The body, drive train and suspension were re-engineered with dozens of improvements as the car reached the pinnacle of its 21-year design. With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and the attrition rate often accelerated by careless second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being 18 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of British car enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well-preserved car presented for auction here! Purchased in 1996 with only 38,000 miles, (the original owner was a doctor) the car has belonged to a mature, aerospace engineer and University professor who lives in the affluent suburbs of Glendale, CA. For the past 16 years, he has treated it like his one and only child. Exceptionally well cared-for by Britalia Import Car Service in Fullerton, CA a complete service history will be included for the new owner. The result is a vintage Coupe that was always garaged; meticulously maintained and has never left the Golden State. Exterior: Other than a few panels that have been refinished for cosmetic reasons, this is the factory original, New Glacier White, finish (color code NDP). The clean, 100% rust and accident free finish with a few VERY minor cosmetic flaws is a very rare and highly desirable trait of any collectible automobile! There are 2 small dents. Fortunately, they are both below the bumpers and almost out of sight: One is under the front bumper on the driver's side and the other is below the rear bumper in the center. (See photos)There is also one 5" area on the trunk where the clear coat has lifted but it is so slight, it wouldn't show up in a photo. Other than that, the finish looks so deep you could dive into it. In this case, what lies beyond the shiny exterior speaks volumes about the loving care this XJS has always received and underscores the car's Southern California provenance. Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the finish was preserved over the years. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concours d'Elegance. Newer Pirelli P4000 Radials were installed on the original, factory chromed alloys. Wheel detail is amazing here. Don’t they look as though they just came from the box? Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how perfect the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at an 18-month old, not an 18-year old car. This one is that clean! Engine & Mechanical: The car's engine compartment is all original, factory-correct, down to the decals and markings. Originality abounds. This is a numbers matching Jaguar, featuring its factory-installed, 5.3 Liter V-12 engine and all the original ancillaries. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no major oil leaks. Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, tens of thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance over the years, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems. No wear item has been left unattended; As a result, this XJS is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any 12 cylinder XJS can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? Like a bottle of fine wine, a Jaguar interior does not age gracefully if the car is not stored properly. Typically, as these expensive Jags grow older and get resold or replaced by a newer car, they lose their spot in the garage and are left exposed to outside elements. Unfortunately, the great outdoors is the Achilles’ heel to aging Jags as bad things begin to happen. All the expensive leather, rubber seals and wood trim becomes dried, faded and cracked costing thousands of dollars to repair or replace. Not in this case! Always garaged and never smoked in, the original, leather seats are still soft and supple, the wool carpet looks great and the genuine wood trim is nearly pristine. There are a few VERY MINOR cosmetic flaws including some worn areas in the carpet and the leather is worn along the lumbar portion where the driver gets in-and-out of the seat (see photo). Some areas of the headliner and windshield post material have de-laminated (see photo) but are not in need of replacement. Other than that, mostly everything looks, smells, feels and operates as if the car was delivered yesterday, not 18 years ago. The full array of factory gauges all work flawlessly and the A/C blows ICE COLD. The upgraded, Sony 4-speaker, AM/FM Casette audio system has a removable face.. and a cool joy stick… and 10-disk CD changer located in the trunk guarantees pleasurable audio, even when traveling at speeds well above the double nickel. Also included are ALL sets of keys. The spacious trunk contains all the important bits; spare wheel/tire, jack & lug wrench, new battery and upgraded Sony 10-disk CD changer. A picture says more than a thousand words: this all original trunk is clean! Drivability: The three famous words that best describe the XJS experience are smooth, silent, and sensuous. This Roadster can cruise at speeds that many cars would struggle to reach and does so in a grand manner. Its powerful, 5.3 liter V-12 engine and 6-shock suspension layout is intelligently engineered and the power-to-weight ratio is very favorable, indeed. In any climate, the engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, oil pressure and coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Power steering is precise and the automatic transmission shifts seamlessly. The disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Throwing this XJS through the curves, aided by upgraded suspension, 6 new shocks and Pirelli Radials, handling is tight and superb with no rattles or pulls. All in all, this Jaguar is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! Despite its age and miles, the car is perfectly reliable and ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live.
