Vehicle Detail

You are viewing a very desirable and highly sought after 1969 AMX, factory built under special paint code “3A”, otherwise known as Big Bad Orange. Evidence of this is denoted in the factory installed (and never removed) trim tag which will be show and decoded further down. Unique to the 1969 AMX, Big Bad Orange was applied in a monochromatic scheme over the body and both front and rear bumpers along with a special trim package. Of the 8,239 AMX’s built in 1969 (the highest production year for the three year run of the AMX specific model) Big Bad Orange was applied to only 284 AMX‘s, making for an extremely rare option. Coming or going, you will know this is a special AMX. This particular Big Bad Orange AMX is also factory equipped with the 425 ft. pound torque / 315 HP 390 AMX engine. As an optional engine (290 CID was standard equipment), this was the largest engine available for the AMX. Of particular importance, this is the original engine which was matted to this chassis by AMC as original in 1969. Backed by the Borg Warner Heavy Duty 3-speed automatic transmission, this transmission was specially calibrated for extreme performance when optioned behind the 390 engine. Of the 8,239 AMX’s in 1969, only 2,183 carried this drive train option (see http://www.planethoustonamx.com/ and numerous other sources). It is estimated that less than 100 of the Big Bad Orange 1969 AMX’s were factory equipped with the 390 / auto option. Very few remain today. Besides the optional (and documented) 3A Big Bad Orange, special AMX 390 engine package and heavy duty transmission, this AMX still retains the original Dana Model 20 rear with a 3.15:1 ratio and Twin-Grip performance axle. Naturally, you would expect an AMX of such rare options to also include the infamous Go-Pak performance package, and this AMX does. This package includes power steering, heavy duty ventilated 4-piston disk brakes, heavy duty race inspired front and rear suspension (including the Torque Link rear suspension; ala 1965-1966 Shelby GT-350), Heavy duty cooling system with a seven-blade fan, an 8000 RPM tachometer, 140 MPH speedometer with analog engine monitoring gauges, space-saver spare and of course, the famous “let’s race” over-the-top body striping. Rarity aside, this AMX offers a unique opportunity to enjoy one of the best looking, accelerating and handling muscle cars built from an era where muscle cars dominated cruise nights and drag strips from coast to coast. The rarity of the ‘69 AMX Big Bad colors (Big Bad Green ~ 293 produced, Big Bad Blue ~ 195 produced, Big Bad Orange ~ 284 produced) is evident in auction prices on the rare occasion these vehicles cross the auction block. Case in point: Lot 1245, Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2005: BBG 390 / auto, $62,700 Lot 975, Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2006: BBG 390 / Auto, $55,000 These prices don’t seem to “add 10% for Big Bad color option” to the value, they seem to double the value as evidenced by 1969 AMX’s which rarely exceed $30,000 at the key auction houses. Presently owned by only the third owner, this AMX recently received it’s first and only restoration. It was an inland California AMX before being brought to Arizona several years ago. Displaying only xxxxx original miles, this AMX lead a pampered life as each of the prior owners have always been aware of it’s uniqueness. As such, it only required a “light” restoration which retained all of the original body panels. This included stripping it to bare metal followed by an application of base coat in BBO with factory correct black Go-Pak striping being painted in lieu of the factory decal application. This was followed by a clear coat, which was then color sanded and buffed to the brilliance shown. Both AMC and Chrysler shared in the incorporation of the exterior body color to the under hood area’s. Nothing is more dramatic than opening the hood of a Big Bad Orange AMX with the brilliant application of chrome to the valve covers and air canister lid, together with the Bright Turquoise Metallic engine color against a Big Bad Orange canvas. Balancing the eye-popping exterior is the is the Charcoal interior. This has received a complete restoration using Legendary Interior as the primary source. The often replaced factory steering wheel has been restored to factory standards by noted restoration artist Rim Blow Buddy. All new weather seals were incorporated as well as Amark Reproductions top quality decals. The engine compartment, interior and trunk have been highly detailed for a show car presentation. The underside, is neat, clean and offers a factory presentation. Clean and original. In a up grade from factory stock, 15”x7” chrome Magnum 500 wheels (new), have replaced the standard 14”x6” with trim ring wheels (an un-restored set of four will be included with this sale if the buyer wishes). Chosen not only for their significantly better appearance, a beefy 15” Radial T/A not only increases traction but offers a smoother and quieter ride. The following are the factory parts and codes found on this AMX. All are original to this AMX. I have personally owned and driven many muscle cars, including the elite MOPARS with shaker hoods. And never, never, have I driven any muscle car that garners more attention than this Big Bad Orange AMX. This is not the vehicle to drive if your trying to keep a low profile! I invite you to personally inspect this AMX by calling 602-738-5196 or by E-mail All photo's of the car are untouched.
