I was told previous owners towed the vehicle. Its a universal type mount - I used it as well to bring the car home for engine replacement. There is no radio (never was). There is no A/C (duh). Steering is in good shape, wiring is good - all lights work, including brake light and hazards. Like all Lucas electrics, I have had some trouble and replaced some wiring a piece at a time. I love driving the car. I enjoy WORKING on the car because the entire front siwngs up to make life easy (not like my porsches). I do NOT need to sell the car, I simply have too many projects and not enough time and I know when to thin the herd. If YOU have always wanted a Triumph, and wanted a bit left to do to make the car your own, a "lite" project, then I think this is ideal for you as I have done all the hard heavy stuff. Car is immediately drive-able home-able and you can have a blast without doing anything to it. But, like all pre-owned vehicles, the car comes as-is, with no warranty offered or implied. Look at the photos. Watch the videos. I have been forthcoming and open about everything. Come drive the car, with or without me**. I have offered use of this car to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for fund raising and it has been popular. My 14 year old daughter wants to me to hold on to it, and paint it PINK so that she can have it in a year.... please. Save me from this fate. Doc last minute. I am replacing the hydraulic clutch linkage, both master and slave cylinders and lines, with brand new parts from Victoria British Parts. The car has been drivable and fine, but these are original parts and its the last thing I planned to do. $150 for parts. On Jul-22-10 at 07:04:55 PDT, seller added the following information: - i got asked about the small play in the steering wheel seen in videos. i know what it is and have ordered the part - its called a 'flex link' between the steering colum and the steering rack - its a universaljoint that slides on to splines. after 40 years it develops some slop. you can easily see that this is the part with the play by turning the wheel and observing the steering column with the hood open. i am used to it, but dont mind getting this part. thats another $49 i just put into it. - i got asked about two missing lug nuts. i had forgotten all about them. they have been ordered from Victoria British Auto Parts... will be here before the car leaves me. - i got asked about small squeak in steering. it was really humid during test drive. i oiled steering column. no more squeak. sorry about that. - youtube.com bounced one of my videos - a test drive that was 2 minutes too long. i cut it in half, posted both on youtube. now youll find three videos under 'mikes 1969 triumph spitfire'. - on youtube.com videos i lifted hood/front end and you can hear me say i replaced all gauges. i meant i replaced all engine sensors (oil pressure, water temp). i installed a duplicate set of aftermarket gauges to serve as a double check of factory guages. they agree. but i did not replace the original guages. sorry about having mispoken. - i got asked if the car has a stereo. my sales literature shows no stereos in any picture. this car has no radio/stereo, i bring my iPod. sorry. - you can find exact dimensions and weights on wikipedia and here - http://www.triumphspitfire.com/Size.html.
