Vehicle Detail

We are selling our 1984 GMC G2500 Vandura ¾ ton conversion van. This van was purchased to be a family traveling vehicle last August. After some minor repairs and upgrades, it served its purpose well. We are selling this because we need to reduce our vehicle inventory, I will probably be selling another vehicle on here in the near future. I have not included many pictures due to the time involved with making the videos shown below. I can send more pictures if necessary, just email me…. This van has roughly 105,000 miles on it (I say roughly because I will continue to drive this until it sells). The previous owner wanted to use this as a touring van for his band, but he decided it needed a little more TLC than he wanted (or knew how) to provide. I am a mechanical person and I love to tinker on stuff and I could see the potential in a very well maintained and lower mileage van. The history report shows an accident in 1995, but I can't find any evidence of damage beyond normal wear and tear. When I purchased the van, I drove 2 hours to pick it up. Due to fuel filter issues, I had to drive it back home at 15 MPH (barely a crawl up any hills) or it would die. It started to get dark (we didn’t plan for it to take that long to get back home) and when I turned the lights on they kept getting dimmer. I thought it wasn’t charging due to not being able to run full RPM, but I stopped at a Wallyworld and bought a new battery anyway. The new battery helped us make it home, but it still didn’t charge, so I replaced the alternator and all of the belts the next day. I also changed the common “Tune-Up” items (plugs, wires, etc…) and the lack of power and dying situation didn’t get any better. The fuel tank began to leak so I realized that it had rusted from the inside due to sitting with little fuel in it. I replaced the tank with a good used tank, and installed a new fuel sending unit which made the gauge start working. While replacing the alternator, I noticed that the smog pump was not spinning freely (hence the squealing belts after I got it to come up to operating RPMs). Since this is not required for operation, I removed the pump and didn’t install a new one. If you notice in the video of the engine running with the doghouse cover off, you hear a little extra noise (almost sounds like clicking or something). That noise is the exhaust tubes that went to the smog pump system. After replacing the tank and filters, I drove it at full power for a few miles and noticed it wouldn’t come up to full operating temp, the thermostat was stuck in the open position. I replaced the thermostat and drove it again, now that it was able to come up to temp the pressure in the cooling system blew a heater hose… Back to the driveway for another evening of tinkering. I replaced the heater and radiator hoses, I also noticed that all the vacuum lines were very dry rotted so I replaced those too. I replaced the radiator cap after having the system flushed and refilled at the local Valvoline oil change center, where I also had the oil and filter changed and a full lube job completed. I replaced the wiper blades and the washer fluid pump since I was feeling extra tinkerish that day. With new hoses, it drove great, had full power, that is when I replaced the very dry rotted tires with some functional used tires. The tires on it are nothing to brag about but they have decent tread and I have driven them several thousand miles with no issues. The spare has been plugged but holds air and is very much useable. The van was starting to get the “sitting behind the house” bugs worked out. The brake master cylinder leaks a little fluid around the cap gasket, after a long trip the outside of the reservoir would be a little damp. I purchased a pint of brake fluid to keep in the van but have not used the full bottle. The brakes have not been changed, I took a look at them and they still have some good life in them. The engine starts easily and runs very smooth with the proper amount of power. It has a 305 V8 with a 4 barrel carburetor. With the age and mileage, it has a little blue smoke at start up from worn valve stem seals. It only smokes for 5 seconds or so, so I decided not to make any changes. The engine does not leak much oil, there is a little showing up on the RH valve cover around the PCV valve and around the valve cover seal itself. You may have to add 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles or so. I did remove the electric choke plate since it was stuck in a partially closed position causing black smoke and very bad fuel mileage (around 6 mpg). It starts easily without the electric choke, even on 10 degree mountain mornings this past winter, you just pump the gas while cranking and it will fire right up in about 5 seconds on very cold mornings. The normal crank time is very low, less than one second if you have driven it that day, maybe 3 seconds if you have not driven in 24 hours (mostly due to fuel evaporating out of the carb). The transmission is very strong, it shifts smooth with no signs of trouble. The suspension, alignment, and drive shaft bearings have not required any repairs. All joints and bearings are very tight, and have been well lubed throughout the vans life. Included with the van are a working CB radio that came with the van when I purchased it, and the AM/FM/CD Player that the previous owner installed. Both of these work, the speakers are not very loud in the back but I think that is due to loose wiring in the front at the CD player. It also comes with the original table that sets up in mounting holes in the floor. It is equipped with Cruise Control and Air Conditioning. Both of these options are not working right now and I hadn’t taken the time to look into repairing them. It has a rear AC unit that is controlled by the driver, the fan will come on but it won’t blow cold since it uses the same components as the front unit. The heater and defrost fan works great and blows hot air with no problem. The power windows work great, as do all of the manual side windows in the back. The “wing” windows in the front work, the drivers side latch is worn and has to be spaced out to keep it from whistling while you are driving. The back bench seat folds out into a bed and there is a cooler built in. Lots of storage cubbies inside the van, the original carpet, curtains, and blinds are in good shape. The captains chairs swivel around so you can use the table and have a more comfortable layout for camping. The chairs lay down nearly flat so they would work for sleeping in as well. The cushions and fabric are in excellent shape, they are not broken down and flat. I would drive this van anywhere now, it has been my wife’s main mode of transportation since last fall. She used it to haul our 3 girls around, and we also used it a lot to move our stuff from Kentucky to North Carolina where we live now. Watch the following videos and hopefully you will see any answers to questions that you may have. After payment is received, you can arrange local pick-up or I may be able to deliver it to you. Again, I would not hesitate to drive this van anywhere. If you would like, I can drive it to you as long as you cover my time and expenses in doing so. I just purchased a car on Ebay, my wife and I flew to San Diego and drove it the nearly 3000 miles back. I know what it is like to have questions about a vehicle and have tried to answer all of the questions I would have asked. Feel free to contact me with any further questions and I will answer them ASAP. Thanks for your bids, and good luck…
