1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 #’s Matching PHS Docs Reasonable Rides and Rods presents this beautiful 1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400. Because 1972 was the strike year, this is a very rare car as only 5250 total Formulas were built. If you take into consideration that it is an automatic, it is only one of 4167 built that year. This car comes with a full numbers matching drivetrain and full PHS documents to back it up. This car was loaded with options (see original invoice), and is in great condition. The engine is the original YS coded 400 and was rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago. The previous owner indicated that a ram air III spec cam was used and the engine has a nice lope to it. The original numbers matching Quadrajet and distributor are still intact. The engine runs great and does not smoke or leak anything. We recently tuned the car with new points, wires, and plugs. Originally equipped with AC, the compressor and brackets are long gone. This ‘bird has power steering and power disc brakes. The transmission looks to have been rebuilt at some point, and it shifts perfectly. This Firebird has a new full length Flowmaster exhaust system with all new components from the manifolds back and it sounds great. The rear end is the original safe-t-trac (posi) unit with 3.42 gears. The exterior of the car was originally Lucerne Blue, but has been professionally repainted white. The paint is a base/clear job with no signs of the original blue paint and is only a few months old. The car has never left Texas, so the trunk and floors of this car are outstanding. The car has no rust issues. The glass is all in excellent condition. The interior is in great condition and would be considered mostly survivor quality. The front and rear seats have original covers that are very presentable. The dash is in excellent condition and the pad doesn’t have any cracks. The console is in good condition. The door panels are new and look great. The headliner has a couple of seams pulling loose, but is overall presentable. The carpet was replaced at some point and is in decent condition. The car rides on 17 inch Coy’s wheels. We do have the original Rally wheels, but they are not restored and have been painted white. This is a really great example of a rare Pontiac that has been well taken care of. While it hasn’t been fully restored, it has received a great deal of reconditioning. This car runs and drives fantastic. The suspension and steering is tight. The engine is very strong and the transmission shifts great. This car starts, drives and stops like it should. Everything works on the car other than the AC. You can drive it and enjoy it as it is, or finish it to a full restoration.
