Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a 1948 MGTC. The original color of the car was Ivory with green interior and green radiator grill. HISTORY -- This car was purchased new in Los Angeles. The original owner drove it until 1957 when he sold it to the second owner, a young LAPD officer. In 1958, the second owner decided to "spruce it up." He got a $29.95 Earl Scheib paint job in forest green and ordered new black naugahyde seat covers and paneling from JC Whitney. (You can see the original Ivory paint beneath where the dark green paint has chipped off over the years.) Other than the repaint and the reupholstery in 1958, this car has never had any other attempt at an upgrade during its entire existence. The second owner continued to drive the car until 1964, when he stored it away in his garage in Los Angeles. It sat in his garage until about 10 years ago when I bought it. It has been sitting in my warehouse since that time. CONDITION -- Having been a Southern California car for its entire existence, and having been kept in a garage since it was purchased new, there is not a rusty area anywhere on this car, top or bottom. The wood is also like new throughout, including the wood around the rear of the cockpit that the top attaches to, the firewall wood, and the B-posts, which are almost always rotten on these cars. The doors don't sag a bit when opened, and are just as tight as when the car was new. Anyone restoring this car will not have to buy a single piece of replacement wood. ORIGINALITY -- Essentially everything that came on this car from the factory is still there. You will probably never see an unrestored MGTC that still has the original steering wheel, original cat's eye headlights, original horn, original SFT 462 foglamp, original "D" taillight, original matching numbers engine with original air cleaner and all the original carb attachments for fast running adjustment, choke, etc, and underdash cover, but this car has every one of those items still present. Also, I have checked the Lucas date codes on all the electrical items I could get to, including the generator, starter, coil, and regulator, and each one of them is dated 1948, indicating that they are the original ones that came with the car from the factory. DRIVE TRAIN -- I have never tried to turn the engine over as there really has been no reason to do so. The car has not been started since 1964 so the engine will certainly need to be gone through from top to bottom anyway. I do know that the engine was in running condition when the car was stored away in 1964 by the second owner because he was getting too big to fit in it comfortably anymore. This would be an excellent car to do a complete restoration on because there will be no hard-to-find missing parts to buy, no wood to replace, no rust to repair, and no dents or dings to repair, since the car has never been in an accident nor even a minor scrape. (Notice on the front view of the car that the fender eyebrows are perfectly symmetrical and horizontal, just as they were when the car left the factory.) I expect payment within 5 days of the end of the auction. The car can be picked up after your check has cleared my bank. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, but I can give the names of a couple good, reliable shippers if you wish. Buyer will be given a Bill of Sale and the California Title for the car, which is in my name.
